if you are goin CM, get the CM Safe Kernel.

Follow the instructions here : CM9 How To Install Link.

Once you have flashed the CM9 Safe Kernel proceed to install CM9/10. Do not under ANY circumstances flash from an ICS ROM unless you have verified that you do not have the BrickBug.

If you want to make sure, this is the link to the Got Brick Bug? app written by ChainFire.

LOL ok in summary Samsung's official ICS Kernel has a bug that can potentially brick your phone.

When you are moving to Cayanogen Mod, you will need to perform a Data Wipe using the recovery. Now, keeping in mind that you might be on ICS at this time, else you wouldnt be asking the question, when you do perform a data wipe thats when the ICS Kernel bug is invoked.

Now there are a few "Safe Kernals" out there that are compiled by after market devs that will allow you to perform a data wipe and not brick your phone.

Now for CM you need a Kernel aka a Kernel Compiled by one of the CM Devs, that will support it. Again, there are whole bunch of kernels out there but i would suggest you find one on XDA.

Its not that simple is it? :)

and to answer your other question: Yes. it is safe. I tried it for a few hours last night but went back to CM9 aka ICS cos CM10 aka JB is not quite ready yet.
