Is it possible to tether without Verizon knowing we are doing it? If so how?

tells you how to if you need to, at the moment looks like you can share your data plan via tethering as a modem/usb but nothing is available to enable the wifi hotspot without rooting your device and this link covers that too.

That's good to know, I only tether if I have to pull over on the side of the road and do remote takeover of customer devices. having a reliable 4G connection will make this easier.

?? I wasn't aware of a 5 GB cap. I guess an unlimited data plan is only unlimited to a point?

There is no cap. There are people who use 20+GB (not me). However, I bet there is a data usage level that flags your account for further scrutiny.

This is correct. i use 8gb on average per month without tethering. i love downloading apps games ect. when i do use tethering i use 45gb +

FoxFi works just fine without rooting.

I am thinking of picking up a S3 when they come out for Verizon. I am waiting to find out two things:

1. Is the reception stron like the Charge, and not pathetic like my Nexus?

2. Will FoxFi work seamlessly with the phone without rooting?

My comment was that FoxFi in general works on most android phones without root.

From foxfi's website:

"*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update"

So I guess the short answer is at this very moment, no, but it shouldn't be long before it does.

I'm rooted and can't seem to get any traditional tether apps to work yet. There's something in the ROM that is preventing them, pretty clever on Verizon's part. Of course this will just force me to flash a custom ROM that includes a tether when they come out!

ah, figured it out. It's a device setting inside the tether apps. Good to go now. If anyone is interested check here. Read the 2nd post after downloading the app.

Grossie - when did you get your VZW S3? I've never rooted a phone, so can you direct me to the a good beginner's guide? I don't want to screw something up!

Actually, it's working 100 percent perfectly on my Verizon S3. Used it for half an hour or so yesterday...

If you've never rooted a phone, I recommend waiting a bit for a 1 click rooter. It will make your life a lot simpler, and remove virtually all worries. This is the place you will want to watch, and I'm sure someone will be putting up a very comprehensive rooting guide soon.

Got mine on Friday.

Check out the xda-developers forum for a root guide. This root was pretty easy to get, but not quite 1-click which will be available soon enough. To accomplish this one I'd suggest reading a lot. Also, check out the video that someone posted over there, it'll be pretty helpful even for the newbie rooter. Getting clockword mod on the device requires the use of adb, which is a little more complex and not really needed unless you want to flash a custom ROM.

Have my S3 from VZW but FoxFi doesn't work. Neither does a hard tether via PdaNet. And there's no Android tether option that I can find. Is root my only option?

Does FoxFI have different phone profiles to use? Ie., galaxy nexus cdma/lte. If so try that.

Foxfi working fine for me right now unrooted (I am using it now to type this on my laptop). As a result I will probably wait until a more simpler/stable root comes out before going with what's out now.

"1 Click Tether" (from DIY Phone Gadgets) seems to be working fine on my S3. Root is NOT required for this app.
