Help Battery discussions, maintaining battery life

I overhead someone today who had the gs3 saying "yeah I get like 6 hrs of battery life on this!" As if it were a good thing.. so I guess it depends on your opinion of "good" current battery life... I take my evo off the charger at 730 am and sometimes dont come home to until the am lol... dont carry a charger with me and im on my phone constantly.. I can always find my friends at night as long as I find an outlet lol

Best battery life so far for me.

MeanROM 1.6, OC'd to 1.8. Battery option in Root. Latest radio installed. Nova Launcher smooth scrolling options for apps really helps with any minor lag you may encounter.

Not having 3G when there is no need, helps a lot. Even though Mean shuts down the data connection on screen off, it is still trying to reconnect anytime you might want to check the time or something quick.

Ok so I unplugged my phone fully charged yesterday around 1:30 or 2:00 pm. Didn't really use it other than a few text messages until about 6:15, when I went down to the gym and streamed music for about 45 minutes. Went home, and was on the phone for about about 20 minutes sending texts or looking at the internet, went to bed, woke up around 7:00 and took the following screen shot:

I was on my phone for another 45 minutes or so, looking at the internet, and streaming some music, and by around 10:00 am I was down to 11%. So all in all I got about 2 hours of active use, with 20 hours of total standby time, until I was down to 11%.

Next time you get a chance, tap that gray graph at the top and post the resulting screen as a screenshot - that's the one that will tell us something. I personally treat that main screen as eye candy. ;)

Here is the graph. This is after it's been on the charger for about 1 1/2 hours, connected to Wifi the entire time. Basically since yesterday at 2:00 pm I've been connected to Wifi other than for about an hour.

You definitely have something running out of control there, bupulo. :(

Note in my graph below that when my screen is off, the phone is not awake save for some occasional mail or weather sync activity. And the periods where the screen is off corresponds to the graph showing essentially a flat line of little or no power loss.

On yours, in that large gap where the screen is off, the phone is constantly waking up to do something at a hard staccato pace.

Whatever that process is, that's what's wearing our your battery.

Are you running Twitter/Facebook/other-social-networking apps set to sync constantly or something?

Does Open Signal Maps show you tower-hopping?

This is an early battery shot I took. Notice how the drop is decreasing in the periods when the screen is off. I believe this is a decent example of the calibration file being built up -

As it's settling in, I think it's time to safely report that if I just use it to download vids via wifi with screen on auto-brightness (tested both day and night), I am consistently dropping about 10% per hour under that use case.

I'm very impressed.

That screen shot was from when I was running a stock configuration, not rooted.

Just curious ...I never really looked at these before...does this seem normal? I was on the phone a lot today. I typically average 6% (medium use) to 10% (heavy use) of a battery drain per hour.

The only thing I can think of was I had my Exchange Email Account syncing every 15 minutes (because when I was setting it up it said that Push Syncing used up the most power). I now changed it to "Smart Sync" during peak time. Is that what I should have it on, or should I use push? I need to have pretty up to date email notification because of work.

I had facebook syncing (I've now turned it off), but other than that the only other things I had syncing were Mail (to which both my Gmail and Exchange accounts were syncing) and Google (for contacts and calendar).

I ain't got nothing else running.

Not bad, could be better. I average 10% per hour while streaming video via wifi, screen on auto-brightness, but can lose only a few percent over periods of screen off / no activity.

Yeah, I would sure try to experiment with those Exchange settings regardless of what they said, and definitely give push a go.

Man, I know we have threads talking about how to get Exchange squared away, but the light isn't coming on on where to look just yet.

There's also a utility to give you the setting to keep your wifi from automatically turning off during non-peak hours - SmartSync Disabler -

HTC introduced SmartSync with Sense ICS (all devices), which shall provide you the best battery life for your device.

Unfortunatly HTC messed it up again, because theres no interface to control this powersaving feature.

Isn't a problem you think? It is, and I tell you why:

HTC SmartSync system forces the wifi and data connections to go do sleep/disconnect after 15 minutes screen off time between 00:00 and 07:00 am.

For some this isnt an issue, but for some it is important to have a constant data/wifi connection during night.

