Anyone else having bad luck with VoIP calling on the $30 Walmart plan?

I've been on the T-Mobile $30 unllimited data plan for a few weeks now and so far, it's pretty good! However, I can't seem to figure out why my Groove IP calls are so choppy and lag like crazy. I've tried a lot of different settings, going to sipdroid or csipsimple, but no dice with them either.

Some helpful information:
  • I'm using a G2x rooted with Phoenix Hellfire ROM
  • Speedtest results are generally 4MB down, 1.5MB up
  • I'm in a major city with tons of full bar 4G coverage
  • When running speedtest, I notice there are huge spikes on UL and DL
  • I seem to lose 4G in some buildings (expected)
  • No setting seems to fix anything on Groove IP

Has anyone else had this issue? If so, did you find a fix or just move on? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Edit: here is an example of a recent speed test

Have you tried T-Mobile's own WiFi calling app? Works pretty good...

That uses minutes on mine, and I am not sure that it is available for pre paid plans (it might be).

As far as the OPs question, I don't have enough experience with it, but I think that there is a thread for grooveip (I will try to find it) that one of the devs frequents.

Im using Google voice and it works without problem . Same g2x setup.

Did you have to change any settings and are you using the latest version of groove ip? Would you mind uploading a picture of your speedtest app so I can figure out if it's just the network where I live?

Thanks for the help so far, I would love to stay with T-Mobile but if this 3/4g calling can't work then it's off to another network (simple mobile or straight talk, maybe?) sadly.

Im only using Google voice. Im able to make calls no problem and get consistent 4g. Ive never used groove ip.

If i misunderstood your issue, i apologize.

I will upload a speed test in a few hours and see how it compares to your speeds.

I'm assuming you're on a contract.

If so, you can go online, or go to the store and have them add wifi calling that doesn't use your minutes.
I believe it's a part of the features section of the plan. and it's no extra cost. just like visual voice mail
