Hi All,

First time to rooting, just got my ATT galaxy s3 2 weeks ago. did some research and found some tutorials. I successfully flashed CWM recovery with ODINv3 1.85 and was able to boot into CWM recovery and install superuser, so fully rooted. Then i decided to try a custom ROM (Tuchmi s3x), downloaed the zip. file and moved to internal SD storage, and install from there. Installation succeeded, however after it reboots, its stuck at the screen ( Android is updating, starting applications). I waited long time and nothing changed so I pulled the battery and the phone soft-bricked(maybe not, im not sure) so i found some tutorials again to flash back the stock ROM, and it worked so i am back on stock ROM and unrooted. So when i try to root my phone again and repeat the root procedure, flash CWM with odinv3 1.85 and succeeded again, moved zip file to internal storage, and reboot. HOWEVER, it just wont boot in CWM anymore...it will always go to stock recovery. the button combo is Volume Up + Home + Power and release Power after sumsamg logo.

Any help is appreciated. I just want to root it again and maybe some help with installing custom ROM after rooting.

Thanks

Well it could be that the install of CWM didn't take, but if you think it did see below.

Download this

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&feature=nav_result#?t=W10.

It is the official Clockwork app. Open the app, it will ask for superuser permissions, grant it. Then you'll see an option that says Reboot into Recovery. Press that.

Thanks for the advise

It would work if my phone was rooted. Because I unrooted my phone and flashed stock ROM, so the superuser is gone and cant give su permission to ROM manager. I cant get into the CWM to root my phone again. its a dead loop. LOL.

I tried again no luck. on the odin , everything is fine, it resets and passed, green sign. But it just wont boot into CWM when i press Volume up + Home + power, basically the phone resets, stays on black screen and never goes into CWM, after i release Power, it vibrates but it goes to stock recovery.

any idea ?

The only thing I could recommend is going over to XDA and finding a stock rom that has root injected into it. Flash through ODIN
[HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - Updated [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers] - xda-developers

That link gives you the stock rom that has root injected.

Then I would recommend going with TWRP recovery instead.

Here are the instructions for that(taken from this link xda-developers - View Single Post - [RECOVERY]TWRP 2.2.1 with on-screen keyboard! [2012-07-24] )

  1. Download with Goo Manager. (Hit the menu button(left key next to home)Download OpenRecovery Script)
If you couldn't get it downloaded, I upped it here and here.
  2. Reboot into recovery once it says it's done, to see if it works.
For me, it didn't, so I installed recovery manually.
  3. To do this, find the file that Goo Manager downloaded (in Goo: settings > download path), and move it where you like, for these instructions it will be moved to "/sdcard" and renamed to "recovery.img"
  4. (you will need a terminal emulator for these final steps)
  5. In the terminal, type "su" and press enter.
  6. Grant superuser access if asked.<LI sizset="12" sizcache="0">Then, type "dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18"

[*]Make sure that you typed that right before pressing enter.
    Press enter.
  7. To see if it worked, reboot into recovery!
  8. Enjoy your new recovery!
I have left CWM and went to TWRP recovery. Much better interface.

What root method did both of yall use?

Initially I used the Team Win root method which worked for me, but it does trip the flash counter. Then I used triangle away to get the flash counter back to 0.

Installed CWM from Team Win, and then used a CWM flashable to upgrade to the touch CWM. Then I went to TWRP recovery from there.

Can you give me the link to reset the counter. I have done a lot of flashing and I want it back to zero now

THe app is available for free over at XDA or you can support the dev of the app and buy it from the play store.

Here is the link at XDA - Chainfire (dev of the app) made it available for free

[18.07.2012][ROOT] TriangleAway v1.70 - xda-developers

To support him, you can buy it from the Play Store

Apparently for those who have ran the official update by samsung are having this issue where the stock recovery is overwriting CWM recovery after reboot. Here is how to fix the issue. Credit to Max from Galaxys3root

You will need to rename or delete these two files.

/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh

I just renamed them. I'm thinking once there is a offical update such as jelly bean that I want to update too ill just rename them back so the stock recovery will reload and allow the update.

This is what I did. I ran Odin, but deselected both "reboot" and "reset time." Once Odin read PASS, I unplugged the phone from the PC and removed the battery. Re-insert, and immediately boot into Recovery (Vol UP, Power, Home). After Odin, do not let the phone reboot normally - I think that's where the overwrite catch is.

Also, I recommend this method: [Root]/[Restore]Our ATT SGS3 Tested working! - xda-developers.

I had similar issues. I didn't root until after the AT&T update. had to run Odin again to install CWM. If I pull the battery I do get CWM, but I think just one time. If I reboot into recovery again it goes to stock recovery. Will I need reflash CWM with Odin everytime in order to get to it?

I'm still fairly new to android and am a little leary of renaming or replacing files.

Total n00b here so bear with me.
This is for AT&T Galaxy S3 SGH-I747 after OTA update.

I downloaded CWM recovery "cwm6-recovery-n7100-121014.tar" using ODIN "Odin3 v3.07.exe" making sure reboot is deselected. I got the green pass after it got done downloading.

Here is what I did after that
1) Remove battery
Phone still shows the stock bootloader screen at this point.

2) Unplug usb cable
Phone screen goes dark

3) Put battery back in
nothing happens

4) Hold down vol down, power and home button

Sadly it gives me the warning screen about using other bootloaders and when I press the vol up key, it comes up with the default bootloader.

I am totally confused as to what I am doing wrong.

Thanks for any help,
Amish

Hey. After you flash CWM in Odin and it passes, you need to unplug the phone from the computer, take the battery out, replace the battery, & hold volume UP not down, home, & power buttons simultaneously. When you feel the phone vibrate, release the power button but continue to hold the volume up & home buttons until you see the Samsung Galaxy S3 boot screen. You can release all buttons then. This will take you into CWM. You next need to flash the Superuser.zip that you placed on your SD card. Atter that, reboot the phone and download root browser. You are going to need to change the two files mentioned a few post above this one. After you rename those 2 files, you will be able to boot into CWM every time by using the volume up, home, & power button method that I gave you. I had this same problem that a few of you are having. It took me a little while to figure it out. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THOSE 2 FILENAMES!!! If you dont, you will have to flash CWM every time you wanna use it! Screw that!!! Sorry this post was so long.

I always get those VOL buttons mixed up. So this is what I remember. Download mode > use the down button.

Download mode (only when flashing with Odin...) = Vol. Down + Power + HOME
CWM Recovery = Vol. UP + Power + HOME
After 2 days of scratching my head, this post saved me, thanks very much for taking the time to post that, now I can finally have a beer thanks to you!
