USA Olympic Team uniform is made in China - Congress is fuming.

That's disgusting...and a slap in the face to American textile workers. Hopefully Ralph Lauren won't manufacture the clothes for the next Olympics!

Do you know how many other Olympic teams use stuff made overseas? I cannot believe that this is the only example of our teams using foreign made goods. I guess Congress and the public needs something to get upset over these days.

Sure...for the same reason that American embassies overseas drive Cadillacs and Lincolns, and not Rolls Royces, Mercedes, and so on. Because they represent America.
I hope they are paying taxes on them, pushing up our emissions
They should be driving the best value car (initial cost + cost over x years), not the one thats 100% American except for the fuel, the engine, the seats and the steel.

Yep, sure should. Everything should be made in America. Especially when it's a world event!
If everything was made in America the economic effects would be dire and your export market would collapse. Protectionism = wasted economic resources.

Well he who pays the piper calls the tune and the US Gov't isn't the one doing the paying when it comes to the US Olympic team.

If most of Europe mandated that all their equipment would have to be made in their country (I'm pretty sure that would be illegal but anyway), they would be wearing woolen sweaters and rowing with rebar in dingies.

So you're saying if all the uniforms for the Olympic teams are made in the USA, it can collaspe the export market? Hmmm, and I don't see how it would be wasted economic resources.

No one mention we should make everything in the world.

Im applying our "Everything should be made in America" statement to all public purchases. You do this and you get the WTO after you and countries raise tariffs.
As for the wasted economic resources, its a consequence of protectionism in general.

When I said "Everything should be made in America", I meant the USA Olympic teams uniforms, since it is the topic of this thread.

But I give, you guys win...imho, this is part of why America is falling and she can't get up. As long as the "We the people" don't give a dayum, it gonna continue to go downhill.

I remember during Vietnam war how We the people protested and help bring an end to it. Now day's its unpatriotic to protest wars. Even if it's a senseless war.

So if we were to expand this out and really think about it, every country should only be using equipment that is made in their own country? Marathon runners from Uganda should only be wearing shoes made in Uganda? Mexican javelin throwers should only use Mexican javelins? Anybody realize how silly this is and what a nightmare it would be to regulate to make sure nobody is cheating equipment-wise?

If you did a little research you would discover how strong we are. Let's get the gubbermint off manufacturers, companies, entrepreneurs and just do it. Solving our problems is easy. More so than many seem to think.

Lets get rid of stifling and silly environmental laws, reform tort laws, reform welfare, give tax breaks to those that want to invest and bet of her people.

Perhaps then we will revive the textile industry and make things better, here.
