Root Anyone KEEPING their Triumph?

Wife and I were planning on keeping our Triumphs for a while but the convergence of two things changed that: my growing frustration with it--it's completely choking on Firefox being the most recent addition--and wife's co-worker wanting to switch to VM and interested in buying both of our Triumphs. It was an irresistible Dirk Gently moment.

First, let me preface what I'm about to say with we don't regret our Triumph purchase; it was our first Android phone and a good learning experience and even with owning them for only 4 months, we still saved money over our old Sprint service.

Having picked up the Evo V, I will say that these phones are totally worth it to us. Even without 4G in my area, the Evo's throughput is far greater than the Triumph's (5-6 bars vs. 0-1 bar--6 bars? It is one louder!). The Evo V is smooth and responds instantly with zero hitching or waiting. If that is important to you, it's worth it; if you are more patient, then maybe it isn't.

Once again, I was asking who is KEEPING their Triumph, not discuss the EVO V and all it's great features. :)

With all the posts on this board about users and devs leaving the community, it's made me kinda depressed to think I might be the only one left with a Triumph. With a small income and a two year old, buying the Evo V, as much as I would love to, is just not a possibility right now. So I was wondering who is actually staying with the Triumph and possibly going to continue working on ROMs. I'd love to learn to dev myself but don't even know where to begin.

I am keeping, the phone is not broken, and many good ROMs to choose from. All the CM7 ones are pretty good already. Well, I am waiting for the CM9 roms to have camera support, but CM7 is working fine as it is.

The plan is cheap. But one problem for me is the coverage, a little bit spotty around my work, good reception at home though I don't really need that. My next switch would be to the T-mobile Monthly 4G prepaid plan, but waiting for a better phone...

At first, I was excited to get the Evo and was planning on buying it first thing, but now I think I will hold off for a while. The Triumph is a great phone with CM7 installed and the only reason I was wanting the Evo was the ICS.. but the 3D camera isn't an interest to me.

I am certain there will be even better phones out by the end of the year and definitely by next summer. I'm gonna wait for those. Because an extra 10 dollars a month for the Evo isn't worth it to me personally now that I really think about it. And if ICS camera is fixed then the Triumph really will be an awesome phone to use until then.

I just picked up my new MT four months ago for $199 on QVC. This is my first Android smart phone. Previously, I was with AT&T and had only a 500 minute talk plan and 1000 text messages for $49 per month. That old phone was a POS Samsung Eternity with proprietary OS and I had it for two years. I only talk on the phone an average of 150 to 250 minutes per month.

Getting the MT compared to the Eternity is like having 20/20 vision after being legally blind. WOOT! It has been a no brainer for me. Save $14 a month and have unlimited texting, internet, and WiFi. My plan was to use the MT for two years then see what is available then. After two years I will have saved $336 versus inferior phone and service from AT&T. :D I am very thrilled to have an Android phone like the MT. All those with old iPhones and expensive plans can't touch me.

I tried the Evo but it's annoying having to turn 4G on/off to save battery...and I don't REALLY need 4G. phone's are really too small to watch Netflix on and I have a 7" tablet for that. Also the Stock & Deodexed Sharp ROM has really breathed new life. It's what this phone should have been. GPS works, seems to connect to internet faster, and doesn't hang on calls when using Google Voice. Random apps don't crash and everything seems just a bit more responsive than CM7 or MIUI. Also, since I'm grandfathered at $25, it's hard to give up (I reason the $5 I save over going to Tmobile goes towards Netflix). 3G has been consistent for me in NYC and don't have a problem making calls over GV.

Being 17, it's hard to have any money at all (The jobs around here are horrid). So, since I bought my Triumph 31 days before they announced the new VM HTC phone, I'm stuck with it. I'm just sad to see (all? Gannon?) the ICS devs leave. I love ICS on my Triumph.

Um.. A job is a job and money is money, especially when you're 17 and you're limited to menial minimum wage work. What, afraid you might have to step outside and do something or *gasp* interact with other people? Suck it up and apply for something, things aren't getting any better.

As for me, I'm sticking with the Triumph until the next Nexus comes out in a couple months. Otherwise I'd be all over the Galaxy Nexus, because I'm sick of the T's lack of dev support as well as VM support.

Lack of dev support really? Are you serious? Yes we lost a lot of quality dev's but I would like to see any other phone from Virgin Mobile that offers this many working ROM's. Let's face it you bought the MT because it was cheap and the plan was cheap. That's why you are not on AT&T or Verizon using your Nexus.

So before you start take shots at lack of dev support don't forget it's us dev's that spend our free time to make rom's for people like you that don't appreciate it. Maybe next time before you bite the hand of the people that feed you, you might think before you type your rage. Insensitive much? Jobs are hard to come by, and you don't know his/her circumstances. Saying "suck it up" isn't going to boost anyone's confidence. This is a phone thread, not a bash thread.

