Would like to hear peoples opinions on the topic of the taking down or not taking down the statue of former Penn State coach Joe Paterno. Since he knew what Jerry Sandusky was doing ( need I explain ) & did nothing about it, is it right to leave the statue up in his honor.

Remember to follow forum rules & respect other members as this is a very passionate subject for some.

I have no dog in this fight... as I dont really care either way.......

but at some point you have to ask where do we draw the line?

what does the statue represent? all his years and dedication which put Penn on the map? the fact that without him they would be little better off than most community colleges? or was it erected in honor of his devotion to prevention of child molestation?

are all the things he did to earn the statue erased by his misdeeds?

and if thats the case....... then are the people calling for the statue to be torn down also willing to part with any of the benefits he brought to them?

will they tear down any building that he generated the funding for? will any NFL player who went through his program retire in protest?

dont get me wrong...... what hes accused of is disgusting if its true....... but does it eliminate everything else he ever did?

I put this in the same category as Michael Vick and dog fighting, Pete Rose and gambling, OJ and murder.......

I dont have a problem if the statue is torn down.. and his name ripped from history....... however...... along with it rip away everything else he brought to the place..... including probably 99% of their funding for decades

Just turn it around so he has his back to everything. :smokingsomb:

although amusing, what does it say about you as an ND fan that you are apparently wandering around the web to do nothing more than comment on paterno-related stories?

first, i think anyone with a functioning brain who was not a psu fan knew this paterno coverup news was coming. it was totally obvious immediately that he couldn't have been entirely in the dark.

as for the statue, it's very difficult, and i think copestag nailed the difficulty. if the statue represents the achievements of a whole man, how does one adequately reconcile those achievments with a singular, huge failure?

it is even more complicated because it is quite likely that many of the decisions about sandusky were made with an implicit eye towards not causing undue drama in (i.e. to protect) the football program.

i don't know the answer to this. i really don't. i think the most reasonable would be to somehow alter it to reflect what i presume (hope?) was great regret and shame on the part of paterno. how one does that with a statue of this nature, i'm not sure.

it just so happened it was my first post, im not going around the internet making fun of joe paterno fans. I joined up on this website because the other android forum i was on didnt have enough people talking about the new nexus7. In fact i am actually on the support joe paterno page on facebook. I dont believe joe pa covered anything up. So your assumption was way off base.
Thank you and have a nice day.
