Root Big newbie. I want to root my phone to atempt to fix a defect.

Do you know what system version your on? Go in settings then press about phone and see what your system version is then we can point you in the right direction. For now you can try wiping your cache partition in stock recovery to see if it helps any. To do that just power off your phone then press and hold in your home button followed by pressing in your power button. Continue holding in both buttons till you see a triangle on the screen then release the buttons. Next press in both volume buttons at the same time that will get you a menu. Scroll with your volume button to where it says wipe cache partition and select it with your power button. Once the cache wipe is complete just select reboot system. Im assuming your on gingerbread so those directions are for getting in stock recovery for gingerbread.

are you sure it isnt a problem caused by an app you have installed? over the past two years with the DX i have had two situations where my phone would for now reason apparent reason start pulling crap on my similar to your problem. I had been using an app which helps you turn in wifi signal strength and shortly after running that app my phone would go nutz. Finally dawned on me the relationship between the event ad app, ditched the app and life is good again.
