Hubby and I are currently on Verizon and want to save a little money so looking at this phone on Virgin. Would you recommend them? Is there a better phone or service? I'm just curious about users experiences with them. The whole "too good to be true" adage keeps ringing in my head. Thanks. :)

I always get dropped calls and I always never get that one important text or the other person never gets it from me. The phone I own never matters cause it happens with all of them. My roommate does not have the dropped call problem but does have the text message problem. I'm always using my Google voice to text myself to see if text messages are working. I got a Motorola Atrix 2 from off of eBay a month ago and I'm gonna try that on straight Talk come the 10th. I'm sick of the sh1tty service and the piss poor buggy phones....

Its nothing like my roommate asking me what I want for dinner and I reply back. But when I get home its nothing because she never got my text message.

I'm gonna take my money else where.

If you are comfortable with rooting/modding phones, the phone is awesome with a different radio. Speedy and solid.

Service highly depends on where you happen to live. I have pretty good sprint coverage where I live but my data speed fluctuates a lot depending on where I happen to be (I get around 500kbps at home, around 200kbps at work). The point is it is no where near as all encompassing coverage as Verizon, so if you need it to work everywhere then you may want to stick with them (I hear they have some prepaid options as well).

i highly recommend virgin with the evo v, i have great coverage in my area i usually have full signal where i am, you should also check the coverage in your area as it depends on location, virgin mobile is a good deal for 35 a month if you wanted unlimited minutes i suggest boost mobile with shrinkage your bill goes down 5 dollars a month, boost and virgin both run off sprint's network, if you do not have good sprint coverage in your area try straight talk with at&t or pageplus which runs off verizon.

Either Evo/Virgin or GNEX/Straightalk... You will have to tinker with the phone for it to work probably but it wasn't as bad for me as you would think from reading this board and I have no issues at all after doing the fix everything thread which I would have done anyway because I like to tinker. (wow, that's a hell of a sentence). Good Luck to you.

I love the low bill, and I'm pretty happy with the Evo V. That said, Virgin's coverage leaves something to be desired. I live in a large city, and I frequently drop signal entirely, have such poor reception that the phone won't place a call, or have audio breaking up during calls. It's not just this phone either, it's actually better on the Evo than on the Triumph that I had before. 4G (WiMax) is great when I have a solid connection, but I usually just turn it off unless I'm sitting still in one spot. When you are moving it drops in and out our switches towers too often, and when it connects to a new tower the delay before data picks up is irritating.

I have been content to deal with the annoyances, I see it as a worthwhile trade off for the low bill ($37.50/month after tax for one line,) but I'm jumping ship to Ting soon. They also run on Sprint's network, but they allow voice roaming on Verizon's network too. They also have access to LTE on Sprint. I will actually pay a little less per month with them based on my usage, and they have a MUCH better selection of phones. The only downside I see is that the phones themself are more expensive, but they have new high end phones (like the Galaxy S III and the Photon Q) while the top phone on Virgin is a discontinued Sprint leftover.

I would completely recommend this phone to you if you are comfortable tinkering with it. The only problem with this phone is that it has the radio interface error sometimes. That can be completely fixed if you flash another radio and are s-off ;) also make sure you have coverage in your area. And if you need tech support (don't call them if you're rooted or have a custom rom installed ) the support is actually pretty darn good ;)

It seems that most of the people have reached a consensus that this phone is recommended only if you're comfortable rooting and hacking it. Especially to get better service out of it. Otherwise you might as well look elsewhere.

P.S.- Ting may be the latest and greatest when it comes to phones, but if I switched to them, I'd have to pay a lot more for the service. No thanks.

ask a thousand different people and youll get a thousand different opinions.

I love virgin mobile but when I first moved to them from T-Mobile I had to take the risk of not knowing the coverage or quality of service.

so knowing that NOW, my only advice to someone looking at vm phones would be to go online or facebook or something and find SOMEONE who owns at least a virgin mobile smartphone or the one you want to buy, buy them lunch and have them come down to your house and see how good the service is there. and maybe at some places on your daily commute as well.

the cost of convincing someone to help you find that information out NOW could save you months of frustration if you bought the phones and realized you have no coverage in some places.

take me for instance, tmobile has coverage at my house and I didnt think twice of it. I moved to VMusa to take advantage of the cheaper plan and although I get great coverage nearly everywhere in LA. my house is a dead zone, which sucks becuase I miss important calls and texts.

I wish I got my friend who was on virgin to come down and I could see first hand there was a signal problem rather than lose work from missing texts and calls over the following months.

just some advice, if you find out the service isnt that great you can try another carrier.

on a related note, the phones I have used have been stellar. the Optimus V, the Triumph, and the Evo V 4g. I loved these phones. Im on the evo now and it has its problems out of the box, you DO need to flash the evo 3d radios and stuff to fix it, BUT thats the cost of getting a phone THIS awesome for as little as 230 full and outright on no contract.

Of course if you do not want to mod anything, the One V is a very solid choice as well.

*edit*

lots of people use the argument "it should work out of the box!" but in truth almost nothing in life is like that except closed ecosystem products like Apples devices.

even Windows laptops and desktops you buy from stores have bloatware and bad drivers and locked admin accounts. you usually wipe that copy of windows and install a fresh one when you get home anyway.

I think we should lose this entitlement mentality and be thankful we can get hardware this powerful and have an open source OS with a community to constantly update the phone. and not just this phone but all android phones. thats the spirit of the open source community at work.

5years ago none of us would have ever dreamed of a dual-core 3D superphone, we were totally happy with dumb flip phones and Razrs. What changed that now none of these are "good enough?"

what if there wasnt any community fixing these phones and we were forced to buy broken phones and live with them forever

If Sprint service is good in your area, Virgin is a good choice. Ask friends and neighbors at home and work.

Stock is okay, some have better luck than others regarding the errors.

My advice is this...
If you just want a nice smartphone, grab the HTC One V, it's a great little phone right out of the box. If you want a really powerful phone that can do TONS, get the Evo V and do the tweaks and put a rom on it. Once tweaked you get an absolutely amazing phone. Most people however are not prepared to go that far, but they also don't need that much power.

The One V would be great, but the lack of a front camera kind of kills it for me.

ting looks very promising :D the only down side for me is they dont have unlimited texting but 6000 message seems around my area i think  but 1/4 a cent does not seem too bad for extra messages.

I can attest to the EVO V front camera being REALLY great. in good lighting it takes 720p res shots and they look VERY good. I've been using it a lot.

its a huge step up from the vga camera of the triumph.

the camera app has lots of good effects and you can record video with the front cam too. I can see that being useful for on-the-go Vloggers.
