After the ICS update of my Galaxy SII, autorotation has stopped working. I have tried enabling/disabling the autorotate function and phone restart. Nothing works. Came across a suggestion to do horizontal calibration. But, curiously, whenever I try to do the horizontal calibration the phone restarts. Driving me crazy. Please help!

Do you have a number of apps installed that feature calibration of these features you're having trouble with?

My suggestion is to try uninstall the ones that are running as a background process and use the built-in calibrator. You can reinstall back the apps if you are successful in fixing the issue.

Some good news at last! After the failed factory reset, I checked the hardware with 'bubble' and 'phone tester' apps. Both failed to work. So I finally gave up, thinking that it is a hardware issue. I had decided to visit a Samsung service centre the next morning.

In the morning, I switched off the mobile and removed my SIM before taking it to the service centre. All of a sudden, autorotate started working again! :) Although it is not working in the pull-down screen and list view of apps, it is working in all the other areas like contacts, gallery and book readers.

I am not sure what caused the problem. I hope it does not recur again!

I hope others with similar problem find this thread useful!

Tried that random solution you gave and it started working! I was about take my phone to the service center preparing for the worst (factory data reset/hardware problem) then came across your post!!!

Absolutely worked fine after following the steps like power off the phone, removed battery, sim, SD card etc.,.

Had the same symptoms like Bradex (auto rotation and the calibration issue), and I tried with ONLY switching off the phone and then switching it on again. It worked that way, as well.

With the option "restart" it didn't work.

Thanks a lot guys, you made my day wonderfull :),

my galaxy s2 (G) too had the same symptoms and i had tried restarting the phone earlier but that didn't work. after reading your suggestion I tried switching off the phone and then switching on. Viola! it worked.

I'm relieved that I need not go to service center :)
