We don't have to synthesize our methanol a.k.a. wood alcohol form crude oil. We can also use ethanol, which would probably be better since ethanol burning is invisible. I wouldn't want that in my home! Or my pocket!
BTW, the US gets most of its oil from countries in North America and South America, including the US. We don't depend on the middle east for our energy needs.
Sorry 'bout that! All you need to know is one of these things can be carried around and used to power your cellphone if the battery dies.
