What's the point of this phone?

Not every new phone has to be bigger, better, faster, more HD'er to have a point. I have a Bionic and it's fine for me except it carries like a brick. I am tempted to wait for the Razr HD just because it is the next big thing from Motorola....but really the M is the right choice for me. I have a high end Andrid tablet that is usually with me if I want to watch a movie or work in a spreadsheet or something. As long as I can read email and see reasonably clear pictures on my phone i'm satisfied.

For me the M is basically the same display as my Bionic in a significantly smaller, lighter, thinner package. Less memory I suppose but for me that would just mean less unused memory.

If I was one of those people who thinks they need to take video of everything that happens around them and show it immediately to all the people who also just saw it happen then the HD would be a little less eye strain for my friends and would be the best choice....but I'm not that guy.

Just for the record and so that others reading this do not get confused.

An encrypted bootloader (they all come locked) does not prevent rooting, custom roms or wifi tether. It does limit some customization like custom kernels though.

Also, bloatware has become a non-issue with ICS.

My wife has a RAZR MAXX and you can not disable Facebook so this is not entirely true.

Sure you can, just hit the disable button and it is disabled. You have to uninstall the updates though.

This is from my Razr Maxx which is stock.

The reason for the phone seems obvious to me - the same/similar capabilities of the Droid Razr in a smaller handset.

My fiancee has been using the Droid Incredible (original) for a long time and when it came time to replace it, she didn't want a large phone like my original Razr, which she found way too big and cumbersome for her hand. The size of the M made it a clear favorite. I kinda like the compact size, myself.

It's a great phone for those of us tired of the ever larger size of the new phones. I don't want a tablet, I want a phone that fits in my hand. Have had the phone two days now after a Thunderbolt for two years and what an improvement. Same size screen but much smaller phone size. Great battery life also -- on for 17 hours with 78% battery remaining. Same processor and speed as the yet to be released Razr Droid HD and Maax.

What's the point of this phone?

To me, a good upgrade to my droid incredible 2...
I was not impressed with the droid incredible 4g and this razr m has a 4.3 display; while still remaining compact, a 1.5ghz Qualcomm S4 processor, on screen ICS navigation buttons, and is made of what i see to be as quality materials, for 50 dollars cheaper.
...and not to mention a larger battery, i know non removable...
Verses the dinc4G, hands down it's the better device for $$$ and for someone who doesn't want a 4.3+ to 4.8 massive screen phone.
This hits the bullseye for me!
Case closed...:p

That said, I totally agree that this particular device doesn't seem to serve a purpose, considering there'll also be the RAZR HD.
What do you guys mean by "serves no purpose", functionally or in terms of spec games? Serves perfectly my purpose - I personally hate huge phones but unfortunately Android despite all this talk about platform diversity really nowdays seems all about bragging rights who's bigger. If not for Razr M I wouldn't have abandoned Apple, yes, to a large extent because of form factor. What other reasonably sized and modernly speced Android phone on Verizon you would suggest?

I think its to see how many people will purchase a phone with a sh!tty screen. It's worse than the razr (not the razr is bad, but new phone should be better). Whoever from moto decided to use it should be kicked in the nuts. It's 2012, not 2007, 2008

Not everyone is as concerned with the screens resolution. There are a ton of phones out there that have low resolution screens and sell like crazy. A lot of people are looking for speed and this phone will offer that in a small package. Would it be better with a hi rez screen? Of course, but the price would be higher and they already have 2 phones coming with HD screens.

Like OTD said people want fast reliable phones yes having a good screen is better but its about reliability:)

Umm no. That's what you want. Its almost like rooting. Most of the general public don't care about it. On here, its what a lot like.

Most phone owners are clueless about phones and don't care what processor is in a phone. Most of the public shop at the vzw stores and compare phones with others on display.

