I just pulled out my Sim card while the phone was on, then pushed it back in & let me tell you, my 4G signal is now strong, blue, and steady AND my gps lag is gone! You're probably wondering how I managed to do this, given the crowded / awkward configuration of the sd, sim, & battery. Well here's how 1st go into settings-storage-unmount sd card. 2nd pull off the back & slide out the sd card, then, without removing the battery slide the sim card out. Now it's not going to come all the way out. It's only going to come out about 1/32nd of an inch but it's just enough to disconnect it from the phone. So once that's done, & you see the red no signal icon in your notification bar, then put the sim back in, then put the sd back in, then reboot :)

Why does this have to be done while the phone is on?

Not exactly sure, but but there is a difference. Just like when a phone freezes up or is misbehaving, you can do either a "soft reset" (powering the phone down, then powering on) or a "hard reset" (take off the back & pull the battery while phone is on) I applied the same theory to the sim card & it worked, where as pulling the sim after I had shut off the phone & removed the battery did not.

The first is generally called a reboot (power off/power on).

A soft reset is generally what is called holding down the volume up/volume down/power buttons until a menu appears and then disappears. This is identical to a battery pull followed by a power on.

Many people call a Factory Data Reset a "hard reset".

You're right. Anyhoo, sim pull fixed my data drops ;-)

The Verizon page at ... SIM Card - Inserting / Removing - DROID BIONIC by Motorola ... says ...
caution.gif
Do not attempt to insert or remove the SIM card with the battery still installed in the device. Doing so can harm the SIM card and / or the device.

While this might just be a legal CYA statement for voiding a warranty you might want to consider it.

Well Thom..... On one hand you have Verizon's 'speculation/disclaimer' and on the other you have what Bowslayer & I have tried, tested, & proven to work. With no damage to the sim or the phone. ;-)