I paid $300 for the phone (as opposed to $99 for an iPhone 4 for example), so no, I wasn't motivated by price alone. Honestly, before you take shots at me, try to get the whole story first. The MT was my first personal experience with Android, and prior to that I'd heard of all the potential that Android phones have and WOW you can customize it any way you want with ROMs.

That was before I realized how things really work, and before I learned of the constant struggle between devs and carriers to piece together a fully working ROM for each version. And then there's the popularity game that is dev support. I thought, "Hey, the Triumph looks like a decent phone, devs will flock to it!". So I bit the bullet and didn't realize how wrong I was until it was a few months too late and that any serious dev work with the Triumph was a no-go.

Yeah, and I know you dev, but sorry, you're just not doing what I was hoping for. And I know that's not necessarily your fault. I'm well aware that Motorola's not playing nice with the devs. If you're offended by my saying that the Triumph lacks dev support, you can't deny that support is positively anemic in comparison to a other phones. It's not nonexistent, but there's not much really going on. I'm not sure why you think I'm being ungrateful. I'm acknowledging that the situation is just kind of.. Not what I was expecting. And that's my fault for not doing enough research and letting myself get caught up in the hype.

So I'm resolving to suck it up, cut my losses, and move on when I have the chance. And money's not going to be an issue, I'm going to buy an unlocked Nexus phone when the next one is released, and that'll more than likely run me close to $500. But it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind that my phone's not going to become obsolete 3 months in. And unlike the Triumph, I'm 100% sure I won't be regretting my purchase less than a year down the line. People are still buying the last Nexus device, in fact, for these very same reasons.

Hey,hey..lets all be nice to each other. yes it was very unfortunate we lost many devs, but that doesn't mean we have a lack of devs still. these guys work hard trying to get roms on such device. if you're not satisfy why don't you try becoming a dev a make your rom? u paid the price for your phone for a reason. if u were expecting more why buy this phone? u should check the forums for the phone before you buy, getting a sense of wat u can expect. i got my MT for 200 knowing i can have cm9 satisfied me. yes like u and many others,i will be getting the next nexus phone when it comes out,but until then,be happy with what you got :)

Already taking responsibility for my mistake -- and believe me, it was a mistake to buy into the Triumph -- The next Nexus won't be. Simple as that. :)

I had my triumph for a couple years before I got a good deal on the HTC One S on Tmobile, but when I had it I loved it, and now it is still kicking. I gave it to my friend, and he will most likely upgrade soon, and pass it down once again. the nice thing about virgin mobiles phones is since they arent necessarily "high end" (except the 3d now) they are very durable. I had the intercept, optimus, and triumph, and I never cracked a single screen, and neither has any of my friends I passed them down to. It seems that the industry has traded durability for looks, and I can say that I am a lot more afraid to drop my One S than I was to drop my triumph (which I did on several occasions, just minor exterior blemished). The triumph was built to take a beating, whenever I dropped it the battery case would shoot off and the battery would fly out, and if you think about it, that is just more force not going into the screen. The corners are plastic, so they flex, and sometimes the case would separate, all taking force away from the fall and keeping the internals safe. (plus the case just needed to be pushed back together)
I am ecstatic to be leaving virgin mobile, but I will miss the phones and most definetly the devs.

the triumph had amazing dev support, and im sad to see so many of them leave now, but when I had the intercept this is what happened too, they all moved on to the Optimus V. A few stragglers stayed behind, helping people out and maybe putting out an update or two, but the excitement always stays with the new phone, and especially on virgin mobile because the Triumph and Evo are really the first phones that can actually be used for a long period of time.
Farewell Triumph community, I will miss you! thanks for making my virgin mobile ride as smooth as possible

All the phones you listed have plastic screens. Literally the only way you could crack them is if you brought a knife or another equally sharp object directly to them with some force. You're more likely to just run through the screen, actually.

I started with the Optimus V, then after a few weeks jumped ship and got a Triumph, and while I no longer have it, I have had quite a few other phones that I can compare it to, since my girlfriend still has and uses the Triumph every day. Here goes:

1. Initially, when I got the Triumph, I was thrilled with how sexy the device was without a case or anything. Just carrying it made me smile :) It was certainly a huge step up from the Optimus in everything other than community (although the Triumph certainly does have a good community, it's not anywhere near as large as the Optimus V's).

2. After a few months with my Triumph, I got a Samsung Captivate Glide. The full keboard was nice, but the buttons were tough to press and I had become so accustomed to swype that I just couldn't use it for typing. Plus the keyboard made the phone much wider than my Triumph, and there was literally no community, so no roms :( The specs did blow the Triumph out of the water, but it didn't feel faster in any way.

