Root [Guide] How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON

Some of you may have seen this on the intro board already, and I wouldn't have been so long-winded there if I'd have 'read the inst. first (duh). anyhow, here's the question.
Just got thru successfully rooting my wife's vm wildfire s cdma; with MUCH THANKS & PROPSto member CafeKampuchia & his thread How to root the Wildfire S with S-ON (finally!)..it was a LIFESAVER!

It was my very 1st attempt at rooting, had some trouble with the S-on thing, and to complicate things for myself I had already done the ota firmware update.
Her phone has the 2.3.4 Gingerbread (i'm assuming) firmware & 2.6.35.10 ker.
And now that this phone is rooted (CWM 5.0.2.8; Link2SD; SU; Titanium BU) I have a question about custom roms; when searching for one, should ALL the numbers match (ver., kernel, build, etc.) or can any rom be flashed? (stable ones, of course).

ANY help would be appreciated on this, as I have promised her a cool looking, well running phone. The well running part is accomplished, now for a cool look. We were scouring YouTube & came across a tutorial of 'simply honey 3.0' by simone201, and she likes that one a lot...problem is the reviewer used a Galaxy S i9000; but it was Android 2.3.3...and that's the reason for the #'s question; sooooooo....any enlightenment, thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated, as the experience will help in my next project...MY VM670 Optimus running 2.2.1...

Peace;
Sox

Hi Sox,

If you want to flash a custom rom, there are 2 things you really need to be careful about:
1) Make sure the rom is for Wildfire S (So if the youtube video shows a different phone, it might and might not work. But I wouldn't try it as it could potentially brick [Break] the phone)
2) Make sure it's the right model for you!! i.e. Marvel vs MarcelC

XDA forums has a nice collection of different roms.:
Wildfire S Android Development - xda-developers
I recommend Cyanogen 7.2 as it is much lighter than the sense roms out there (and therefore more space!!) and it makes the phone quite fast and the battery drains less in my opinion.

Hi, I tried this guide and unfortunately ended up with a hard bricked phone. Luckily I was able to exchange it for a new one and would like to try again but will wait until have better understanding on what I am doing.

My phone was a prepaid from Bell Canada. Here are the details:

Wildfire S (A510a)

Model: PG76110

MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.90.0000
MICROP-8451
RADIO-7.46.36.14M
Apr 8 2011, 17:45:10

Kernel version
2.6.35.10-g60b2609
htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Sun Apr 17 01:15:33 CST 2011

Baseband version
47.10a.35.3030H_7.46.36.14M

Build number
1.36.666.5 CL48934 release-keys

Android version
2.3.3

HTC Sense version
2.1
Browser version
WebKit/533.1

My goal was to update Android version to 2.3.5, to root it and in the same time to use European ROM in order to get it localized for european languages.
I think the original phone comes with English, French, SPanish and Chinese.

I did the 2. [OPTIONAL] Update software version to 2.3.5. There were no update through HTC OTA so I followed the "[GUIDE]How to update HTC Wildfire S/Marvel/A510e/GSM to Software Version 2.3.5" guide.
It is for A510e and I have A510a. I thought it may work because A510a is also GSM model. The guide has 3 procedures. The first one did not work for me - I got
ERROR[130]: MODEL ID ERROR. I was using the file RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.26.401.3_Radio_47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M_release_261695_signed.exe
Then I tried it with RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.2_Radio_47.23a.35.3035H_7.53.39.03M_release_225747_signed.exe. I got the same error.

I am not sure how you choose the right RUU file for your phone. It has a lot of number in the name that I guess are supposed to match the information about your phone.
Having the information about my phone what will be the right RUU to use to upgrade to Android 2.3.5

When I faild with these two different file and decide to try procedure 2. At first I just copied the PG76IMG.zip to the SD card but it did not work. I guess my phone is "branded"
I then created a gold card and copied the file to the SD card again. This time it worked. It successfully updated the phone or at least this is what I thiought. Then when I resterted it it started
blibking evry 2-3 seconds as many people already reported here. I was not able to get into the bootloader anymore.

I had to return the phone - it was withing the 14 day return period. Now I have a new one but I am hessitant do try anything before I get better undertsnading of what I am doing.
I great help will be if you can tell how to choose the right RUU to start with.

Is it safr if unlock the bootloader first and later try to upgrade to 2.3.5? Is there any difference?

Thanks

Hi,
Welcome to AF!

Since the Update is recommended for ONLY Marvel a510e Devices, You shouldn't have tried to update. That BRICKed the device. Anyhow you got a replacement! Good.

You can root your device without update also.

RUU must be choosed according to your region/country and your carrier. For you device I Think this one may be the correct: (Found on Football's Collection)

RUU_Marvel_BM_1.36.666.5_Radio_47.10a.35.3030_7.46.36.14M_release_189856_signed.exe - download now for free. File sharing. Software file sharing. Free file hosting. File upload. FileFactory.com

Hope you get done successfully!!

Hi, i want to ask sth about this problem. Because that my bootloader says ***_LOCKED_***, i chose All Other Supported Models like you said in step 3A.

