Free space on the Nexus 7 (Per Phone Arena)

I was impresed with all the specs and almost purchased yesterday until I realized there was no Micro SD slot. I have filled 28gb of my 32gb Galaxy Tab (about half of that due to 25 video files), so for me 8 gb or 16gb is not enough. Is Google planning on offering lots of cheap cloud based storage or is this simply a limited device? Am I missing something here?

They really want Google Drive/Cloud to take off. I ordered the 16gb Nexus 7 yesterday and am really not worried about the lack of SD support. I'm using Google Drive on a daily basis and am open to eventually paying a little extra for more space (5gb is free). Doesn't Dropbox offer 5gb of free storage also? Note: I realize cloud storage doesn't work with apps at this time...

You can get 5Gb on google drive for free and I've got about 5 on drop box too. Add to that streaming services like netflix, temporary download rentals from google movies, access to online photo albums, etc and the need for local storage becomes questionable. As a wifi only device, this is designed (imo) for the home.

I have an Asus Transformer so I'm unlikely to pick up the Nexus 7, but I reckon you could get away with storing most of your content in the cloud. It's a mind set change, but it does have plenty of advantages.

People are assuming it is based on Anandtech stating it is supported in 4.1 that is in the N7. He did NOT say it worked for data, but the manual already states USB input devices work. You need more volts though to operate and power data drives, so he was going to check and get back with an update.

My guess is no, since why would they breach their cloud model? It costs more money and considering no SD slot, they are already trying to keep cost down so they could afford a good display and chipset.

Or, I could be wrong (could)- this is apparently a Google reply:

Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today.

Though the Nexus 7 doesn’t include an SD card slot, we offer a 16 GB version if you’re looking for additional storage. Yes you can use an external storage through the microUSB.

If there is anything further we can assist you with, please feel free to reply directly to this email or visit our help center at http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/request.p...

I do not agree it is all a mindset, but more an issue of practical ability to use it when you WANT to or NEED to. You are at the mercy of a wifi connection and also drain more battery opposed to local content.

I expect that like the Fire, there will be many of these on eBay or returned when some find it not too practical. Especially the 8gb, since some people seem to buy those assuming they can add a card.

Now, if there is full OTG support and not just for input devices, THAT will be different.

Why would you still have doubt if they clearly stated that you could use the microUSB for additional storage?
What else could they mean by that?

It is probably a outsourced help line, so how many times have such sources been right and wrong? ;)

We nee an actual test to validate, since "Jon" may have assumed that since USB input support, there is also storage support. Very big difference.

While I totally agree with you in some situations I think it wont be that bad. First I think a large portion of people who buy tablets (This size and price range) use them as email/web/eReader clients so Wifi needs to be solid and on all the time if not most of the time anyways. If they need it on the go (traveler) chances are they have a hotspot via phone or will opt for a 3g/4g device.

As far as content I may be off base here since this will be my first tablet but I don't see myself needing to get to my audio library offline much as I have my phone for that. Movies, yes I can see that being an issue where I will have to pre-plan what I want to watch on a trip... Games the same way. But to be honest at least in this area I don't know too many people that even buy or rent digital movies all that much do to price. And if they are savy enough to "barrow" them chances are they some sort of extra drive to begin with?

I guess I'm just seeing this device as a casual users toy at a low price point not a power users daily rig.

16Gb is plenty for temporary stuff while you travel about; loads of music, a few films and tv episodes, and books by the bucket load. Plan ahead, but really, you can pick up wifi all over the place now and some phone tariffs allow you to use your phone as a hot spot too.

In fact 8Gb will get you hours and hours and hours of entertainment while you're not connected. The worst thing will actually be ad funded games; they often don't work unless they can connect to download the ads.
