Does the N7 have a micro sd slot?

Yeppers. I like having my game roms, comics and videos local storage. All depends on your usage. You know that either Google operates in a bubble, or they know sales will be constrained due to lack of an sd card slot.

This makes sense to some degree, since if they are breaking even or even losing money selling these, WHY would they want local content users buying them? Of course, you would hope they would consider that even us local storage fans buy apps (I buy way too many- it is a condition I have- iTunes as well).

Nope, the Nexus 7 is cloud and proud and as stated, a big electronic fence to corrall users into using... MOOOOOO! ;)

Brian at Anandtech will update sometime this weekend (I hope), so maybe we will know if usb storage will work and not need a power source. Then we can hope Google does not kill the feature in an update (if works by accident) ;)

Hope I am joking.

But you don't NEED all that space is what I"m saying. I've got a 32 GB tablet. I've using about 18 GB of space. I've got over 1,000 comics, several GB of music and some books and games as well. The thing is I don't need all of that on my device. I don't need 8 hours + of music at my fingertips. It's a bit excessive. I also don't need over 1,000 comics. I could cut that number in half and be fine. I could easily cut the data I've got on there in half, get under 16 GB with no issues and be fine if I really wanted to. I carry that much data around just because I can, not because I need to.

I'm starting to honestly believe that Google intends to keep in this direction while letting other hardware manufactures compete in the big boy arena... Makes sense imho. If they keep going this way they will catch the eye of the normal consumer, get a few dollars from google play, AND keep other hardware manufactures in the game.

I guess I'm the perfect example.... I don't own any other tablets but for 200$ I can take the plunge. I never bothered with the Fire because I didn't want to be stuck with amazon. If I like it I might end up going higher end which means a transformer, Xoom, or something like that. At the same time I (or anyone who buys the 7) might help out the developers by buying a .99$ app here and there. This could work........

If need is a litmus, we do not need a tablet ;)

Honestly, I think this is Google's strategy exactly. They want something that is good enough, but isn't all things to all people. Honestly there was NO guarantee that ASUS would have been able to product the 370T for $250 anyways. It sounds like that was a bit of a rushed statement during CES or whatever show it was made at, and was intended to be a dual core tablet just prior to the announcement. My guess is that it would have either been released much later (perhaps around christmas, when the next gen "refined" Tegra 3 chipsets are out), or would have had a few features gimped, much like the Nexus7.

For one thing, why would ASUS want to cut off sales from it's transformer line? That's what you buy if you need all the bells and whistles. This is a bare bones but still usable tablet, that doesn't screw up the experience. Still a great screen, and good performance. That's all that matters 90% of the time you're using the thing...

I could probably live with 16 gb, but then you lose the $250 price point. No way I'm going to settle for 8. I'm waiting to see how the Acer A110 works out before I decide.

Google's business model is the cloud and streaming services they are partnered with for this device. The lack of external storage for most of the users (a small percent that buy will root) is by design. They want people that either intend or are forced into it after buying it. The others will either root and see if the device will support storage, or return the device. Google thinks they are wasting their money on local content folks- they do not want our business with the N7.

Google clearly made the Nexus 7 cloud and proud. Now, if ASUS would kindly release the non-gimped version for $50 extra, respectively :)

On a lighter note, maybe consumer pushback could be so great Google will update the N7 with full OTG support..... nah. Then again, maybe what is has is all it can have.

Counting the OS allocation, format parameters, stock apps and operational floor (OS needs about 500 mb flash free to operate correctly), nowhere near 8gb.

Example is the 8gb has about 5.9gb free, but another 500mb needs left alone, or "no" for most app updates or new app installs.

Added:

Then most people new to this OS discover that as they add apps, the media space is taken away. Cloud or not, this amount of space as app sizes and their data are growing is pure nuts- if you like games.

Exactly. Just a few large games would pretty much do it in. And that's one of the reasons why I want a tab to begin with. That and offline movies.

It occurs to me that this device is everything we used used to bitch about the iPad: No external storage, no removable battery, extra $$$ for extra memory, the "walled garden" effect

No sd slot is a deal breaker for me also. For a smartphone it's not so bad because they are always connected to the Internet. This makes cloud storage easily accessible. However, a lot of people aren't going to pay for 3g/4g service on a tablet and opt for a wifi version instead. When you have no Internet access on your tablet while you're traveling, local storage is essential.

I was sold as soon as I heard about the Nexus 7 having the Tegra 3! Owned and returned a Transformer Prime because of weak wifi and no gps. So I figured with Google behind it , and Asus's previous mistakes, this would be the Tablet to rule them all.
Then.................I saw it ! No SD card slot? Are you kidding me ? How much more would they have had to charge to add something that is standard in almost all electronics ? $20.00 tops ?
Well................still looking for the "ONE" tablet to rule them all 'cause this one ain't it !

But how much of that content do you actually touch on a regular basis?

In my case, honestly, loads. I'm a train driver, although it varies I often get loads of long breaks depending on circumstances. The ability to have a nice selection of high res tv shows and films, plus a tonne of comics, games and podcasts is brilliant. Phone signals vary greatly where I go, so local storage is a must.

Whether I need high capacity is debatable but my response to that is, why not have it? For less than

At least Apple offers higher sizes, but even that defeats the purpose of this device, since the functional model is driven by cloud channels for content. A 32gb and 64gb model would mean more content on the device and less streaming.

I still think google fully intended people who need higher end devices to get a full sized tablet like the prime... Comparing this to an iPad is a little unfair. On price point alone. Although I guess you could buy 3 of these to one 32 gig model from apple and put them together to get the same size screen too lol. I Think everyone keeps trying to fit themselves to the device and not the other way around. Which sounds like the apple way of thinking.

Come-on ... honestly. 6gb is enough as long as you have a desktop computer to store movies.... and with all the free cloud services. Face it the cloud is the future standard

That is what Google, Hollywood, EA, Valve, etc would like and you not have the content at all in your own local possession.

This is about control and forcing people eventually through portals. I spent years in the Marines defending people's freedom (as many others have too), not to have it slowly taken away, even with entertainment media now.

I am serious and usually joke, but not this time- Though do appreciate this will come across to some as melodramatic.

Added: Clouds AND the equal option of local content = Freedom of choice.

Not a fan of having a few people dictate to me their sense of standards for everyone. I respect others perspective and expect that reciprocated. General statement and not directed and forum folks.

Indeed! Choice is the right way to go! That's why I like seeing other hardware manufactures in the game for android. While some of us are willing to give some of that ownership security up for ease of use that doesn't mean everyone wants/should have to.

Remember the iPad does not have expandable memory and that sure has not hurt their sales.

That's only because most Ipad owners are Lemmings and want to be cool like their friends and would buy the iPad even if it self-destructed after 3 months !

There is "NO" excuse for the Nexus 7 ,not ot have an SD card slot...............period !

Have no issues with using googles cloud, but if I want to carry more data with me, "When I Don't Have Access To The Cloud" , would have nice to not have a "LIMITED/HADICAPPED" device !

Put the flag down. You'll poke someone's eye out.

This is all about design and cost. If Google added an SD card, it would add to the cost of the tablet and push it over the pricepoint they're aiming for. It's no more sinister than that. There's no conspiracy here.
