MicroSD Suggestions?

I've been doing some research and found out from multiple sources that a class 10 is pointless on cell phones and will actually be slower at reading and writing. It is said that a class for and a class 6 are what you should be getting for a cell phone.

These class 10's and uhs-1's are for high end cameras that take very large sized/quality pics. But seeing that the s3 is 8mp and a song file will be no more than 5-6mb's, a class 10 isn't needed and that a class 10 is actually slower at reading smaller file sizes. It is meant to read large files like that of a high end camera. Where as a class 4 or 6 is slower at reading large file size, but faster at reading small file sizes. Since the micro sd will be used most likely for pictures/videos and song files, a class 10 really isnt worth spending double of what you would for a class 4.

The only benefit of a class 10 is if you are using it just for movies. But why would you store movies long term on there? If I was going on a trip and wanted to watch a movie, I would put it on my internal memory, watch it and then delete it when I get back from my trip.

so for me, anything beyond class 6 for a cell phone is pointless. Yes a class 10 is far superior to a class 6, but that is in regard to what they micro sd's are originally made for: Cameras.

What??

So I've been researching MicroSDs ALL day!! I visited this thread a few days ago and decided that I want a 32GB UHS-I so that won't have to worry about quality or storage space when I get my Samsung Galaxy S3. I shop on Amazon and viewed everything from Transcend to AmazonBasics. I'm really leaning towards Sandisk (after reading reviews) but I'm a college student, so before hand over before I hand over my $30+ I want to make sure that I'm making the best decision.

One of my main questions is HC vs XC and will both be recognized by the phone? Secondly, with SanDisk does the SD have to say "Mobile Ultra" or will the Ultra suffice? I saw at least one post on here and in other threads that certain SDs are not being recognized.

Kind of bummed that an SD is not included (as much as the phone costs) because my HTC Inspire was my 1st Android and it comes with one. If there's anything else I should consider, please let me know. Thanks.

I went with this one. SanDisk, 64 GB, class 10:
Amazon.com: SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 30MB/s Memory Card with SD Adapter (NEW VERSION) - Retail Packaging with SDXC USB Reader: Computers & Accessories

Go big or go home. Yeah, it'll be half price in a few weeks. Yeah, I don't probably need a "Class 10" card. But I figured buy the best that's available now and forget about it for 2 years. Always worked for me. :)

Now I see the same card for $28 less above. I ain't even mad. :p My phone shipped this morning, my card will be here tomorrow, and my Infuse car dock should be here Friday. Life is good. :)

eek, you could get a 32 GB Class 10 for <$25 shipped. Do you really need 64GB right out of the gate?

Define need? I don't "need" an S3 either, but my OG Incredible has been on its last legs for months and the S3 is the phone I've been waiting for.

It all goes back to when I was a kid. I bought what I thought was a really cool Casio Databank watch. It was cool for a 10 year old, but I was mega pissed the next day when I saw my friend had the same watch WITH a calculator. I wasn't mad because he had a better watch, I was mad because I didn't do my research and bought an inferior product.

Ever since then I've researched the heck out of every purchase and always bought the best I could afford. Haven't regretted it yet. :)

Talking 2 different things here......

32 GB vs 64 GB

You can get *quality* class 10 cards in either capacity.

It is like going to Costco and ordering a case of ketchup instead of single one at the supermarket. If you need the capacity great, but buying more than you need is not a *great* buy either, particularly since the cost of memory generally decreases and capacity increases over time.

Not exactly... To stretch the metaphor a little farther, if the ketchup never went bad, neither storing it nor the up front cost imposed a hardship on you, and you'd eventually use it, why not buy the case?

Frankly, the extra cost doesn't mean much to me. I'd rather spend it now than even think about it later.

If, if, if......

I would buy the world if I could, but I prefer to budget appropriately based on my immediate and foreseen need :) YMMV

Hey, no worries. Different strokes for different folks. I have bigger things to worry about than the stupid memory card in my phone, so now I feel I'm set until the the next great phone that's worth paying full retail for comes out. That feeling alone is worth the extra $75 to me.

