What about FOXFI

foxfi is supposed to give you a hotspot without having to root your phone: free with a minimum of fuss! At least, so I hear.

But I have a problem: when I activate the FOXFI hotspot I can find no link for it on my computer. Using Droid X and a Dell laptop.

Would love to have it as it's supposed to work. Any suggestions out there?

I've been using FoxFi for a while and have had no problems. I had ethical concerns in the beginning, but someone went through the TOS from Verizon and it says nothing about usage that would prevent using it. It's sort of like Google Navigation vs. VZ Navigator.

Anyway...

I have had my Thrive Tablet, my Laptop and my son's iPod all tethered to mine and haven't had any problems with any of them. I have a Droid Bionic BTW. I haven't set up any type of security, so I sorta ride bareback with the hotspot, but when we use it, it is typically in a controlled area (usually the car.)

Doesn't android already have the ability to wifi tether by default? What is the advantage of having an app do it rather than the system capability of android?

Not on Sprint, it's a service you have to pay extra for. And the nice thing about FoxFi is you don't have to be rooted in order to use it. All other tether apps I've seen required root.

Some phones don't support infrastructure AP mode which is what you need for full hotspot functionality. If FoxFi appears to work on the phone but you can't see the signal on another device you are trying to tether, it may be working in ad-hoc mode. Many devices won't show or connect to an ad-hoc network. You can determine if this is the case by using a wi-fi sniffer app such as WiFi Analyzer on another phone, it will show you if a signal is present and whether it's ad-hoc.
As an example, my old Optimus M had a built-in hotspot and tethering apps worked on it, but my Optimus M+ doesn't support it and the same apps don't work. I've checked with WiFi Analyzer and confirmed that it can only create an ad-hoc signal.
There may be a fix to enable infrastructure mode on those phones that don't do it natively, but I don't know about one.

i have a Bionic and have tested the Foxfi app and it worked great with my Acer 5745. But too my better half has a Droid X like you and i couldn't get it to work on her's either, on a laptop or her android Tablet. Must be something with the Droid X.....i suppose.
I can however use easytether on her acer laptop and a USB connection to connect to the internet. not wireless but it works for her in a pinch.

good luck with whatever you choose!!:)

Someone apparently did read carefully enough.

They specifically forbid connecting any other device to connect it to the internet using Verizon's network. So Verizon does forbid tethering outside Verizon tether plan. Whether you let what Verizon says you can do with the data you pay for is a different matter...

I have a laptop that I like to travel with and it would not recognize the foxfi hotspot and the same for an older desktop at home. The new ones worked right away.

The fix:
I went to the wifi card manufacturer's site and downloaded the latest driver package for both computers. BOTH now work better than ever. They not only recognize the foxfi which is named android57 or some such thing, they are now recognizing additional hot spots in the neighborhood that were never available before the updated drivers were added.

No guarantees but it sure worked for me! Best of luck.
