Samsung Galaxy S3 user (from India) since 20 days
My first set had a problem with audio from earphones (within 3 days of purchase) - apparently the headphone jack was defective. After a lot of pleading and arguing, I got it replaced with a brand new set in the last week of June.
Now today, all of a sudden, all audio has stopped in call - neither mic or speaker (or headphones) are working during call - whats worse is that it looses signal and goes out of service after a call.
This is a serious let down from a flagship phone of the biggest player in the market.
newsflash: i just changed phones with a friend (who bought it 2 weeks later than me), his phone was fully functional, no signs of bugs or glitches...nothing. i restored it with my google and pc backups...and voila...the problem with the sound came along:hmmmm:....and after restoring my phone with his backups...sound problem gone...
wtf? i cannot rely on app bugs as we use almost the same apps...settings? where do i go wrong? i checked the settings 1000000000000 times...with all advices on forums...
Does samsung have a grudge on me, just because i was an iphone user?????:stupid:
I had a problem with my speaker not working during phone calls. The microphone worked during calls as I tested this by calling my land line. The speaker worked for other applications like music and videos. Using headphones had no effect on the phone, except that I could hear the "call end" tone when I would hang up.
I did not experience the signal lost event that the OP describes so I am led to believe that there might be separate problems with the speaker.
I did a factory reset and that solved the problem. All of my apps and information downloaded from Google automatically and it seems to still be working fine.
i have carrier branded stock firmware on my sgs3 (after few attemps of changing firmware...i decided to revert to original)
kies says now...that my device does not support update via kies
so..question is....i am blocked by my carrier to update via kies (funny is that before messing @ did not try to see that with kies) and i can do it only OTA
or i messed something up when i reverted to stock?
(i spent plenty of hours to find the specific carrier branded firmware i needed, which is bouygues telecom france)
details of the file....(tripple checked and it matches with what i had before messing up)

I had the exact same issue with my Galaxy SIII. The phone drops all signal when a call is made and even if the call goes through, the line is just dead.
Don't let anyone tell you that this is a software problem, please. I had my device sent in twice now: the first time around, they said they found nothing wrong and just sent it back. The second time they magically found the problem and said it was a component failure: they would have to replace the entire main board.
So if you have this problem, take your device in for replacement/repairs A.S.A.P. and don't let Samsung fool you by making you believe you'll just have to wait for some OTA update.
I am using the I9300 International Galaxy SIII in Australia on stock firmware. Have had the phone for about 6 weeks and it started having no sound during phone calls (in either direction).
I have been through a long list of attempted resolutions, none have worked so it's going back for warranty repair. What has been tried.
- Firmware updated via kies to latest version
- Tested Microphone via Mic application (works fine)
- Tested Speaker (works fine for music / audio, doesn't work for phone call)
- Tested 3G Data (still works, no problems)
- Had carrier send network update to the phone (updated, no change)
- Tested with earphones hands free (works fine for audio, not phone calls)
- Wiped phone completely and reconfigured from stock (same problem)
- Swapped SIM cards with other SIM from same carrier, and also tried SIM from different carrier (same audio problem during calls)
Every other function of the phone is fine, it is just voice calls. I also noticed some strange slowness around the time it started happening (perhaps the failing component is causing errors in the software?).
You can tell there is an issue as soon as you make the call because the call counter is going up, but there is no ringtone when it calls out / connects.
I did manage to fix the issue temporarily though in much the same way as has been mentioned above. I found if I tapped my fingers down the back cover of the phone, I could get it work intermittently, so this says to me it is definitely a hardware fault.
So if you're having the same issue, try all of the above so you don't get sent back out of the shop when it works for the guy behind the counter!
Had the same issue in Oz, no sound during call (no problems with mobile data or any other sound / mic issues) and signal disappears for 30 seconds after hanging up. Emailed Samsung who advised to take it back to DSE for ELF replacement as it was within the first 30 days. If it goes back to Samsung authorised repair centre they will repair it under warranty, but back to place of purchase for exchange.

Just spoke to Samsung, who advised the phone will need to be sent back for warranty repair because it is outside of 30 days (41 days!).
I am concerned because it works very intermittently, so my expectation is that it will be returned and Samsung will respond saying there is nothing wrong with it.
I use my phone as my mp3 player like many do. I "upgraded" from the HTC Thunderbolt and I really downgraded the audio to the very first tape based Walkman. I have tons of music from all over the purchasing spectrum (ripped, amazon mp3, zune, etc) and none of them sound good. The popping and crackling and dropping off is making me crazy. Verizon told me that they could replace it with a used phone and there is no other option.
Has anyone else run into this? Is there a solution?

Well its ether a hardware or software issue. If its the software, you could try rooting and trying a rom. My old thunderbolt was having a similar sound issue...but after root and rom....never lost sound again.
Don't know if that this will help.....but it is an option.
If that doesn't work....you can unroot it an set it back to stock....and get that replacement.

So has your problem been solved after the motherboard replacement. Coz I am having the same problem. So shall I ask samsung for motherboard replacement?
My phone was working without incident for 4 weeks, and then fail.. no sound.. after reading this forum (awesome) I installed and then uninstalled the 'wired...' app and bam phone is working again - thou will be still heading into shop tomorrow for an exchange of handset..
Not sure what my other options were? I had tried absolutely everything else as far as troubleshooting etc.
An update on my phone, I took it back to the point of sale and luckily for me the problem was happening and the staff in store were able to see it/reproduce it including tapping the back of the phone to make it work.
This was 2 weeks ago. It was shipped off the day I took it in and I still haven't heard anything back from Samsung.. hoping to see my phone again this week.