3. I traded the Glide for a Droid Razr. This phone was a big step up from the Glide. I was shocked at how thin it was every time I picked it up. And boy was it fast. I liked how indestructible it was without any sort of case or screen protector, but I didn't like how the bootloader was locked and the radio liked to randomly drop wifi while I was using it (a known problem in GB on this phone). The phone felt creaky and the bezel around the screen was just too big, so while it was thin, it was tough to hold and operate. While a big step up from the Glide, it wasn't a huge step up from the Triumph. A little less lag, but probably not worth the cost of switching.

4. I eventually sold the Razr and got a Galaxy Nexus. Wow. Just wow. Samsung did a FANTASTIC job. That screen was incredible. It put the retina display on the iphone to SHAME. After rooting and rom'ing, I decided to give LMT launcher a go, which allowed me to run the phone without the onscreen controls on bottom. This meant I had the full 4.65" screen to play with, and it was really incredible. If you're going to buy any phone on the market, get the Galaxy Nexus. You won't be disappointed. This was the first phone I used that was a major step up from the Triumph. Every rom is bug-free and just perfect. Only downside is less-than-stellar battery life, but after putting a custom rom on, it would usually end the day with about 30%.

5. I've recently swapped my Galaxy Nexus for a Galaxy Note. I was curious how good it was and figured if I didn't like it, I could sell it and buy a brand new Nexus straight from Google. But when I got that package in the mail, I fell in love almost instantly. This is the end of evolution for smartphones. I really don't think it could be any better. Buggy roms aside, this is miles ahead of any other phone on the market, bar none. Galaxy S3? HTC One X? Not even close. Massive screen that turns heads and has people you've never met coming up to you at malls and asking about your phone and a battery that lasts for days, this is what it's all about. Overall, until the Roms get a little less buggy, I would still recommend getting a Galaxy Nexus, and the screen will be too big for some, but this phone makes you feel like a rock star every time you pull it out: people stop and stare in awe. It will be a cold day in hell before I get rid of my note, but it wasn't cheap. Still, until you own one, you will think it too big. Give it a week, I've never heard of anyone not liking the gigantic screen whose given it a fair go.

6. I've flipped a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, so I have a little experience with that. This one's tough to recommend over a Triumph, and the main reason is TouchWiz. TouchWiz sucks. The phone really requires you to root and install a custom rom, and from what I've found, none are really as complete as the Triumph roms. It's also tough being priced similarly to the Galaxy Nexus. It really can't compete with that in any way.

Summary: So overall, if you're happy with your Triumph, STICK WITH IT! It's still the best phone on Virgin Mobile for the money. I haven't tried one of the new Evos, but HTC is usually pretty bitchy about blocking rooting/custom roms (s-off? not fun). I really do think the Triumph is THE best phone with 512mb ram and a single core processor, not even close. There are phones it bests with double the specs, and I think that's very impressive.

If you do want to jump ship, I'd say either take your chances with the VM Evo, or get Straight Talk/T-Mobile's $30 plan and get yourself a Galaxy Nexus. It's a little more money, but it really is worth more than it costs. Before google started selling them, they sold USED for $450. Now they're down to about $350, and I think that's a steal.

Well I'm locked in on the $25 plan. I would buy the HTC Evo V, but then my plan would hike up to $35 which I'm not interested in. I am disappointed by Virgin Mobile's lack of support for their Android devices and also their coverage is a little shoddy around certain parts of my area. So I will probably stay on the Triumph for another year or so (or until I get kicked off the $25 a month plan). Then I'm going to switch carriers. Probably looking at the $30 monthly4g plan from TMobile with a high end phone.

I'm really happy there is at least a good dev community, but it's sad to see people go. I know everybody talks about it, but having the camera working on ICS would be awesome. At this rate I'm not sure it will ever get done unless VM officially updates (not going to happen lol) or maybe if Motorola releases the source code or something. CM7 is still a major improvement over the stock firmware, and Holo Launcher lets me pretend I have ICS so it's not so bad for the time being.

I'm in exactly the same boat, I think the Evo V looks awesome. However I don't get WiMax coverage here and spending $300 for the Evo V, and losing my $25/month plan doesn't sound appealing. As long as they keep letting me keep the $25 plan I'll stay on it.

That is unless Republic Wireless gets their act together and becomes more appealing.

I'm in for the long haul too- had the Rumor Touch, then upgraded to the OV & then to the Triumph, all in the span of about a year. There's no way my better half would let me spring for another phone anytime soon! :)

There are certainly better phones out there, but the MT does what I need it to do and the custom ROMs fix almost all the issues, save for the mediocre reception. I'm hoping that someday we'll have a CM7 or CM9 ROM with working HDMI & camera, but even stock, the MT is a decent phone rooted & with the bloat removed. Of course, if it breaks, all bets are off! ;)