3A. Getting started Create an account at htcdev.com and login. Click the "Unlock Bootloader" icon and "Get Started" button.

On the right side of the next page you will see Supported Devices and a dropdown list that says ------- Select Your Device ------- below it. If your bootloader already says ***_LOCKED_*** then choose All Other Supported Models since you do not need to update your bootloader. Otherwise choose HTC Wildfire S *. The asterisk (*) means that your phone requires a bootloader update (step 3B below).

Then, i turn to step 3C. However, instead of the things that you described, something seems ... different
"Unlocking Bootloader Instructions
Take the following steps to Unlock your Device's Bootloader.
Step 1 ...(img)
Step 2 ...(img)
Step 3 ...(img)
Step 4 ...(img)
Proceed to Step 5"

3C. Unlock the bootloader
Now you

Thank you for this. How do you tell which version of Android you will get if apply the file? I do not see anything like 2.3.5 in the file name.

Also can I update my phone to have more languages I would like the menus to be in Russian or Bulgarian for example. Thank you.

Hello, thanks for such a helpful topic. I am using wildfire htc s.

1. Is it possible to use my cell normally after rooting my device?

I mean, i just wanna install app2sd and i need root. After i install it, would i be able to use my phone normally. I am asking because i don't wanna brick my phone or change anything else in it.

2. Is it possible to upgrade android to higher version after rooting my device?

3. Processor is 600mhz. is it possible to increase it?

THanks in advance

1. Rooting, if you follow the guide very very carefully, shouldn't be hard at all. Once you root, you can install app2sd and you won't have any problem. Rooting itself will not make any difference to your phone.
2. if your phone does not use a sim card, then you can't upgrade your phone. However it is possible with a gsm phone (But you will first have to update before you root and not after)
3. It is possible to increase the procesor. However that is only possible if you flash (install) a different rom once rooted as the stock rom will not allow it. No frills CPU is one app that will make it increase

First of all, thank you very much CafeKampuchia !

I have a Bell Canada locked HTC Wildfire S A510a. I follow up your instruction. I can see *UNLOCKED* in bootloader. I also can run SuperUser, ROM Manager, Likn2SD. Looks like my cell has been unlocked. But When I put a Rogers SIM card or a Petro Canada SIM card in, I am still seeing "Network locked" ask for me enter "SIM network unlock PIN". Can anybody tell me how I can do the next step to unlock my cell. Thank you very much!

Thank you very much caro332.

One more question. Would i be able to use google play as it is right now?
i mean, i press install on the website and app installs in my phone automatically.
Rooting will only change something at the back end of the phone so there will be no change that you will be able to see. Your play store will work just the same

@birdjay,

I don't think the unlocking that you did is the same as sim locking. For that you would probably have to do something else...

1. If your bootloader shows *** LOCKED *** then there is no need to run the RUU. If not, then Caro's answer above is correct.

2. No worries here as this option does not relate to rooting.

BTW, phones don't usually brick during the rooting process. Usually it's what noobs do with their phones after rooting that bricks the phone, so be careful and make sure you do a backup of the ROM in recovery per step 5 before tinkering. ;)

Check your bootloader per the beginning of step 3 of the guide and I think you'll find that it says *** LOCKED *** meaning that it's unnecessary to run an RUU.

i know tat but i lost my stock rom..in my first backup...if any way to get back my stock rom.
thanks in advance...:thinking::thinking:

Hi, sorry I'm somewhat new to the forum and not sure if this is right posting but I have followed the instructions quite well and successfully unlocked my bootloader yay:D when I install recovery it works perfect everything goes great, up until I actually flash from sd card the file you have provided.
it has installed superuser but will NOT give me root access whatsoever, I'm not sure where I could have gone wrong. Hopefully somebody can help me please as i'm quite excited to upgrade to CM7.

Phone Stats:

BELL GSM
Marvel(A510a)
FW 2.3.3 (did not do the update to 2.3.5 as i'm not sure if it is only for the A510e devices.)

again sorry for the n00b questions but I can't figure this out and have spent countless hours trying different methods, none of which have bricked my phone thankfully.

EDIT I have rooted successfully, but the SU binary updater is now failing on "Fixing database"

EDIT EDIT LOL Okay actually just had to update my facebook app and then it also offered Superuser update, successfully installed CM7 to my HTC wildfire S but will be trying ICS; definitely thanking the author of this guide! cheers guys!

If it says relocked, then your have unrooted your phone. You will need to go through the process again: Unlock & root. Before that, you will not be able to flash any rom.

go over at xda forums and search for football's roms. Those are all stock roms for wildfire S

The HTCDEV procedure does not work for me, so I want to try the micro-SD card method.

I'm still not sure which RUU to use however. I have a Virgin Mobile phone and the HTCDEV unlock page lists an RUU for that phone, but it is 2.14.351.1 PG7610000 and my phone says PG76200. There are two RUUs listed for PG76200, they are:

USCC 1.02.573.00 PG7620000
Sprint VM 1.02.652.00 PG7620000

If you asked me to guess I would use the Sprint VM one because maybe the VM stands for Virgin Mobile?

Thanks for any advice.
