iphone 5 vs Galaxy S3?

The GS3 had it's fair share of outlandish rumors, too. 3D screen, waterproof, etc.

Now that it has been released, we don't need to wade through all of those rumours. I'm waiting for the same with the next iPhone when it is released. Only then well we have an acurate picture of the capabilities of both phones in which to do a proper comparison.

Nope. I was contemplating waiting for the iPhone 5 or to just get the Samsung Galaxy SIII but I ended up getting the S3. iPhones are going out, only true Apple hypes are sticking with the phones because it's an Apple product. Since Steve Job's death and leave from the company, Apple doesn't seem to be putting out quality stuff as once before.

The new iPhone is said to have lots of changes such as the charging port and the newer design because of a bigger screen. The new iPhone is assumed to have 4G LTE but who knows. Apple is stubborn and only adds things only if enough people complain and whine for the extras.

I went with Android (Galaxy S3) because:
-4G LTE now
-Bigger screen size
-External memory as an option
-Google is a much more relaxed company than Apple
-Android has a larger community than iOS devices do
-Customization for Android phones
-Rooting allows more and Google is more understanding of consumers rooting than Apple is of people jailbreaking
-Warranty and replacement if phone is lost/stolen

I would like an iPhone for a few reasons which don't seem to be much compared to the advantages of Android
-better compatibility with apps and accessories due to less models of iOS devices
-Hype and steady value over time
-Apple taking control of repairs instead of Asurion/Sprint/Samsung/etc.
-More apps and more exclusive apps as well as the Apple App Store, typically, getting apps first

Other than those...Android seems to be the best. And this Samsung Galaxy SIII has been one of my favorite phones to hold.

Thank you, finally a post that doesn't talk about "fanbois" and just trash talk. There are enthusiasts from both sides.

I got my S3 a week ago coming from a 4S and before that Droid Eris.

There are pros and cons to both sides and it really depends on the user. A poll I saw said 49% of people care for 4G LTE right now. So 4G may not be a big deal for many. It will be coming for ip5 anyway.

There are things that I miss from the 4s. I used it as my music player and use iTunes for syncing, rating etc and isyncr has been giving me errors (the samsung MTP drivers especially). I feel like android always has one or two more button presses required to do a task and that's fine with me, but my GF hates it. Simple tasks aren't always so simple with Android.

I do LOVE the customization options with ICS though. I spend more time customizing than using the phone as a smartphone. I will say I've always been a bit annoyed about how Android does their software updates. My Eris was stuck on Eclair or whatever until I rooted it to Froyo and then Gingerbread myself and even then that was annoying having to reflash to update bugs etc to be on the latest OS while when Apple releases, it's all available... you just have to wait for a jail break.

Someone did make a valid point on the 4S holding it's value. Verizon SIM unlocked my phone for international GSM use and I sold it for $450 16gb. And turned around and scoured eBay until I found a listing for $450 and bought it. Basically got a straight trade for a 2 week old S3.

Also Applecare+ is huge for me. It's super nice just going into an Apple Retail store to get something fixed up.

Okay anyway, google maps is the best in the business right now and I am interested to see Apple's maps implementation but S3 definitely has it beat there. The 4" screen seems underwelming, but if it's like the 4S, the panel is extremely nice. I kind of like the 16:9 ratio and the fact I am 99% locked to portrait mode this would be beneficial to users like me. But I am loving the S3 screen, except outside, wow it sucks.

The 4S still has the best camera, probably tied with S3 IMO so I imagine the 5 will have an even better camera.

K done rambling. I agree with pretty much most of your points.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the iPhone consists of Samsung parts, Sony screens, the only thing apple could be the a5.....

Still, in terms of better, usability, battery, etc
The rumours seem to be 2-500mah larger battery..... not so much if it is going to sport a larger "brighter/hd" screen. And utilize lte/4g data. As mentioned before, patience of a saint if your going to theme aos. Camera... I'll admit, they have always had a good camera on their phones and the software for videos, well pixar uses it if I'm not mistaken (gotta count for somethIng, rIght?). Other then that, drink the koolaid in a robe same old thing imo.

Edit; to set my confusing words, I NEVER intended for it to come across as apple being a better product. I had a 3gs. I sold my esteem to get my sgs3. And denied people everyday who wanted to trade their superior 4s for a metro phone :p NO!

