Root Scottys noob friendly root guide-start to finish

C:\Users\Georg>cd c:\mini-adb_vigor

c:\mini-adb_vigor>fastboot boot recovery-ra-vigor-3.14-gnm.img
< waiting for device >
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.393s]
booting...
OKAY [ 0.004s]
finished. total time: 1.405s

So I got to this part and the phone reboots and hangs at the HTC white screen.

looks like that should work,im not sure why its not booting, unless you have a bad image for the recovery. you might try re downloading it. you might also try different usb cables and ports, and make sure theres nothing running on the pc that can interact with the phone.

you can try permantly flashing the recovery again, and see if that lets you boot to it. if that works, then try the fastboot boot command again

if all else fails,it may be time to relock and run the ruu,per the "full ruu" method in post 2 :(

Hi Scotty (or anyone who knows), I used your method to root my Rezound back in March. It worked great. I had that phone replaced a few months ago because of a hardware issue and I never rooted the replacement because I decided to wait for OTA ICS before I did anything. Now I that I have ICS I was wondering if the process is the same to root? Are the downloads all the same? Thanks.

yes,the process is the same. all downloads are the same, except use the superuse for ICS,not GB. both are listed i the OP,use this for ICS: [16.07.2012] SuperSU v0.94 - xda-developers

Thanks again for your assistance. I just finished rooting. Everything worked fine except one snag. I tried to root with the newest recovery image 3.15, 3 times and it did not work. For some reason there wasn't the option to flash the zip file so I couldn't install superuser. I tried again with the older 3.14 recovery file and and it worked perfect.

My wife's phone kept getting the OTA even though we elected to defer the update and, kept going to the "red triangle of death" - as someone had called it ;) So finally, last night I decided to download the OTA on my own phone to see what the problem was.

Both our phones were S-on, unlocked, rooted and running the stock GB ROMS. I had moved some of the bloatware out of /system/app into /system/app.bak to make it invisible (as I didn't have the paid version of Titanium Backup). It turns out that the missing apps from /system/app were causing the OTA to fail. So, I moved all the apps back from /system/app.bak to /system/app and tried the OTA and it went through just fine.

Here is my experience/advice
(i) Bring all apps back, if you've removed/frozen them
(ii) Save existing nandroid/Titanium Backup files off the phone's internal memory/SD to your PC's hard drive (in case things get FUBAR and your SD card gets erased somehow)
(iii) I didn't have to relock or restore the stock recovery. YMMV though as I hadn't flashed a permanent recovery and always did a fastboot into temporary recovery
(iv) The OTA came in as 2 separate updates - 7.1MB followed by ~300MB
(v) After OTA updated successfully, I went into temporary recovery using AmonRa's 3.15 and it didn't seem to work. I got the "tampered" warning. I tried the same recovery again and this time it worked just fine. At this point, I made a full Nandroid of my phone which was now running ICS
(vi) Last remaining step for me is to put the SU app back from the XDA site that Scotty85 has pointed to and then move all the newly updated bloatware back into /system/app.bak

Hope this helps someone who is in the same boat as we were and once again thanks to Scotty85 for helping us all through the rooting process. I had followed his guide when I rooted my Incredible and it had gone extremely smoothly then as well.

Cheers

Scotty, quick and probably stupid question: but how do I know IF I'm currently on STOCK ROM or not?

I rooted from scratch after installing the ICS update and followed this guide by installing amon 3.15 recovery image (temp method) + SuperSU.

Is this considered STOCK ROM (or custom)?

I'm no Scotty, but if you didn't flash a rom you're still on the stock rom or at least the same rom you were on before you rooted which was the stock ota it sounds like.

Yes you are on a stock rom, but you are no longer "stock" since you rooted and have a custom recovery.

any luck

So after I relocked, I tried to
RUU_Vigor_VERIZON_WWE_1.00.605.3_Radio_RS_0.93.00.0914r_3161C1_9K_NV_8k_1.12_9k_1.83_V_APT_release_216261_signed and keep getting your battery is below 30% everytime I try it. I just took the batteries out of the external charger.

When I try permanently install your recovery, I get to the fastboot flash recovery <recoveryname>.img; the phone restarts to blank white HTC page. And yes I redownloaded everything again.

I was able to unlock again.

I'd be happy to get my phone back to stock, so that I could just use it again.

ive found most folks who are having prollems despite everything looking correct, are having something running on the PC thats interfereing. some have only been able to overcome the issue by using a "virgin" pc or laptop thats never had any phone stuff installed on it.

make sure youve disabled htc sync, pdanet, easy tether, and any other program capable of comunicating with the phone.

also try different cables and ports. if all else fails, put mini-adb_vigor on a flash drive and take it to a friends house and try a different PC

on the batteries, are you sure your external charger is working properly?

you also will not be able to install that ruu, unless youre still on that old firmware  youll need to use the ruu for the current build- 2.01.605.11

2.01.605.11 didn't work. Got the message saying try a different version. I got tired and gave the phone to someone to try to fix. I will let you know when he is done.

the roms youve flashed installed kernels that have changed your main version.if you had followed the directions in post 2,the main version tool would have reset your main version so that the ruu would have worked.

you can direct whomever is fixing your phone to that post,or have them run the latest ruu as athiestrev suggested.

I originally rooted on Gingerbread but kept stock recovery so I could get the ICS OTA. I followed your steps again to re-root after the OTA using the downloads I already had. Now I'm looking more closely and I notice that you recommend SuperSU for ICS, and I'm still running Superuser (now 3.1.3). Is there any reason to uninstall Superuser and switch to SuperSU? The only "root" thing I have trouble with is tethering, but I haven't tried very hard to get it working. If it's needed, what's the best way to uninstall Superuser?

if the superuser you have is granting permissions to things, and they are working, then id say that you dont really need to update it. im not suposed to talk about tethering as a guide, but the apps that work do need to be set correctly, even after root permisions are obtained,so double check that.

if superuser is not really working,or you just want to update, all you need to do is downlaod and flash the new. it will replace the current files,no need to try and remove them first :)

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but at this point while using image v3.15

md5sums
recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img

**make sure the resulting md5 matches the one that drellisdee lists for the image that you downloaded. **

the md5 I get is 9d127cde10b68de5e424aaea2d4a4357 while it seems drellisdee is md5sum b0f721584e2d42aff37df1ebac9439fd recovery-ra-vigor-3.15-gnm.img.zip

shouldn't mine be the same?
