Personally, I wouldn't like having an iPhone and seeing everyone else with one. I had a iPhone 3g when it first came out (when it was still cool). Nowadays, everyone and their momma has one. Even middle school kids have one. Kinda reduces the impact of it all to me. Apple was the early bird that caught the worm but now it seems people are realizing they have other choices and switching over to android. The iTunes store had people entranced for a while too, but now Google play has stepped it up. So yeah, sorry if I'm off subject.

Am I the only one that gets a disgusting feeling every time I hear an iPhone SMS tone go off when out in public? Seriously its infuriating!

My Galaxy Nexus actually has that ringtone. The monophonic one from the Nokia 3310 (most voted to survive nuclear apocalypse). Its loud, its distinct, and gets people's attention especially since its a modern Android phone with a 12 year old ringtone.

You're probably right. It just seemed a little weird that they got a korean american judge to oversee this battle between apple and a korean company.

It just seems weird that they can ban smartphones like that. They all look very similar and do the same things.

It seems like GM would ban a car that looks similar to one of its vehicles.

There is a standard and Apple can't claim to own that design.

Lol I wouldn't like to use that, but however it would take the piss lol. Stuck on a piss full of people, the ringtone goes off and everyone looks around to see who has that old brick Nokia. Gets Galaxy Nexus out and bam, iSheep everywhere thinking its the iPhone 5..

Possibly, but not for a little while yet. Android will probably die with Google, which will still survive for at least another few decades. Besides, when its time does come, there will be better alternatives using the no doubt much, much better technology of the time, just like how Android today is much, much better than the now dead PDA OSes of yesterday. Linux will always exist, and I get the feeling there will always be an open-source, if not Linux-based, OS for phones.

the patent system is absurd. this stifles competition and makes innovation much harder to come by. small companies are hurt really badly by the patent system because they are scared to make any product where they can be sued by a bigger company.

I've always thought it was a bit of a double-standard by the US. I'm sure I've heard of cases where a company has lost a lawsuit because it would stifle competition, yet so far from what I've seen Apple's stifled competition plenty. I'm thinking the patent system will come around in time. Governments are often a bit slow with the law, and GUIs were only really invented 20 years or so ago.

I don't see that many people using Android around here, mostly BlackBerry and if you are 'rich' then you have an iPhone. Nice to see someone thinking differently close to where I live. I see your point but I think Google may still exist if it expands and innovates like its doing now. Its going to be really hard for a business to fail where it succeeds in so many areas. People will always use the web, so search engines will always be used. Nokia may have been to slow to react with the phone to smartphone changes and should have saw that developers were essential for their platform

I'm originally from Solihull and can scare a pan handler (begger) off at 5 paces with a Brummie accent - does that count?

Yeah, if there's one reason BlackBerry is not yet out of business it's because of Birmingham. I have no idea how it's so popular here when it seems like no one even mentions it on the Internet except to talk about poor old RIM's impending doom. I used to have a Curve 8520 from Virgin myself, hated it back then because it seemed so poorly built. The logo, of all things, fell off every time I got a replacement. Also, I was jealous of all those people with touchscreen phones. I think Android is most popular with programmers here - pretty much every programmer I know uses one, myself included. I also see quite a few businessmen (well, people wearing suits, at least) with them.

Anyway I think any company that isn't quick to adapt to our ever-advancing world could easily get caught off guard by the sudden arrival of a new technology. Google won't suffer Nokia's fate as long as it keeps on top of all Internet-related tech, which it so far seems to be doing quite well.

Yeah I think that too, Birmingham won't be enough to support BB and I think it might be from all the chav's you find in Birmingham. Those riots about a year ago were organized with BBM. Strange how you was jealous of touchscreens, I was jealous of people who had BBM, I knew it was a silly idea but some of my friends had it but I stood my ground and now see it no different than texting, who wants to pay for so called 'BB services' anyway?

Yeah Google seems to be always surprising me, Google Glass for a start.

Actually the patent system helps innovation by forcing companies to actually innovate and not simply copy the designs of others. It also allows even the smallest companies to protect themselves from encroachment.

Apple has paid many smaller companies for patents they used and abused. The protection works both ways.
