Root [S-OFF] Juopunutbear S-OFF -Beta Release

When I run control bear I get "The system cannot find the path specified" as the very first message. Then it says "connecting to device... searching device... the system cannot find the path specified" then "connect device and install drivers". I did the adb/fastboot test (the optional step 10 on unlimited.io) so I thought my drivers were ok. I uninstalled htc sync too. What am I doing wrong?

thanks

Sounds like the drivers aren't installed. I'd reinstall htc sync, make sure all drivers are working, uninstall and try again.

Uninstalled htc driver, reinstalled htc sync, tested that and it worked ok (is this what you meant by "make sure all drivers are working?") uninstalled htc sync (but not htc driver) and I get the same problem. "adb devices" command still works as well as the rest of optional step 10... I'm gonna try again later back on the same pc that I originally rooted on, maybe I'll have more luck.

Success! Got my wife's too. Wasn't without confusion...

On mine, after I did the wire trick, it rebooted and was waiting for the device, the count kept going up to 45 and then it would say check your adb/fastboot drivers, and count again, over and over... eventually ctrl+c'ed out of it, restarted the phone, when I ran control bear again, I didn't have to do the wire trick again, it was all good.

On my wife's, after I did the wire trick, the phone wouldn't come back on. Had to pull battery and try again. Did wire trick again, this time it worked.

Are there any options for doing this on a Mac other than by having Parallels or similar installed and emulating either Windoze or Linux?

I definitely wouldn't try it within an emulator, find a friend who'll let you use their windows box. You're working on low level hardware commands that don't work very well with an emulator.

I ended up using VirtualBox and ubuntu -- the VirtualBox and linux set up was far worse than the wire trick part. I'm ready to turn my phone into an Evo 3D now. Woohoo!

EDIT: Never mind, I went through with it on stock, and everything went well, am now S-off.

Do not use the stock rom.
Should I not try S-off if I'm on stock Sense? I didn't see anything mentioned in the instructions that says I shouldn't be. All it says is:

Be on the Stock RUU and be rooted (have superuser and/or an unsecured boot image installed).

I jumped on the ControlBear IRC and they tell me that their HBOOT only works with GB and ICS. Is there any information out there on getting a JB ROM to flash on my VM Evo V 4g? I'm particularly interested in the Paranoid Android ROM.

Since you are s-off you can change your hboot. I'm using a jb rom right now on my sprint 3vo
