Replacing a broken screen...so should I just cancel my warranty coverage now?

Do you have any phone tech businesses near you? If they are good, then they will replace all of the tamper-proof decals with the real thing from HTC, and your warranty will still be good.

Or, you could send your phone to either HTC if you live in the west, or PCD if you live in the east. Either way you will be getting a repair by an authorized HTC repair agency and it will not void your warranty. For comparison, when we had our Droid Eris phones, we sent one to PCD because of a broken screen, they did a great job and it cost about $120. It took about 8-10 days including shipping.

But remember, Rezounds are not common out there. Even though they are damn good phones, they just did not sell like they should have. Make sure that anyplace you take or send it has previous experience with the Rezound.

Edit: Just saw that you are in Pittsburgh. If you send the phone in, it would go to PCD in Happaugue NY, on Long Island, so the shipping time for you would be much shorter. So take 4 days off what it took getting a phone to them and back to Florida.

I'm not sure what you are looking for from the community but is verizon ever going to actually know you replaced the screen? Why not just use the warranty to get it fixed?

I typically don't buy the warranty because these things depreciate so fast and using the warranty costs another $100+ anyway. But YMMV.

I don't have the $10 a month warranty which covers things like accidents. I have the $2 a month coverage which covers things going wrong with the phone (defects).

Thanks for the advice. Not sure what I'd do without my phone for that long (it is my only means of contact). Maybe I could get a tracfone and forward the number. Also, the replacement screen is about 1/3 of the cost of having someone replace it. But if they can save my warranty I might go that route. I was able to replace my OG Droid and my wife replaced her incredible two times over using the warranty so I've found them to be pretty valuable.

If you are thinking about sending your phone in, there is a place in Gainesville, FL that does great work. They replace all the decals, etc. The place is Re-Tech, and the web site is ReTech | Gainesville, FL | Smartphone, Repairs, Phone, iPod, Locally Owned, Protect, Otterbox, Service, Off-Contract. They might replace the screen for less than PCD. They replaced the digitizer on my Eris when it failed and only charged about $70. But that required only a new digitizer, which is separate from the display screen it's self, so yours might be more.

Give Re-Tech, or anyone else that has a good reputation, a call and see if they will let you ship your phone in. Of course, shop around for best price too.

BTW I dropped off my Eris on a Friday at about 3:00pm, and it was ready by noon on the next day. So they can be quick, and could possibly get the phone back to you fast. PCD is authorized, etc. but they take about 4 days in house before they return the phone. And, they won't let you pay for the service in advance. You have to wait until they mail (yes, mail) you an estimate, then pay, then they ship out your phone the next day. Re-Tech handles it all at once, and will call you when the phone ships back to you, and they are fast and good.

So I have to send them my phone, wait for an estimate, and then give them the go ahead to do the work? Or are they just doing the work and then telling you how much it will cost? Not sure I like either of those options.

Re-Tech in Gainesville will tell you what it is going to cost upfront, before you send the phone in. If they don't know the price of the screen and don't have one in stock, they will probably call you back with the exact figure when they have it. At worst, they will ask you to call them back the next day so they can give you an exact figure. THEN you decide if you want to send it in.

Re-Tech gave me the estimate on the Eris screen replacement on Friday at about noon. I had to do some errands, so kept the phone until I was done. Dropped it off at about 3:00 pm, on my way home They called me at home at about 11:00 the next morning, Saturday, that it was ready.

The place that doesn't give you an estimate or bill until they have the phone apart is PCD in New York.

Thanks, I just reread your post and realized what you were saying.
