Help Help: Samsung Galaxy S2 won't connect to Kies

I did what this guy says and after rebooting the phone(connected to pc via usb and KIES started all time of this process), after the phone rebooted windows 7 installed a new driver (samsung phone modem driver). After this it synced automaticly with KIES. Happy to upgrade this bad boy to ICS !!:D
Good luck to everyone having problems with their GS2.

I had this problem, here was my fix:

Plug the phone into the USB.
Turn phone off, hold lock and select Turn Off.
Wait.
After its off and loads the Battery Charging icon, turn it back on.
Wait.
It should send the driver info to the computer and recognize it.

If it doesn't work for you, it might be because I enabled USB debugging prior to restarting it. It works in Kies now.

i tried to connect my S2 to KIES while the USB tethering was active. doesnt it get connected in that mode? turned off tether and it gets connected.
I was trying to check out whether there is any update to the ICS already installed. since I have only the mobile 3G to get online, I would like to know whether there is a way of getting connected to KIES with USB tethering turned on. Please advise on this.
Thank you.

I had issues using Kies and windows xp and wanted to share what I had done. Just got my my player in and it's the non-US version (Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0).

I tried what most had said about switching debug on/off, connect disconnecting but nothing worked. I was looking the the setting menu and under USB Management, there was an option under Wireless and Network > USB settings and there are 3 options - Samsung Kies, Media Player, Mass Storage. I picked Samsung Kies and reconnected and it worked.

I realize this might not be an option available since this thread is for the S2, but thought I'd share in case anyone had any luck.

Thanks for the all the advice in this thread, but none of the above worked for me, after spending half a day trying it all.

Got this advice from the horse's mouth (Samsung).... Worked for me. Now I'm back into Kies (for what it's worth);

Hope it helps:-

What probably happened is the USB drivers for mobile phones did not get updated along with Kies after the automatic/prompted update. Please follow the steps below in order to rectify this issue:

- First, ensure Kies is not open and disconnect any connected devices from the PC
- Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs OR Uninstall a Program
- In the list, locate Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones then click uninstall or remove
- When the uninstall is complete, launch Kies This took over an hour for me
- In Kies, click Tools > Troubleshoot Connection Error then click start
- When this process is complete, click Complete
- Turn the device off then back on to refresh the driver data. Alternatively, hold down the HOME key on the phone, tap the button to enter Task Manager, tap the RAM tab, then 'Clear Device Memory'.
- Ensure USB debugging is off on the device via Settings > Applications > Development
- Return the phone to the home screen, ensuring it is 'awake' but idle at the home screen, then reconnect the device.
- Please note that is may take several minutes for Kies to recognise the device - Windows will always recognise the device before Kies does as it has to install additional drivers from device memory.

My Galaxy S2 could not be detected on either Windows 7 or Odin.Had upgraded Android 2.3.4 after rooting.
Found the tips below on forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317916

That finally did the job for me! Many thanks to Ashtwinks!

1. When the phone is upgraded to Android 2.3.4 and above (mine is 2.3.6) Kies stops recognizing the phones and USB connection / Serial port connections etc get reset on the phone
2. Even if proper drivers are there on the laptop (mine is Windows 7 64bit) they are not recognized
3. Device Manager shows "unknown device"
4. Updating the driver also does not result in any help
5. solution lies in the phone
a. key in the dialer *#7284#
b. it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
c. For USB. select the PDA.if it already selected to PDA. reselect it by select MODEM and then PDA again.. Only change the USB setting.. andthen press back. try reconnect (thanks to napi1 @ androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/447145-sgs2-kies-not-syncing-os-2-3-5-a.html#post3484588)
6. The Laptop will start recognizing the required drivers and install them

Phone is not recognized by laptop when it is in USB debug mode, MyPhoneExplorer does not recognize when it is not in Debug mode
Have just spent hours trying to get Kies to work. Problem sorted eventually by ticking USB debugging and installing MyPhoneExplorer on WI Fi. Worked perfectly 1st time. Superb. Many thanks

I had the same problem as many others: Samsung Galaxy S2 (ICS) would not connect to Kies via USB (Win 7 x64)

Solution that worked for me:
• Turned off phone. Removed battery, SD card and SIM
• Turned on the phone
• Started Kies on pc
• Connected phone via USB
• => Kies successfully connected to the phone!
• Disconnected USB
• Turned off the phone. Inserted SD card, SIM and battery
• Turned on the phone, connected USB cable
• => Kies successfully connected to the phone!
• Synced memo only - success
• Synced todo only - success
• Synced contacts only - success
• Synced schedule only - success
• All working normally!

Had previously removed SIM card without success. So, not sure which step worked, but it did!
I had also tried installing Kies to Vista (x32). Kies installed ok, but still would not connect to the phone. It appears that Kies actually works, but the phone got into an unknown state.

normally when i search forums for solutions, 99% i would simply search awhile and get my answers from a few trial and errors. but for this solution i would like to express my gratitude as this WORKED LIKE MAGIC. i thought the dialer thing was pretty cool lol but the point is that i've already tried all options including the debug, switching on and off and all basic trials, but Kies still refused to work with my mac. until i dialed *#7284#, (pda was selected by default) selected modem first, pressed back, then dialed again, and selected back to pda, my galaxy w was connected in a heartbeat.

FOR ALL MAC USERS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH KIES AND THEIR GALAXY, THIS IS THE BOMB. thank you :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

hey guys,

I too like many of you have had the same problem with my S2 not connecting with kies and ive tried everything that everyone has suggested on this thread from enabling usb debugging mode, to enabling usb debugging mode and disenabling it right after, tried taking both sim and usb out, tried installing windows media player 11, tried the #7284# dial tone procedure (when i dial the number it simply says "connection problem or invalid MMI code"), tried simply turning phone on and off.

however i tried the one method of going into setting>wireless & network> usb utilities and putting it in usb mass storage mode and the drivers run (the little popup that hardware wizard has found your device) but then it prompts me with a message saying

"Reconnect device in Samsung kies (Pc Studio) mode. current connection mode not supported by kies. Check usb setting-> applications-> development-> usb debugging (x))"

i will follow exactly in these instructions and usually the drivers connect just as before but i get the exact same message prompt even though I just did it....it confuses the hell out of me and i dont know what to do! im about to throw my phone out the window! can some please help me with this ive practically tried all of the previous methods and nothing has worked!

I have tried everything and nothing has really worked. I contacted samsung and followed their advice. My phone can now occasionally connect to kies but it still will not back any data up, so i dont even dare try an upgrade. It seems to lose connection to the phone. Have contacted samsung again for further support. very frustrating!!
