Outgoing call issues

I have a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean which I haven't rooted. People complain that there is a lot of audio distortion - static or buzzing sound - when I call them. Curiously, this disappears when I use the headset or speakerphone - so it suggests its not a mic issue. I suspect its a software problem but haven't been able to find a solution online.

I've only had this phone a week and pretty much update to JB a day after I got it - so I have no idea if this problem was there when I had ICS.