No it will not be better because it is coming from the closed minds at Apple. Will I be able to connect the iphone 5 to my PC and drop and drag files to and from it like it was a flash drive? Will I be able to do anything to do with videos, pictures and movies without going through itunes? Will it have a standard micro-USB port on it? Will I be able to expand the memory with a $15 32GB micro SD card?

I have been a tech geek since the late 70's and I have yet to spend a single penny on an Apple product. I would gladly buy something from them if they made products for people like me, but they don't. Plain and simple.

Sometimes, comparing phones is almost like comparing cars. Is the Ford F150 a better truck or the Chevy Silverado a better truck? Each camp will come up with tons of reasons to support their favorite trucks. But in fact they both have their pros and cons, and both can do the job.

At the end of the day, people who love iPhones will buy the iPhones, and people who like Android will buy Android phones. That is what democracy is...the freedom of choice. :)

New iPhone honestly will be a better phone than before bigger screen and all but it seems to me android comes out with what apple says is new 6 months ahead of them so I says no.

So true. In fact for a lot of things it's even before 6 months. Apple rarely has anything 'new' on their phones. Maybe one feature that other phones don't, but then the 4 or 5 other 'new' features are generally somethign that android or blackberry have been doing for years. But spend so much on advertising, putting you down for not having the latest, greatest Apple product, that enough fanbois rush out at the first available chance to get one.

there two sides to every coin.

If you like customizations and things like that, simply go with andriod. it is customizable out of the box so to speak.

If you like just picking up a phone and using it or are simply too lazy to keep with the what you can do with your phone, how to mod it, what apps to get to make your phone run betters etc.... iPhone is the better option.

otherwise, I really think it's personal preference.

Unless Apple's lawyers have their say, in which case everything since the beginning of time was invented by Apple.....and therefore nobody should be allowed to sell any competing products of any kind because they are infringing on Apple's all-powerful design.

Most if not all of the leaks regarding the new iphone may be misleading and Apple could very well be the source of those leaks. Remember the S3? Nobody knew what to expect in terms of design. With that in mind nobody besides the top Apple dogs know what the next iphone might look like. TBH holding a Note to your ear looks like holding a brick...without adding a case! With an otterbox or a ballistic the S3 is simply too huge and heavy. What I don't get is...if people have a PC, laptop, mac, whatever and own a tablet...why would you want a huge phone? There's many arguments on both sides.

Coming from the iPhone 4s I can say it was easy for me to get used to the 4.8" screen. Took about a week. Now I enjoy watching Netflix more. I enjoy browsing the web a LOT more, I enjoy reading more. I enjoy playing games more.

People that think smartphones (that do 234234652 different things) should be small are completely missing the point of having a smartphone. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the Nokia 6230 when I had it and the Sony Ericsson t280 phone i had. All those little phones were GREAT and had awesome battery life and were great for calling and texting! But that's all they were great at. Browsing the web sucked. You couldn't watch streaming video. Reading was a HUGE pain. Looking at pictures made you squint, etc etc etc.

If you enjoy the 3.5" form factor, that's fine. Great for you. But don't for a second think that that size is idea for the multimedia devices we carry around with us all day long now. It's not. I don't know what the perfect size is. Obviously there is an upper limit that we shouldn't pass when using it as a phone (when you want to use the phone and not just bluetooth). Obviously 7" would be too much. The note may be too much for some people with smaller hands and are in general just smaller so it looks like a tea cup plate is next to their head. But the SGS3 is not too big as a smart phone and has made all the other aspects of using it MORE enjoyable than when I had my iphone 4s.

When the new iphone gets a 4" screen that will be the best upgrade it gets bar none, regardless of how much ram, what cpu/gpu, etc it gets.

By never buying an apple product you are only communicating that your opinion isn't well supported and shouldn't be taken seriously by most people that are making a decision between the two.

Go buy an iphone, use it for MANY months, and then come back to android. Only then will you be able to appreciate the things that iOS does BETTER than android (always smooth, higher quality apps, infinitely better stability, much better materials used, etc) and then be able to truly appreciate what android does BETTER than iOS (widgets, transfer of music/files, hardware options, ROMS, customizations, etc).

But until you actually give the other side a fair shake, the term "fanboy" will always be appropriate. "fanboy" doesn't mean you are blind to the other side. I'm sure you have researched apple and its products a lot. But you are still a "fanboy" because your pride keeps you from ever giving an apple product a shot.

