Back to the DX again...

Well, after 4 days with the Galaxy S3, it went back to the store. Too many issues. Next phone to hope for is the Fighter.
S3 issues
1) Weak signals, dropped calls, dropped data connection in locations where I have "never" lost calls on my DX. My wife's Maxx gets 2-3 bars of 4G at the exact same time the S3 has no connection at all.
2) The screen, although sharp and beautiful, but too dim. When in the car dock on google maps, it's too dim to see.
3) You cannot use BT phone and have a headphone jack attached at the same time for calls. I use my headphone jack to pump music and movies into my car stereo, but when a call comes in, it will not play over the radio. You have to unplug the headphone jack before the BT will accept the call. Major fail.
4) Other annoyances like the "connect to wifi" notification always there in the notification bar without the ability to remove it. And also pop up windows saying "Known WiFi network detected. Connect?" Even though the WiFi is off. Don't really know what that is about, but don't care for it popping up.

Time to get smart on the upcoming Droid Fighter or HD what ever it will be called.

I too am waiting for the Maxx HD. Rumor has that it won't be released until sometime in August, because this will put it past the 14 day return window for the early purchasers of the SG3.

But if this is true, I'm feeling we should soon start getting some leaked info, (whether official or unofficial) regarding the Maxx HD.

Patiently/impatiently waiting for the info on the Maxx HD, :smokingsomb:

If the specks are the same as the S3, it should be good to go for me. I'm not sure if it will sport the same 2GB of ram though.
My biggest fear will be the power outlet on the top like my wife's maxx. I really hate that! I'd still buy it, but be irritated all the time.

Hey, at least it isn't on the side, I've always hated that.

Is there really a "good" spot for the power port.

I've had phones with them on either side high and low, on the top and on the bottom. Really, they're all very inconvenient at some point or another.

I'm guessing it'll be on the side. The reason I think this is so that the phone can be easily plugged into the phones desk dock and car dock. If the plugin is on the top or bottom, it's near impossible to plug it into docks when in the horizontal position.

Just an educated guess on my part however, :smokingsomb:

Well, thanks God! As I type this, my literally 15-20 SBF has worked, it's restarting!

1) Fortunately I've had better signal with my S3 than my DX. In fact, I get good solid 3g on fringe areas where my DX always dropped to 1x. However, I know there are those S3s that truly suck as evidenced by those that exchanged theirs for a replacement S3 and suddenly got very good signal.

2) There's an almost hidden setting for color profile that for some reason is set to #3 which is the dimmest. There's "default", "1", "2", and "3". And for some reason default is not selected out of the box. After fixing this, setting both DX and S3 to maximum brightness with auto brightness turned off, the S3 was about 80% as bright as the DX. However, the auto setting sucks big time on the S3. I disabled it and installed lux which allows you to define your own custom levels of light sensor to brightness settings and interpolates linearly or logrithmically between linked points. It's worked flawlessly so far and hasn't consumed any significant battery.

3) The Aux/headphone jack with BT is an unfortunate issue. Fortunately, if you use the samsung infuse 4g dock which fits the S3 perfectly, you can use the line level output (3.5 mm jack) on the back of the connector which not only provides a high quality line level voltage output which you don't get with a speaker level headphone output, but the BT issue doesn't occur when you have your aux cable plugged into it. The dock can be had from AT&T for $17.99 free shipping.

4) Strangely enough, I haven't seen this annoying wifi notification even once when I have wifi turned off manually and the "don't connect automatically" check box off. I'm assuming everyone else who's seen this has at least tried the same settings.

What I will miss most obout the DX is the tank like metal and glass build quality. I really don't like plastic phones although the S3 is about the highest quality plastic phone I've held.

Sounds like several of the S3 vary by batch. My DX definitely has better reception than the S3. Not much I can say on that.

I did not play with the color profile unfortunately. Should have tried that I guess.

I did get the infuse dock, but when I used it, it crackled and popped and had horrendously loud whine from the alternator on my new car. Definately a dock/phone issue. I have had tons of electronics in my car and never had a weird thing like that happen. It might have been from the dock usb interface with the S3. When direct to the headphone jack, it worked perfectly. Anyway, with the other issues and the dock, I didn't feel like I wanted to keep the phone.

I called Samsung and Verizon on the WiFi notice and neither knew anything about it. I did resets, and full factory resets. It also popped up while on the road as well as the numerous times at home. WiFi was never on. Neither VZW or Samsung bother to call me back when they stated they would.

Also, the whine when using the dock is not an issue with the dock, it's a ground loop issue. You probably had a charger in at the same time. Removing the charger would remove the hum. I had the same problem on my dx and had to by a noise isolator. I actually went through 5 different ones until I found one that actually worked without sacrificing audio quality:

I've used several times and docks in the identical manner as the dock that whines. I can even use the dock to charge while listening to music through the headphone jack. The dock has the issues, not the phone as far as I can tell.

I did adjust the internet brightness to full. The option to change
the color profile is not on the US version.

Yes it is. I have the Verizon US version and it's there. The fact that you didn't see it means you were in the global brightness settings and not the browswer specific settings. Don't feel bad, even after posting my instructions above in the S3 forum, users continued to claim the couldn't find the color profile until they were instructed to use the browser settings menu from within the browser app itself.

I've had the phone for 2 weeks now. In all practical use cases, the display sharper and feels brighter and more usable than my DX. I had to download Lux in order to define my own auto brightness curve, but that's about it. I know it's technically not as bright as the DX, but it's easier to see in bright light partly due to size and partly due to the insane contrast ratio.

To ensure I get this right:
1) System brightness (done that) Slider bar.
2) Internet brightness (done that) Slider bar.
3) Color profile that is in the browser? Pre set selection, not slider?
I.e .there is three settings to adjust the phone brightness? Why would the color profile be in the browser settings? Does the color profile effect the system or just the internet browser color?

Copy, that does me no good. My primary issue is when I use GPS/google maps in my car dock in the window, it's not bright enough unlike my DX. The color hue in the browser is no concern.

Sure.

I've had just the opposite experience. I use google maps during my 4 hour round trip commute from Merced to Santa Clara and I've found the S3 much easier to than the DX was.

What I do miss though and don't think anything will have match it, is the DX's stock motrola windshield mount.

DX and Razr have better 3G reception with the first kernel version, but only marginally better than the GS3 with the newer kernel.

4G reception is great

Call and text range are the same as DX and Razr

Samsung should have set the display to a better brightness setting, since I had the same problem with a demo phone when first released and posted a rant about it. My GS3 out of box did not have the problem and the store mentioned they had to mess with their demo to correct the issue. There are three settings that can result in the dim display. When corrected, 50% is plenty bright and 100% is ludicrous speed bright. None the less, the display and touch response are great, and easily the best display and button design so far for gaming (no accidental touch of nav buttons).

The one issue that needs fixed is the power draw in weak signal 3G areas and to some degree 4G areas. Medium to good signal has amazing battery life, but polar opposite with low signal.

Back to the DX again...
