Root Still waffling on ROMing

Still on the fence about this, reading multiple threads on multiple sites on different ROM's. Trying to decide what benefits it would give me. Don't get me wrong there's a definite "cool factor". I'm just of the mind that stock JB is pretty cool too :)

Trying to get as concise a list of ROMS and their distinctive benefits so I can finally get off the fence and either pick one or forget it (for now, LOL).

Post your fave and list of likes/don't likes if you would. What does it have/do that JB doesn't/can't.

Also be nice if you objectively gave me some of the cons for the ROM too.

One final thing, if your fave is already listed rather that post again on it, just "like" the post from that ROM and it will give me an idea without this thread going on to infinity....

Thanks in advance.

Wow! somebody replied, LOL. Thought the thread was dead. :) I've downloaded several from reading other threads and other sites, going to make the jump soon, but looking into custom kernels first, going to try out a couple that support the init.d, ntfs and other tuning options I'm looking for. Still like the stock JB ROM, but just needs some tweaks.

Stock 4.1.1 with a custom kernel is pretty boss, but I recently switched to ParanoidAndroid with _motley's kernel, and I gotta say this thing is slick as snot on a doorknob.. Incredibly lean and fast, and the per-app DPI/mode settings can't be beat :)

What does adjusting dpi do? And what is tablet vs hybrid vs Galaxy Nexus with a 7 inch screen?
I wanted to try out a tablet mod or hybrid ROM, I just don't know the benefits, and I've read about problems with changing dpi.
Someone in a tablet mod thread called the nexus 7 a 7 inch galaxy nexus, and I literally loled. I bought my wife one before I got one and she basically said the same thing.

PA allows you to set tablet mode system-wide and/or on a per-app basis, and allows you to set any of the different modes each app was coded for. Like the phone version of YouTube better than the tablet version? Then run it that way.. Same for every other app, including the internal stuff, like SystemUI and Settings.

I suggest just giving it a try, it's pretty badass

I'm still waiting on a good milestone from the AOKP guys. Not that I doubt that the nightlies are good, I just don't want to have to go through the trouble of setting everything up all over again.

As for adding launchers.... ugh. I use Apex on my GNex and it is awesome. When I try to use it on the N7... wow, it is frustrating. The different in screen real estate becomes apparent and I just can't get it set up the way I want. I do kind of miss landscape mode, though. =(

I am very pleased with how well the N7 runs. Looking for ROMs on a tablet is a little different than on a phone. No messenger, contacts, dialer... The experience for me has been much more relaxing, too, since downtime on my tablet doesn't matter. I NEED to be able to use my phone.

Well that settles it. Most think the stock ROM is good enough. Have tried every custom kernel I could find and think I'm just going to stay stock with that too, none of them give me anything I can really say is definitive for staying with 'em. Might have to pick one with NTFS support, but that would be the main reason for going with it.

Onward ho!

I mean, reasons I unlocked, rooted, and ROMed my phone:
Battery life sucked
Remove Verizon apps
Software updates I can install myself
More things are themable.

None of those apply to the N7. I don't have any reason why I unlocked my N7, but now that it is, I'm going to try some tablet mode mods and hybrid ROMs.

There's plenty of Roms available for our n7s. My question is why they aren't listed in the all things root sub forum. Seems the supers are lagging in organizing all the resources available out there. I love this forum more than any other but the maintenance seems to be a little lacking lately. I have an lg esteem and the family that takes care of that sub is stellar in all regards. Much could be learned there. Not complaining at all just my observation.

Sorry that you feel things are lacking here... as there are so many different sub-forums, it can be a little difficult to keep on top of things. It does say in the ATR sticky to let us know, should any info need adding/changing/removing, so we will get it sorted.

Just going to go and update the sticky now :)

EDIT - updated :D

Well, tried 4 different ROMS, won't say which, just didn't think they gave me the experience of Nexus 7 Stock JB. Do have a custom kernel so I have NTFS and init.d support. Will stay stock ROM though, tired of restoring nandroid (even though it's a piece of cake).

Each one of the ROMS offered some nice things, but nothing I felt was a keeper over stock.

Root and ROM just to play with it. I mean, with a phone I root to increase battery life, get jelly bean before my carrier releases it(Verizon), not have to deal with carrier bloat, tethering, and make it more customizable.
With the nexus 7, the only reason I could see would be to speed it up. I haven't had any lag or ever complained about my n7 being slow. I see posts on every forum saying "my nexus 7 got slow"
I unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery, flashed a custom ROM and kernel, and installed the v6 supercharger right out of the box.
