GS3 Case discussion thread

And you throw your $700 phone every day? I do not and thus I am not worried.

well, then, you arent a part of otterbox's target consumers. accidents happen... :D

Don't know if this has already been posted on here, but to me, this is the coolest looking armor-type case that there is currently. Also comes in a black and an orange version.

iPhone 4S 4 Accessories, iPad Cases, Skins & Covers, iPod Car Kit, Chargers, Headset, iPhone 4 4S Cover, Headphones, Car Mount Holder & Charger

now THAT is a case. i hope they come out with more colors. eyeing the black one though. maybe if i can get it on amazon or somewhere for cheap

I emailed Otterbox about the issue with the Commuter; being hard to press the power button.

A moment ago I received an email from them, they are sending me a new Commuter. So, I wonder if the 'rubber gel' on my current one is just too hard\faulty. They shipped a replacement, without even digging into it further. I wonder if they were already aware of the issue. Interesting...

I haven't read every post, but I did a search on your posts and did not see a response to this. Did you receive the new case, and if so, did it help your problem?

Thanks

Have you attempted to remove the "Shock proof stand case" yet? I have this case (In black) and I found the inner hard plastic case almost impossible to remove. Another forum member had the exact same problem and had to file down one or more of the plastic clips that snap together in order to easily remove it. I tried for several minutes to get it to unsnap starting with my fingernails and ending with a plastic knife before I gave up and handed it off to my wife. She's more patient than I am. It took her a few minutes and she finally was able to remove it. I also found that it's a HUGE case. Between my daughter and I we have about 17 cases for our S3's and it's by far the largest, bulkiest case. It does look tough though and it probably provides excellent impact protection. But considering how ridiculously difficult it is to remove I'll leave mine in the drawer. The other forum member with this case was concerned that having the hard plastic inner case against directly against the phone might cause scratches. I don't know if this will happen or not but it might. I didn't bother to file down the clips. Not worth the effort for me.

Hi Benny,
Sorry, I should have mentioned that. Absolutely, the silicone/hard shell (from my previous post) is a bugger to remove..I keep one edge of the hard shell "unclipped" slightly so I can remove it easily. Nigh-on impossible to get off if it's totally clasped together.

The Maya II Proporta pouch is a bit too tight (!!) with the hard/silicone case on, so I got this Joystick Junkies' DSi case from Poundland (UK):

Cut off a plastic corner-tab at the right-hand side as the S3 is little too bulky to fit properly with the silicone cover; fits great now. It even has little slots for styluses and a magnetic clip at the clasp (quite a strong hold, too). Pretty cool for

I just got my otterbox, and I hate this thing. The buttons are terrible, case sticks out so much that it's uncomfortable pressing the home button, and I didn't realize how annoying it is that there is a cover over the charging dock. Probably protects the phone very well, but not worth it. Ruins the look and feel of the phone. Can someone recommend something slimmer with cutouts for the power/volume/etc buttons?

I am on my 5th case :) Bought a bunch just to see what I like best.

I am currently using this one and like it very much. It isn't the most protective case in the world but it does a decent job. All the ports have cutouts so there is no interference. The home key is totally unobstructed. And as a bonus it has a nifty Kickstand!!!

This thread helped me a lot when I was looking for a case for my new GS3 this week, so I thought I'd give back. I wound up going with the Incipio Silicrylic (try saying that five times fast) and I am really satisfied. I wanted a case that was middle of the road - offering decent protection without completely compromising the form factor. I also wanted the phone to be a little grippier.

The Incipio case delivers on all counts - it is well-padded, so I feel it could survive a decent drop (have not tested, obviously) and it gives you a little bevel above the screen without encroaching on it. The corners have an extra layer of plastic, so that's cool. While it does hide the glossy pebble blue finish on the back of the phone it looks pretty stylish on its own so I don't mind. The phone is definitely grippier now, without feeling like I'm sliding a brick into my pocket.

Oh and the rocker and power buttons work, if anything, better than they did before.

Good, versatile mid-range case. Would buy again.

Note: some people want coverings for their ports (I am not one of them). This case does not do that.

so I returned my otterbox, because that thing is terrible and bought 2 cases off amazon.

