Student Tablet Advice

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place/repetition, My laptop is slowly dying so need to get a replacement, but as I do basically all my work on uni computers I'm quite keen on the idea of getting a tablet like the transformer prime, mostly because of size and battery life for taking to uni/on the train (does it actually get 18 hours?), should I hold out for something like the windows 8 version (hope that isn't a dirty word on here haha) or just go ahead and get that or a different android maybe? will a tablet even be enough as a replacement for my laptop? (I probably need to spend less time on it anyway)

Since you mentioned the Prime, you may want to consider the successor to it: the Infinity (TF700T). I think it can act as a laptop replacement depending on your needs. Most high-end tablets will have the processing power you need; you just need to figure out if the available productivity apps are sufficient for your needs.

I just got the Transformer Infinity with the dock. I love it. It acts as my travel laptop replacement. I use it mainly for media and web consumption.

Nothing on android compares to Microsoft Office or even comes close.

A laptop for the price of the Transformer Prime will be much more capable so if your a student it doesn't make much sense to get a tablet imo.

Also for the price of the Prime you could get the Nexus 7 tablet and a cheap laptop.

No tablet can act as a real laptop replacement really. At best they are just media consumption devices, not real productivity devices. Maybe it would be better if you tell us what you actually intent to do with it, so we can give you better advice. I have a number of classmates who used to rely on tablets in class, after a couple of months or so they began bringing their laptops again.

I think you'd be better off using a laptop/netbook. Tablets are nice for media and entertainment, but productivity, they are limited. What I mean by limited is, storage space/removable storage and apps in the market. If you could find a good office app like, Documents To Go or Quickoffice Pro, they should work for your basic word, excel, power point and PDF creation/reading. If you go with the tablet, get a good stand and keyboard. My son has a Coby tablet and even though he has a case/stand, he has to place it down to type.

Yeah, in the coming months only the ASUS 810 and MS Surface Pro will be the only actually tablets usable for actual productivity.

I Just bought a Samsung series 7 slate and so far love it. I wanted to wait for Windows 8 tabs but I needed it for classes starting next week.

I think with One note my electrical engineering notes will look much nicer.
I Love Android but for what I needed I couldn't find an easy solution.
