Sound Quality on Verizon GS3 vs. Iphone 4s

Hi guys as an audio geek I was wondering if there are any good eq apps besides equalizer that can help the audio quality. It sounds very flat for me. What do you guys think of the audio quality via headphones vs. the iphone 4s. To me the iphone was much richer, but I heard some people say that can be alleviated with some apps. Any tips? Or is it just something I will have to get used to?

The sound quality is good on the S3. I've never used an iphone though, so no comparison there. My only real comparison are my Zune 80 and Zune HD, both of which blow away the audio on the S3 with a headset.

My son has a Zune and agreed sounds fine, but kind of splitting hairs, since there is diminished return when you compare the Zune, iPod 4 and SG3. The key for me is the addtional gain and volume the GS3 provides over the iPod 4.

Some of our friends across the Atlantic can better articulate the law, but personal audio devices can only be a certain volume and are capped. This becomes a problem, depending on how the gain and volume curves correlate. Weak gain = weak output with poor depth & definition. Neither GS3 model has weak gain, but the S4 version is louder.

Archos devices are the most infamous for following the volume cap law and having AWFUL gain with poor depth and definition.

I'm using headphones with aptX which is a lossless bluetooth format which iOs devices don't support. The S3 and the HTC One X are the first. I just bought some Creative Labs WP-350 headphones and they sound outsanding. not only are they just really good sounding headphones, but the aptX makes them equivalent to wired. Of course you're at the mercy of the dacs and amps in the recieving device.

One review displayed the signal results and my ears with my Klipsch S4 buds concur. Need to find the review. It was as detailed as the Anandtech review.

Are you talking about the signature of the dac? If so, i can guarantee you there is more to what makes something sound better vs a spectrum graph. Many headphones have similar curves and sound completely different a DAC would be no different.

What were you concurring with? You have both DACs? Also, not for nothing but klipsch s4's aren't the best IEMs and frankly are more along the lines of bass monsters. Not the best type of IEM/headphone to test two Dacs with. JMHO.

I've not heard the zune myself but comparing the s3 to a cowon a2, the cowon isn't leaps and bounds better. I woudn't imagine the zune being better than the a2.

Out of curiousity, how did you come to this conclusion? Did you listen to your zune for x amount of minutes and then go to your s3? If you did, thats a horrible way to A/B two products. Your ears are going to be so used to the Zune that jumping to another device will sound weird. I gaurantee if you listened to the s3 for prolonged periods and then jumped to the zune you might be surprised.

Granted, everyone's ears are different but if you didn't do the above, its not a fair indication to say the zune destroys the s3.

I stick with the premise as long as the components used minimize noise, have an efficient gain/volume curve and a non biased signal output, people are splitting hairs on results. At the point of good balance of sound attributes, it is a diminished return comparing one device to another. Factor in the subjectivity of what buds you use, ear canal pressure (ear health at point of use, elevation, etc) and it is then a case of "who is kidding who". ;)

Simply put for me: Sound attributes of GS3=iPod4=Zune I prefer the GS3 due to a little better gain following nicely along with volume. I have all three devices, BTW.

I prefer the GS3, as well. I think it handles treble a bit better and has overall better midbass and possible bass response and accuracy. This is compared against an A2, which is/was an industry standard in sound for a PMP/DAP.

Using as a source: Vsonic Gr07 - very highly regarded IEM for accuracy (unfortunately no amp combo).

The N900 from Nokia is another great sounding device. Has a built in line amp and sweet sound. Shame the OS sucked for everyone but hackers, awful smartphone function and the absolute WORST call, data and wifi radio reception of a device I ever tested. IT SUCKED REAL BAD. I had to go back to my G1, it was so bad.

Bleh, I spit on you, Nokia and your N900 as well as your pi$$ poor support. Rant over.

I switched from iphone 3s to sumsung s3 and VERY disepointed with sound over headphones... speaker on sg3 sounds better than iphone....

Get yourself a good pair of iem and you'll eventually enjoy GS3 more. :)

My case, dual BA TDK BA200 iem, great SQ and Soundstage.
Its a fully sealed iem, the one that "I don't hear you you dont hear me type".

If you're bass head and doesn't matter about SQ and Soundstage, look elsewhere like Beat Audio iem or headphones.
