If I purchased a G2X to replace my Nexus One will I have to additionally pay for Hotspot/Tethering? I was checking out the G2X on Amazon and under services it lists Tethering and Hotspot at $15 and $10 respectively. Does this apply to Android phones using 2.2 and higher (both features built in and I was never charged for Hotspot mode on my Nexus One) or that just showing since other devices might require a fee?

That was one of the first questions I asked yesterday during my preview and today when I got it. My rep says that "It'll work the same way it did/does on the HTC devices, meaning that it's a feature that you can enable, and it'll work to a point then unless you have the $14.00 add on, you'll get throttled like a red headed stepchild." (His words not mine)

As I'm tinkering around with it now, the option is definitely there and I'll test it if I get time tonight.

So far it doesn't seem like the Hotspot mode requires the specific plan. I tested it out on my phone. The only message I got before enabling Hotspot mode was that the feature required the service on my account, afterwhich it enabled anyway (no message for any agreement for additional service) and I used it just fine.

Now we just need to wait and see what your next bill looks like. ;)

Since it is a carrier-specific phone, even with a mostly-vanilla Android build on it, I wouldn't be too surprised if the tethering app had been modified to notify T-Mobile that you were using it.

Thankfully I didn't do too much on it. Just connected the N1 to see if it would work and then turn it back off. If push comes to shove I'll enable it only when I'm travelling as I used my N1's 3G quite a lot while on the road for my Ipod but I was never charged anything extra by T-Mobile for it.

NEVER! Tmo tried to block/redirect traffic when detecting using Chrome on desktop. But then it is still working fine on IE. There is also a chrome add-on to change the UA string to Firefox or other browser.

Good advise, i will have to try that. I tether just fine but when i start to watch a few videos on my laptop it redirects me to a tmobile site telling me i might be tethering.. well duhh.. lol so what i am getting is that it detects the full chrome browser that im using? should be fine with ie or firefox?!
