looks like the SynergyROM guys have figured out why the current way of backing up your IMEI has not been working exactly as planned...and they have cooked a new automated backup process into tonight's nightly...its very possible this will find its way into AOSP ROMs, or at least something likely...which is where the problem is prevalent

xda-developers - View Single Post - ☆ ★ | ROM | SynergyROM VZW S3 | ICS 4.0.4 | Fully Optimized | NIGHTLIES |★ ☆

edit: someone in the #verizons3 channel deliberately trashed their IMEI to test it and it worked

So if I'm on stock would I have to flash synergy to backup or is there another way?

Geesh, there's several ways it seems:

[HOWTO]Comprehensive IMEI/EFS Backup - xda-developers
[HOW-TO][FIX] Repair your IMEI with QPST - updated w/ info - xda-developers
How-to: Backup and restore your IMEI / MEID / EFS Data - xda-developers

I never lost mine (the one time I flashed CM10), so I have no idea how effective the backups are. (i did the one in the last link that uses adb, evidently not recommended anymore)

You'd want to do one of these before flashing a ROM (prob the first link?).

the top option is the new "complete" backup that the Synergy devs figured out
