$100 or Jelly Bean upgrade for Droid Razr??

All devices released since 2011, that are capable, will be upgraded to Jelly Bean. The Razr M, Razr HD and Razr Maxx HD will be upgraded by the end of the year. Phones like the Razr and Razr Maxx were included in the "very soon" category. Since the Razr and Razr Maxx are already running ICS they will have no problem running Jelly Bean.

From what I understand Moto already has a working version of Jelly Bean that has a few minor adjustments needed. The new phones will obviously get it first, but we would be considered "next in line" for the upgrade. If not by end of the year, then probably right at the beginning. Of course, that all depends on Verizon too. I imagine a leak will be out around Christmas time.

The Motorola pledge to upgrade or pay is a pleasant surprise. Maybe Razr Maxx owners really will get JB at the beginning of 2013. What would be an even more pleasant surprise is some indication that the rumored patch for ICS is going to make its appearance in September. It seems that so many Razr owners have been having problems after upgrading to ICS and this patch is supposed to fix the radio, restore battery life, fix GPS, on and on. I think it would be nice to enjoy the full potential of ICS a little while before jumping to JB...

In theory OS updates come out every 9-12 months. That is Google releases a new version. It takes time for the individual OEMs to write the device specific software and to get it through quality assurance.

Yes, and what I'm saying is if you line it up correctly you are eligible for an upgrade every 2 major updates, and if you keep getting nexus devices you'll always be on the latest

Unless you are on Verizon, they shouldn't even be able to sell nexus phones

Do new operating systems come out that fast? We're still waiting on a fix for ICS and JB is just around the corner?

You have to keep in mind that the Razr and Razr Maxx received ICS 8 months after it was released by Google. The change from Gingerbread to ICS was also drastic and took a little more work for each manufacturer. Jelly Bean, while still a big improvement with project butter, is not on the same level of change.

Also, Google is setting the manufacturers up with the new OS versions before they are even announced to us. This means they are able to work on new updates and get them ready faster. Since Moto already has a working version of Jelly Bean for the Razr HD line, we are able to get it a little faster than in the past.

The only slow down in this new way of doing things is and always will be Verizon. They like to test everything to death. Oddly enough, they still miss stuff every single time. Of course I say this and the Verizon Razrs received ICS much faster than the GSM versions.

Verge.com updated their story to claim Razr and Razr MAXX would not recieve JB...that sounds alarming, but I can't find any confirmation on that.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would Motorola announce this only to leave out their best selling phones. And its not like the website has a direct financial motive for making/publishing wild claims like that simply to drive up traffic. Oh wait.

Actually:
TheVerge.com said:
Update: This story originally stated that the Droid 4, Droid RAZR, and Droid RAZR Maxx were among the phones Motorola would not be updating to Jelly Bean. We've updated the story to reflect the fact that Motorola will be reaching out to owners to let them know if their phones are eligible for either an upgrade or a discount.

Anything capable of running ICS is capable of running Jelly Bean. The Razr and Razr Maxx are already running ICS, so there is nothing to worry about. The Nexus and Razr/Razr Maxx share a lot of the same specs. Nexus is already running Jelly Bean, so there nothing to worry about. The only possible way that these phones would not be capable of running Jelly Bean is if there were no provision in the OS for capacitive buttons. Since the GS3 and GS2 both have capacitive buttons and will be getting Jelly Bean shortly, there is nothing to worry about.

The ONLY way that these phones will not get Jelly Bean is if Verizon or Motorola decide that they just don't want it to happen. Until either of those companies say something like this publicly, I wouldn't worry about it:

Motorola said:
We've recently realized that we hate repeat customers, money, staying in business and having a positive corporate image. Therefore, we've decided that we are going to go back on what we said publicly and broadcast all over the internet. We know this will make thousands of people very upset, but since we'd rather be watching anime than dealing with customers this works out perfectly.

uhm, they want you to buy new hardware more and more often - and pay retail for it.

Like people do with apple products - more control, more sales

why is anyone surprised by this just because moto mobility is now gogglemobility. or whatever they named the arm.

To be honest, I love my razr max and I'm happy to have it. will probably still have it by june of next year.

What you're suggesting makes no sense. If you're going to give a $100 loyalty credit, why would you go out of your way to give that credit for failing to support your product with software updates? You'd just give people credit.

And those of us in the UK will have to wait another 2years for it I suppose.