With this app you can deactivate this behaviour.

Works for unlocked AND locked devices

I think you want that nonsense turned off so that Exchange doesn't have to fight with it.

Battery life has always been an issue with this phone. I use it mostly to check email about 7 or 8 times a day. I usually don't make more than 1 or 2 short(1-2 min) phone calls and I am on wifi since I rarely leave the house(twin toddlers). I do go through my apps and task manager about ten times a day to stop programs, mostly Maps and flickr, which is disabled. I sync Fb and the weather every 3 hours and I leave the GPS off, unless I'm trying to use Google Maps. I have yet to make it all the way to bedtime before my phone dies.

I tried to get a screenshot of Open Signal Maps, but it stops responding within a few seconds of opening it.

I feel the need to interject here. This is not aimed at any one individual or device, just a statement of the situation so please don't take it the wrong way.

While battery and phone technology have improved many people are still looking for the same battery life they used to get out of older dumb phones. This is not possible with the current level of technology, you are basically carrying what amounts to a computer in your hand, one that surpasses the first system I built for myself in 1999, second in 2001 and rivals the third in 2002.

I have been with Android since the Hero and have owned the OG Evo, 3D and now the 4G LTE. Battery life was not a steady progression from phone to phone, and with the OG and 3D I had higher capacity batteries but could still drain a 4000mAH in the 3D in 12 hours on a heavy day, but my usage is what most people would call extreme, sometimes logging 5+ hours a day on the phone.

The 4G LTE is an improvement over the previous models but at only 2000mAH is not going to give tremendous life with even moderate usage. If you look at the screen shots of the people logging close to or over 24 hours there is generally little to no phone usage, and many are taking steps to maximize battery life. To expect these devices to last days is a pipe dream if you plan on using it, the technology has not arrived there yet. Maybe a few more generations down the road but not now.

I think my stock browser is going haywire. Can anyone chime in?

I tried using Chrome but it doesn't seem to help however.

Anyway that "Internet" bar seems to be awfully high, especially since I only used the internet on this phone for about 35 minutes on the train first thing this morning (the first big dip). After that, the entire dropping of battery life happened while in stand-by sitting on my desk at work. I'm not sure why "Wifi" is a solid bar as I haven't been connected to a wifi connection since early this morning. Is it because the radio is on?

Well, long story short, with much less use than the first few days (for obvious reasons, I was very excited to play with it) I am getting about half the battery life. While I am at around 44% right now, I was probably closer to 80% at this point during the day just a month ago. This seems to be a daily problem now and I have to put the phone on the charger at work just to get through another 35 minute train ride home. What is causing my phone to go from 100% to 10% over the course of a day when only about 1-2 hours of the 12 hours it's actually being used?

Do you have location services turned on in your browser(s)?

Not sure what you mean by "in the browsers" but I did have it turned on in settings for the phone. I just turned off both "Google's location service" and "location & Google search". However I am pretty sure they have always been on so I don't know why it's been losing battery significantly the past week or so.

Sorry I haven't checked the stock browser lately, but most browsers have a setting to let them track or report your location. I leave location on for my phone, off for the browsers.

Settings, Privacy and security in the stock browser.

Might have changed on the recent update.

Might also try Open Signal Maps to see if you are having any issues holding a signal on a single tower.

For some reason I can't seem to find anywhere to copy a link to this via the ebay app so I just took a screen shot. What do you guys think? I want to get an external batt for on the go and when I was in best buy these were going for 80 bucks so this is a great deal. The evo 4G lte isn't on the list of "compatible". Devices but the og and 3vo are I'm guessing the ltevo is just too new... Anyway. Seems like a good deal? No?

I'm still having battery life issues. My battery life has just about halved from when I first got the phone and I have no idea why. The phone is also running sluggish. It's taking longer to load some apps than my OG Evo and everything, from closing a window, to switching applications is delayed. The phone gets hot for no apparent reason and restarting and uninstalling everything aftermarket I'm not using hasn't seemed to help. I'm thinking about doing a full reset soon but a couple months in and I have to resort to this already? I am having bluetooth issues so I may just swap out the phone at best buy....