If you're going on long trips or doing presentations, or have a crap-ton of high quality music, than I totally understand this. I just recently purchased a 240GB SSD. It was after some substantial price drops, and it's a very high end model with Toggle NAND (best of the best). I got it very close to $1 per gigabyte on a great sale with no mail in rebates. If I would have waited merely a month, I could've bought the same drive on a later sale that brought the cost remarkably below the $1 per gigabyte mark. Now we're shooting for $.75/GB on high end and $.50 on mid to low end SSDs.

Yes, I could've saved money if I'd waited, but I do a substantial amount of high definition video editing and photo editing on my system, and my 80GB Intel SSD was starting to feel really cramped. In addition, I've had a new SATA 6Gb/s compatible motherboard now for sometime, but no SSD capable of taking advantage of that bandwidth.

Now I do. I could've waited, but I've gotten good use out of it, it's a good drive, and it served me when I needed it. I could fill 64GB out of the gate easily with TV shows, music, videos, graphics, presentations for work, etc... all things I use my phone for almost DAILY!! I take long trips every month to drill on the other side of the state. I sometimes have long wait periods with only my smartphone for company. I also need to do a presentation now and again with the handy HDMI output MHL adapter. That stuff gobbles up space like crazy.

With modern dual core phones with strong GPU and multimedia capabilities, an awful lot of laptop-ish functions are making their way to our smartphones, which means we need more space.

If 32GB is enough for you, boy oh boy are there some great deals on fast Class 10 cards with less than $1/GB costs. But I don't begrudge a guy getting a 64GB right away. $75 is still a well-below price average for such a card. I am sad that I missed out on the $51 class 6 64GB MicroSD card a couple weeks ago (yes, it's true ... it was a legit deal!) I am probably going to limp along on a spar 16GB card until I see another sale like that because I'm broke as a spoke. But if you can afford it and you're going to use it, than I totally understand paying reasonable market value for your needed goods! :D

No one responded to my post, so again I ask does the card need to say "Mobile Ultra" or will the MicroSD without the "Mobile" be recognized? (Sandisk) This is the 1st SD card I'll have to purchase for a phone, so obviously I'm unsure. Plz help.

Yes, you can use cards without "mobile". I don't even think they were in existence before the smartphone (I hate that name!) gained in popularity. Some say they may even be slower cards and have compatibility issues with some readers.

Ordred this exact one.. That should work fine right?

Thats the one I bought for my S2, moved it right over to the S3 with no problems

So I finally put my SanDisk 32GB UHS-1 class 10 in. It mounted & recognized the card instantly. My question is just what is the actual capacity? I clicked on Storage and it said 29.75GB Total Space available AND for everything else! Card is brand new but I formatted it & still the same numbers . Is this normal or has anyone had a similar experience?

So the SG3 would in theory support 98 gb of storage memory???

2 GB RAM
32 GB Internal Storage (max)
64 GB Removable Storage (max)

TECHNICALLY, the SGSIII could support 128 GB of storage :p international version has a 64 GB model + 64 GB card... again technically, the ram is memory, not storage, so it doesn't count ;)

FWIW, I stuck in a 32 GB, class 4 Sandisk card I had laying around as a spare and it's been more than adequate. If I were buying new, I'd get a 64 GB, class 6 card, prolly another Sandisk, but I don't know that I'd bother with a class 10 (or higher). Been playing HD video, music, viewing pix, etc from the external card, also taking pix/movies from the camera, etc, all with zero problems, though I'm hardly a photo buff (and if I were, I'd likely not be using my phone for serious photography).

From the PCMag article linked above:
Generally, if you want to shoot HD video or if you plan on taking a lot of high-resolution photos in quick succession (or use a digital SLR's RAW image file format), buy a Class 10 card. If you're planning to just take snapshots or occasionally show videos, Class 4 or Class 6 will do.
So yeah, I really doubt the casual user needs a class 10 card. YMMV and all that.

As for storage capacity, I have two 2 TB HDDs full of media at home, but for carrying around in my pocket, 32 GB seems to be fine (plus the built in 16 GB, though I have no current plans on storing any media onto the phone itself). Again, 64 GB might've been my natural preference, but really, how many HD movies are you going to be watching on your phone at a time?