The one thing though that sucks about the GS3 is gosh awful power drain in weak signal areas. The GS3 has a definite split personality. Amazing battery life and cool running in medium to good signal areas, but runs hot and drains battery quick in weak signal areas. This assumes you are more than a light user of data.

This need fixing and does the same thing with both stock roms. White 32GB and the blue version have the same issue.

I'm glad you know what goes on in my mind so well. I might not have ever spent a penny on an Apple product, but I have spent a lot of time using them - mostly products owned by friends, room mates and girl friends over the years. From Apple II, Apple IIGS, Mac, color Mac, iMac, Macbook, PowerPC Mac, Intel Mac, to the iphone 3, iphone 4 and the ipods and ipads; I have tried them all. I even spent significant time on an Apple Lisa in college when my room mate had one and my Atari 800 had been stolen (out of the same room the Lisa was in). I have seen the benefits of the Apple products, but also the detractors. I would never buy a product that is not expandable, connectable or locks me into one controlling way of doing things. Apple usually has good quality hardware, but they always do something that makes me as a power user not want them. For that reason, I have chosen not to spend my money there. I am not a fan of Microsoft or Google either for many reasons. My choices always come down to lesser of evils!

When I bought my first Android I came really close to buying an iphone instead. They were sold out in the store I was in or I would have bought it on the spot. I went home and did a little research and found out that I couldn't connect iphones to my PC without effen itunes and all of the other Big Brother controlling BS that Apple loves to pull. Buying the iphone would have been an impulse decision and I am glad that I got the extra time to do a little research because I would not have been happy. I decided to go with Android since their OS had shown signs of significant improvement from when I had looked at them previously. The way I use my phones, Android was the right decision. If I was buying a phone for my girlfriend or mother, I might actually buy an iphone.

Sorry, but if these conscious, thought out decisions make me a fan boy then I guess I am.

I agree with this 100%. I notice it because at work, i'm behind like 3 walls plus where my phone charges is tucked away in a metal cabinet, so it gets hot and drains. So i just keep it plugged in all day.

Once i leave the building, it's fine. At home i have full bars of 4g and use it as our home internet (mobile hotspot) and it runs great and has EXCELLENT battery.

I guess i prefer it how it is compared to the reverse. that would really suck! I'll take amazing 4g battery life over 3g any day. But if they could fix it, that would be nice :)

2 Things:

1) You don't have to hook up to your pc to sync or update anymore with apple, it's OTA.

2) Yes, even though you used your friends products and have made "conscious, thought out decisions," you are still a fanboy. But now that you know that, you can change it. Or you can keep be a fanboy. But at least you know what you are instead of thinking you can judge both sides fairly.

Trying things out is nice and gives you a little info. But until you OWN something and have to use it daily and nightly all the time and everywhere, you can't really judge a product.

That's like saying you KNOW a woman because you slept with her. No, until you make a covenant before God and man in marriage and live with her every day and every night......you don't know her, you just slept with her.

You don't know Apple, you just slept with.....him :) (hey, Steve Jobs was the person most closely associate with Apple until recently and even now it's a dude so...... :))

If you know how a phone's radio works, you will realize, that there is not a single phone on earth that does not drain battery faster where coverage is weak.

Here is how it works:

The phone adjusts the radios power depending on signal strength. The stronger the signal, the less power is sent to the radio as it does not have to work at full power. In weaker coverage areas, the phone has to send loads of juice to the radio as it needs to query the towers more often and with more power and that uses more power and makes the phone heat up. Dead simple.

If iPhone works in a different way, it must have been made by some extraterrestrial beings as human being on earth have not been able to make a different working phone so far.

If they can not fix it, at least give an option that if the signal quality is weak, the device automatically throttles down power consumption of data and wifi is activated.

Such user controlled options would be nice.

I know this, but that is a relative convention and depends on the device on how bad the drain is. The chips can throttle down step consumption of power if the radio is beating itself to death to obtain signal. Just needs to be programmed as such.

This is my seventh Android phone (third 4g) and has the best battery life for 3g/4g with decent signal, but worst in weak signal areas.

Added: Exception being the RAZR. 4g drain was worse, even if had a great signal. 3g was good.

How many phones from before the Razr had 4G exactly? See my point?