Amazon.com: KaysCase Slim Soft Skin Cover Case for Samsung Galaxy S3 SIII i9300 Verizon AT&T Sprint Tmobile (White): Cell Phones & Accessories
and
Amazon.com: Seidio CSR3SSGS3-BK SURFACE Case for Samsung Galaxy S III - 1 Pack - Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

both are great, very nice thin cases. I ended up keeping the white one as it doesn't even look like theres a case on the phone (my phone is white). Very good looking case, and for under $10 you can't really go wrong.

I have the Seidio Surface case with the holster. I put it in a drawer and went to the Otterbox... LOL, go figure, just the opposite of what you did.

ugh god how is this possible. the otterbox is just a crappy case. the buttons are IMPOSSIBLE to press, it doubles the weight of the phone, and doubles it in size. if you rather have protection over ease of use, looks, and feel, then this is definitely the #1 case.

I'm in construction and I have to have something ultra-durable.
The only thing I don't like about it is the sides raise so high above the glass that it is hard to hit the "back" button. But I'll deal with that in exchange for the protection.

edit: If I'm going out on the town, I can always take the Otterbox off and put on a different case... or just go naked.

I bought the Otterbox Commuter the same day I bought my phone. It wasnt my first choice but i wanted to protect my new phone.

After reading some of this thread, I will be getting a new case soon. The Otterbox is nice but its too slick, doesnt offer enough grip. Also, the buttons are very annoying.

I will take a look through this thread more and then take a look on Amazon.

After reading on this thread for the last two hours, I've finally scanned all pages! Woah! There are some great cases out there. Since I'm new here, I can't post pictures but I did want to comment on the case I'm using. I saw a couple of people here have it too, it's a Speck Candyshell. I have the "Pebble Blue/Bayou Grey" one on my Blue GSIII. I have to say, it's a pretty good case! I like that it has the two layers of protection, hybrid aspect, all in one piece. It doesn't add much bulk to the phone and on a blue gs3, looks great! It does have some cons though, the back is glossy so you do get a lot of hair line scratches all over. If looked at on an angle, you can see all the thin scratches, but nothing too major if looked at normally. Another thing about this case is that it fits so well that when you take it off, you kinda have to give it a good pull from one of the corners to take it off. This has caused my case to break from the areas that take the bend, for example mine's broken on the area right below the camera cutout, the thin space between the power button and the screen, and the part above the charger cutout. Speck did think of this problem and tried to avoid it by leaving the four corners with a material that is more flexible, in order for them to pull avoiding the pressure on other areas of the phone, but it seems it hasn't worked. I have read online on Speck's websites under the reviews of the case that this problem has affected lots of users. I contacted Speck and they do cover this under their warranty as long as purchased from an authorized retailer. I think that it's not a major problem because as long as the phone is in the case, you can't even notice where the case is broken, BUT for the price Speck charges for these...it definitely is a problem.

Besides Speck, I haven't really tried any other cases, that's why this thread has been of great use to me. Has anyone tried those cool looking 3D cases by FreshFiber? I like all the funky designs they have. After looking for minimalist cases like the Box Case by incase for the iPhone (really wish they made one for the GS3), I stumbled upon this case made by FreshFiber. It's called the Book Case. It's not quite the same style or anything but still kinda cool. I was going to get the cheap cassette silicone ones from Amazon, since they do have that "boxy" rectangular look, but I was looking for something more hard shell. I emailed FreshFiber asking if the material was hard or soft, and they replied to me that this case is made of "laser sintered Nylon" and was hard rather than soft and flexible. I think I'm gonna get one and see how it actually looks.

Just as tough a choice from switching from the iPhone to the GS3, is which case to go with.

Lots of great suggestions in this thread, and I have been pouring over the posts.

Like most of you, I love the slim form factor of the GS3. I also actually like the way it feels naked in my hand. I have been fighting not to get a case for it, but in the end, I know that the day is coming when I will drop it.

I want a slim-profile case that doesn't add much bulk but offers good protection.

I think what I have decided to purchase is the Samsung Galaxy S3 Tough Case.

Was rather impressed by this YouTube video:
