Help Turn Phone Off - Keep GPS On?

I want to be able to use my phone while hiking as a GPS, using Google Maps new ability to download maps for offline use. I don't want the device looking for phone service while out of range, eating up battery.

However, I can't find a way to turn the phone radio off and still be able to use the GPS. The only way I see to turn the phone radio off in ICS is to put it into airplane mode - but this seems to disable the GPS receive as well.

Anyone know how to turn the phone radio off and leave the GPS receive on?

Thanks!

I use Widgetsoid, and I can have my phone in airplane mode, and have the GPS on...

I tried several things last night and never could get the GPS to work without a data connection. I loaded Widgetsoid and when I went into airplane mode, none of my GPS status programs (GPS Status, Ulysse Gizmos, etc.) would see any satellites.

What am I doing wrong? What program above is being used to see the satellites when in airplane mode?

Thanks...

OK, GPS Test seems to have been the key. If I put the phone in airplane mode, no application that I had would access the GPS. Now, if I put it in airplane mode, then start GPS test, it seems to fire up the GPS and other applications can use it as well.

Weird, but seems to work. Thanks for the help!
