Well, I went and did it. I rooted, then I installed MobileOdin and flashed the md5 from the Austrian/UK version - the one for the P6210 of course.

I like it a lot, though there may have been a glitch in the upgrade (which is one of the reasons I don't plan to give a step by step on how I did it... if anything it was almost too easy :) )

A lot faster now, though. Smoother.

I used mobile Odin to flash ics. It was a very easy process and I even kept root after I flashed. So far the plus is like a different machine. It is so smooth and most of my apps work better. Most of the lag is gone as well. I did some YouTube videos on ics and how to install it. Just search 2ndaccord on YouTube and u will see my channel.

How is it faster/smoother?

Has the battery life changed? Did it get better or worse?

The rest of us are still waiting for ICS to be released in our regions!

Thanks!

I'm in the US and I've loaded up the UK ICS ROM through Odin. Touchwiz using ICS is a lot faster and smoother than it was on HC. Virtually no lag at all when launching apps and going in and out of the app drawer.

Quadrant scores (if you care about that stuff) have jumped up as well.

For me battery life is about the same. No noticeable changes.

Other things that have improved is the Peel app. I tried to use it when I first got the tab about a couple of months ago and it was horrible. Now, it's really fun to use.

Like xmr405o, I am in the US, but downloaded the UK region rom and installed it myself. I used the mobile version of Odin since I am more comfortable/familiar with it; though the regular version of Odin is probably a safer bet for those who can't wait, and want to upgrade themselves.

As far as smoother, everything seems to go easier, more fluid. I sense no more hesitation when I start apps, or transitions between screens, scrolling is even and steady. Also, I have limited experience with it but the video playback seems much improved in that limited experience since the upgrade.

Even my game apps seem to run more fluidly, menus come up more quickly, it's like it had previously been holding back.

The closest thing I have seen in comparison is that honeycomb reminds me of when a database is running low on tablespace, so it goes into garbage collection mode every time you try to write to the table, which causes small lags in every operation. Then later you add more tablespace (expand it , add another file, etc) ; , that reminds me of ICS, that lag that was taxing every operation is gone, and everything goes smoothly. That is really what it reminds me of the most.

Thank you very much for the replies. :D

Hopefully, for the rest of us with Unrooted Tab devices in the USA, Samsung will release ICS soon (er than later).

I hope for the same. Even though the UK rom works great, I'd rather have the official US rom. I'll load up stock HC again when the US version is released.

By the way, I am also unrooted and have never rooted my tab. The desktop version of odin doesn't require a rooted device. Mobile odin does, I believe.

You are correct about Mobile Odin, though I found the rooting method for the Honeycomb tab to be so ridiculously easy - basically just load a root.zip onto the external SD card using KIES and then reboot into recovery mode and select the root.zip.
Rooting the ICS version is only slightly more complex.

There is hope for relief on the proper ROMs soon. Today the Hong Kong variant for the 7.7 tab 3G, the P6800 , was released early this morning. That is the first Galaxy tab ICS outside of the UK/Austrian region (I think actually all the same region) , so more could be following along.

Today two variants of ICS were dropped , one for the T869 (T mobile version of the Tablet +) listed as ICS 4.0.5.

The other was for region "Cellular South" of the P6210 (why there would be a cellular company version of a 6210, when I thought 6210 was for wifi only, I can't be sure), this was Android 4.0.4. Good news for sure.

Check the other thread!

ICS is Now available in USA!
Download and install through Kies!

Kies sucks. Multiple installs on a WinXP machine, install stuck on HotFix, multiple crashes, firmware update failure, etc... Took 2 days, finally got it to dump ICS on the tablet. Kies is obviously designed for Win7, as it's SLOW.

ICS is fine on the 7.0, runs faster, and I finally can get Chrome. Hated Dolphin!

EDIT: 24 hrs use, turned on again at 8:30 AM, battery at 58% after 12 hrs now, everything is faster, especially Chrome. Dolphin was bogging down and got buggy, so liking Chrome. No other issues, ICS was worth the Kies hassles.

Yes, Kies obviously sucks, just like how Media Go sucks for Sony phones, but it's the only media software provided by the company and possibly the only way to download OS updates.

ICS does run smoother on the 7+ though some of the apps do crash

Battery life hasn't really improved, though :(

Hate Chrome and the stock browser still does NOT include a Page Up feature!

Traversing across Symbian to Android, and through four forums, I've always encountered people saying the PC Suites companies give sucks, but I never had troubles with such programs. They load up fine on my end, and while startup is a bit slower than say, Outlook (which is slow), they are all smooth once inside. So I honestly don't get all the "Kies hate" I see. :D

Unless maybe it's because my laptop is more than overkill for the recommended system reqs for Kies (I can load Kies and Ovi Suite and sync two phones at the same time with no lag at all). In which case I'd tell people to upgrade their computers. It's wrong to hit on the programs in that scenario IMO. Anyway, South East Asia still has no ICS. :(

Downloaded Kies to pc, connected tablet, followed instructions and did not interfere. Android 4.0.4 installed on my 16gb (wifi only) 7.0 plus. Have not done much with Kies. To me it is just a portal for updating. Kind of like Itunes. I prefer Windows explorer drag-n-drop. I am really more accustomed to Creative's music player interface, more windows-like. Anyway, the wait is over, I now have ICS. Had been thinking of selling this tablet but will hold on to it for now. Interface seems smoother.