Actually, if you look at what most customers say they want in cars, phones, computers, etc. the top answers are speed, reliability and price. People are looking for things that will last and perform well over time. It is one of the reasons the iPhone is popular. It has built a reputation for being easy to use and performing without having issues (I'm not saying that is the case, I'm saying that is its reputation). Display quality doesn't really become a top priority until you are discussing TVs with most people.

As far as people being clueless, there is a trend towards people doing more research now. While I'm sure that there are plenty that still don't, marketing trends are actually showing that most people go online to do some research before they go out and buy something. Especially something that costs more than $100. They also ask the sales people in the stores. I'm not saying anyone cares about the brand or build of the processor in the phone, but they do care about the numbers. They can also typically see the difference in performance comparing the phones. In the end though, the $99 price tag will pull most people in.

While I agree people research most things, I truly believe phones are the exception. Look at how people rave about the new features of ios6 that Android has had for a while.

This video is dead on about the public. Now, even being iPhone fans, they couldn't tell the difference between a 4s and a 5.

Just because people can't tell you what processor a phone is using doesn't mean they don't care about speed. Anybody can tell when a phone is slow. You don't need any interest in technology for that.

The screen on the M is more than fine for most tasks, and the biggest selling point is the size. If you need some gargantuan phone with an HD screen, then go get that, but it's stupid to think this phone doesn't have a market.

You can't really consider that the average person. All of those segments are edited to remove anyone that doesn't look foolish.

As far as people being excited about features in iOS6, they should be. Those are features that are new to the iPhone. They may have been around for a while on Android, but if you are an iPhone user they are brand new.

The point is, there is a market for every phone made. While there will always be people that care about a specific feature or think that a phone should have it. There are plenty of others that care nothing about it. The Razr M was designed to be small, fast and affordable. Moto has had these screens in this size for quite a while. There are plenty of people buying them and happy to have them. If someone is happy with their phone then who are you or I to say anything different about it.

I'm not saying no one should buy it, I'm saying not many will. If people walk into a store and check different phones out, they most likely will get one with a clearer screen.
Freakfordell- let the average person use both the razr and the m and have them tell you which one is faster. They wont be able to. Its like LTE downloading at 10 Mbps to 50 Mbps - in most situations on phone browsing, you can't tell the difference.

On edit, when did I say anything about phone size?

The average person isn't upgrading from a RAZR to a RAZR M anyway, since the average person doesn't upgrade more than once every 2 years.

I was only replying to your assertion that people don't care about speed, but care about screen resolution more. That's asinine.

The M's appeal is that it's a complete package of close to high end specs in a very small package. Like I said, if you care about the screen so much that you want to rent an 18 wheeler to carry your phone around, that's cool. Just don't think you don't look foolish when you write off an excellent device in an absolutely wonderful size just because it makes a little sacrifice on the screen (which most people don't actually care about, if they even notice).

You didn't, but all the Android phones that have high resolution screens are giant.

I, and many others, will give up resolution for a good size without any hesitation whatsoever.

Why can't they make that size phone with a better screen? On the specs of their website, it says the screen is super amoled. It looks as pixelated as the x. The razr screen looks a lot better imho.
What about the incredible?

They could, and I'm sure at some point they will. At this time, though, this is the best we've got.

I've only messed with the RAZR for a couple of minutes, but the screen didn't bother me. I haven't seen the M in person yet, but I doubt the screen will bother me there, either.

As for the Incredible, that's cool, too, and it's quite possible I would have considered that (had I been a Verizon user up for an upgrade at the time it was released). I'd rather have Motorola's new skin over Sense, though, and the bigger screen is nice, also. I also really like Motorola hardware (but HTC hardware is great, too). I'm a GSM user, anyway, so for me personally, the Motorola really caught my eye. I don't think the Incredible is a world phone, and even if it is, the US bands are probably locked down, anyway. It's possible that HTC released an international version, but trying to go through all of the models that HTC releases takes too much work. At least Motorola, for the most part, just drops the Droid part and keeps the rest of the name the same.
