Aussie mate in "I think I've killed my phone" hell

Afternoon all,

A mate of mine in Australia asked me how to root his SG2S so I pointed him in the direction of CNet's excellent video guide. He followed the video to the letter (pixel?), downloading all the right gear before he started. He even downloaded the kernel that was closest to the one he had in his phone already. Everything went fine, he got all the green lights from Odin without any error messages.

However, in rebooting he got as far as the startup screen with the yellow triangle and the phone just hung there. After an hour he pulled the battery and now the phone only boots as far as the initial screen and then just freezes. Any hints / tips / ideas? It sounds to me like the root didn't take effect properly and something's missing, but beyond that I'm a bit stuck.

The phone's details are as follows:

Model= GT-I9100
SSN = I9100GSMH
Kernel = GT-I9100_XWKL1_

He says he can start it in download mode, if that helps.

Cheers guys,
Hobbit.

Are you sure that your friend hasn't got the, "G", variant SGSII. Lots of people with, "G", variants have come a cropper using that CNET video.

I'm guessing you didn't like our very own, "Rooting Galaxy S2 - A Dummies Guide". ;)

EDIT It does look as though your friend has the GT-i9100 version after all.

Have they flashed, say, an ICS root kernel to Gingerbread software... or visa versa?

LOL! Ashamed to say the rooting guide didn't cross my mind. I just told him what I did. I'll point him in the direction of the guide now (although this may be adding insult to injury in a "this is what you could have won" type way).

I'll ask him which OS he was running. If he has flashed an ICS kernel onto GB, has he irretrievably fritzed it?

Apparently he was using ICS so I think he's safe there.

So he should now try to do the whole process again using the original firmware from SamMobile via Odin? Worth a punt?

That's odd... he looks as though he has a Gingerbread, (KL1), kernel installed! :thinking:

He should try rooting it using a CF-Root kernel that matches his original one as per the instructions under the heading, "The Root Kernel", in post #1 of the, "Dummies Guide".

The problems he's experiencing are consistent with using the wrong CF-Root kernel.

It might pay him to flash his original firmware from SamMobile and start again... slowly and carefully.

(If this is the CNET guide you are referring to, they are using the very old KE1 root kernel)
