Impressions of G3

Aside from the $148 walmart price, I saw radio shack had the s3 for $149 along with several online stores selling them for $150? Surely the $200 for the s3 is not a factor...

No one has clarified...but these prices are WITH a new contract. I am ineligible for an upgrade so I had to pay $479 on EBAY for a 16GB Sprint Galaxy S3. Both Sprint and Best Buy wanted $599 for the phone without upgrade.

WITH a contract and WITHOUT are two totally different prices.

;)

If out were $50 I would, but I'm with AT&T and the store I was at Saturday wouldn't price match. I do plan on trying another store.

Didn't know that about the battery on the one x, though. That's another strike against it.

You don't have a Walmart or Best Buy near you?

You are correct, however since other OP started the thread with the $200/$99 price comparison in replying to him it was a safe assumption he wasn't speaking of the non contract price and didn't require clarification... And those prices are for upgrades as well.

I currently have a Galaxy S, and am thinking about upgrading. I THINK I want the S3, but don't really want to spend $200. I almost got a HTC One X today, but was dissuaded by the lack of a memory card slot.

So, for those of you who have the S3, is it worth twice the HTC? I'm hoping that the GPS bugs and things form the original are worked out.

I recently had gotten the Galaxy S and had it for about 10 days before I went back and got the S3. I actually did like the S but I kept thinking about that S3 out there and I just couldn't let my 15 day remorse period expire. I am absolutely glad I went back and got it. Even though, as I stated, I really liked the S, the S3 was definitely worth it for me. Whether it's worth that extra money to you would be hard to say but I love the bigger size and newer OS.

I'm in the 6 month period between when my contact actually expires but AT&T will let me upgrade. Can I go through Best Buy? I know I couldn't go through Radio Shack last time.

You either qualify for an upgrade or you don't. Sounds like you already checked and they told you that you do, so YES.

You don't have to complete your contract, you just need to be eligible for an upgrade. Not sure what radio shack's problem was. AT&T, Amazon, Best Buy, and Car Toys wouldn't have an issue.. I've upgraded through each in the "6 month period" you speak of - which is when you qualify heh.

Ok, great. If that works then I'm in business. I'm actually seeing the S3 for $99 through Amazon wireless for Sprint. If BB will match that that for an AT&T phone I'm in business.

I don't know why Radio Shack told me that they couldn't upgrade me last time I was elgible. They specifically told me I had to go through AT&T, so I assumed that was the case for me today. Fourtunatly AT&T DID price match back then so I didn't have this hassle.

Don't think they will PM Amazon esp on a diff carrier but doesn't hurt to try :)

Yeah, I'll have to check. If they don't match across carriers then I'm back to square one. I haven't found anyplace that has the AT&T phone for much less than $199.

As stated earlier, they WILL match that price.

Have you tried your carrier's online sales chat?

Talk to them, state that you are shopping for the S3 on all the carriers and comparing costs against pre-paid. After they tell you the price, tell them that you'll sign a new contract if you can get an S3 for $0. Make sure you're clear on its the 32GB version you want.

If the first rep doesn't work with you, try another. When you do find a rep who will give you what you want, capture the chat and save it for future reference: either take it to a store and get that deal in person or keep it for later to ensure you aren't billed for it.

The first rep I talked to was willing to waive the device cost (and I got two of them) and I took it to the store and they honoured it (I used Evernote on my phone to show them). I was a new customer to them but whether 18- or 24-mo., a contract is long-term income for them and one customer they'll keep. They want you to upgrade 6 mos. prior so you don't go shopping elsewhere. Everything is negotiable.

Don't get distracted with how great their network is, etc., just deflect it with the assertion that all networks work fine for you, everything else is just academic and not worth the cost to you.

I assume that's from Wal-mart, but around here and online it's showing as 198. Maybe that's a regional price? Best Buy said they will only match retail locations within the city.
Wierd. Originally I read about it on a post from someone on the east coast. Checked my local Walmart and they had the same price. Read a bunch of posts of ppl in CA getting them for that price as well. Bummer your store is higher.

Amazon price back up to $189 :(

Try retentions @ at&t, wait for a deal, or get the HOX for $99...

I personally loveee my GS3 and have no issues with it currently, but I've been reading an article that S3 users have been facing some problems with the phone. Not sure which one but you should do your research before buying. But like I said, I dont have ANY problems. YET.

Of course there are some problems......do we expect a cutting-edge device that has sold 10s of millions of copies to be absolutely perfect?

I love my GS3 too and don't have many (any) real complaints.

Okay, I flopped around before I made my choice. I ate $60 on sprint just to find I liked the S3 a lot more. Overall? The whole thing is a LOT smoother. The One X line literally struggled to be competitive with my Evo 3D, which I was 'upgrading' from.

This is all 'pre-patch' that was supposed to address the multi tasking issue that was present, but it was god awful. Rooting helped somewhat, but it was certainly a downgrade in overall speed from the 3D. I mean, the GPU was stronger, nicer camera, more metal construction, but there's a few things I hated.

One X:
The speaker is horrible compared to my 3D (which also sucked horribly)
The Multi-Tasking issues made the phone un-load things like the launcher, keyboard, and anything you need to use within 45 seconds (timed) of leaving an app.
The battery doesn't last as long as the S3.

S3:
The screen (opinion) isn't up to par with the One X. I'd much rather the One X LCD for overall use. Outside, the S3 is rather difficult to see in direct sunlight (issue for me).
The camera isn't near as nice as the One X. All being said though, it's better than everything else I've seen on the market, just not as nice as the One X.
The phone is totally plastic, and as a result dents very easily. 2 slow slides off my bed (not 2 feet off bubour carpet) have left 2 deep dents in the bezel.

Overall, I'd say take the S3 any day. However, the software fixes might have made the multi tasking problem much less prominent and more smimlar to the experience I had on the 3D (above average).

For a better feeling, most likely more durable phone, I would have to give it to the One X hands down. Much more of a premium built device. Stability and speed are on the S3 though. I didn't think the extra gigabyte of RAM would have as much an impact as it does. Sure, I'm never much over 1.17gb used, but that extra let's me play games in my N64 emulator that I could only dream of on any other phone (majoras mask, as a big one).

If anyone wants a clearer comparison, just post. I'm in my car right now, typing away on my phone. I'll be back in the barracks here shortly.
