Nexus 7 or iPad?

Hey,

So I've been looking into the tablet market for a while, and before I had heard about the Nexus 7, I was adamant I was going to get the new iPad. However, the price and power the Nexus 7 sparked some interest.

I want a tablet for the following things for when am away from my dedicated computer;

Use of Adobe Touch applications and other graphic design applications
Word processing
Music
Occasional gaming
Occasional watching of films
Web browsing

They're my main needs for a tablet. I use a MacBook Pro, and am hoping to be getting an iMac in the next year or so for when I've graduated from university, so the iPad made sense... but the Nexus 7 is very tempting.

Would the Nexus 7 be of any use to me or not?

Thanks.

It would be of use. I have a 7 inch tablet and it works fine since my HP dm4 is handling the heavy stuff, and the tablet serves just as an ebook reader. So far for your purposes, if limited to that, the Google tablet is fine. There are more games for iPad though.

However, the one thing you might want to consider is your phone. If you have an iPhone, any paid app you have and want to have on Android, you will have to pay for again. My advice is if you have an iPhone, go iPad. If you have an Android, go Nexus.

The iPad though will offer more continuity with your Mac and of course has a bigger screen which will be better for the apps you use, it's a nice piece of kit.

The Nexus 7 will cater to people wanting an ebook with a bit of power behind it, will also sync well with your android phone as it has NFC. For me I'll be ordering the nexus 7 purely because I'm ready for a new ebook and it's only marginally more expensive but for you I would pick the ipad.

I have an Android phone; the HTC Incredible S, and I do like Android. But at the same time, I use Mac, and have an iPod so iTunes etc. is all set up. Do you know if the Adobe apps will run on a 7" tablet?

Yeah, the thing that I like about the Nexus is it's portability - more so than the iPad in terms of size - and the power under the hood, which seems to be slightly more so than the iPad, and I'd like to be future proof. Though I suppose, if I get the new iPad, next year when the latest model is out, I could always trade it in and pay a bit more for the new model, and keep doing that? I dunno.

I'd say go iPad definitely. The Nexus 7 doesn't look good at all. Small screen, plastic case, poor camera.

Since you have more Apple products, go Apple to help with the connectivity.

(I love Android and Apple the same)

Yeah, I love both Android and Apple, hence me being a bit stuck. Though what you've said makes me lean more to the iPad. Just want to make sure I purchase the correct device.

To be honest I don't know why a "poor camera" would affect the tablet any way? The last thing I would want to do is take pictures with a tablet when my phone or DSLR do the exact same thing better.

Yupe. I saw people holding up a 10 inch tablet to take photo. It really makes them look like idiots.

For a tablet, the camera that matters is the front facing camera for video conferencing. The only real application for the back camera is for augmented reality.

So you always carry your DSLR with you? Why not have an extra camera? On the Prime, it works great for 1080p video and such.

I know I have a prejudice against Apple too - to where I hate them with my inner soul but I will attempt to be objective. Since you say you have an android phone it seems that the nexus 7 will be a good choice. Reason being is that you will retain apps between the tablet and your phone. If this is of no bother and you want to pursue different apps/games on different system than the clear choice is the Ipad.

The screen is really good so you would be able to do a lot more - got a rear camera - I dont know why you need it but what ever I guess. More apps and easier integration with your computer.

I personally would go with the Nexus 7 and save some green in my pocket as the tablet can perform everything you want and yet it is half as expensive and who does not like some extra green in their pocket!!!

alright I will be playing devils advocate here and the community will hate me for it. But the ipad (ipad 2 to be precise) is the most superior tab I have ever used. Its very smooth, very quick in loading apps, movies and games, and is very stable and does everything great. Its web browsing is amazingly smooth and the keyboard and touch experience is the best out of all the tablets I have used. I can get everything done on it. Its just great for everything, word processing, gaming, browsing, watching movies, you name it. I do however suggest a jailbreak so you can maximize the raw power of it.

Reasons why I recommend this over the new ipad? Its very budget price now, and still has the smoothest performance out of all the tablets (the extremely high retina resolution on the new ipad really takes a toll on the CPU, it heats often, games lag a bit more, and the wifi and battery have some slight issues)

This is coming from a guy who has used both platforms extensively:

1) Based on what you're needs are, the iPad is the way to go. Pages is better than anything on Android for word processing, and if you use the desktop version on your Mac, come Mountain Lion, you'll be able to sync your documents in the (i)Cloud.

2) Trust me. You DON'T want to do graphic design on an iOS or Android tablet. I've used the Touch apps, it's nowhere near standard PS. That said, if you are firm in your decision to do so, the iPad will be better for two reasons: 1) the screen size and ppi, and 2) more applications outside of Touch.

Don't get me wrong, both are fantastic (in fact I have the new iPad and I already pre-ordered the N7), but Android tablets really are struggling right now due to application selection.
