16:9 v. 4:3 Photo Resolution

For some reason that I can't quite figure out, the resolution of photos taken in 4:3 format (3264x2448) is higher resolution than when taken in 16:9 resolution (3264x1840). This seems incredibly counter-intuitive. I would think that 16:9 would be full resolution, with 4:3 being cropped. But it looks like it is the other way around.

Anyone done a comparison to see if this difference translates to better picture quality when shooting in 4:3?

If it's anything like the Rezound then I think you start off with 4:3 shots, and when you switch to 16:9, it simply crops the top & bottom to give it that ratio. I know when you go to edit a photo and select crop, it crops the pic and saves it as a new one, leaving the original unaltered. So 16:9 is probably just cropping it at the time the photo is taken.

I actually am glad it does it the other way as I prefer 4:3 for photos.

Just curious, why? I have done some testing, and I believe the 16:9 is a better quality pic. I take the same pic, both ways, and I can zoom in and see more detail in distance on 16:9. (can read signs on wide that cant read on 4:3).

I am not set on 16:9, just want to figure out which is "best" and set it and leave it.

I think one thing that might be better, is if you use 4:3, I think less of the pic would get cropped out if you instagram it. Have not tried yet.

Knowing now that 16:9 is just 4:3 with the top and bottom cropped off (evident by the resolution at each setting), it seems impossible that 16:9 is even as good as, forget better than, 4:3.

As far as Instagram..... If you're just going to ruin the picture anyway, what difference does it make what quality it started out as?
