***Official Ice Cream Sandwich Discussion Thread***

I now have a page on my site dedicated information regarding the Google/Moto abandonment of the ICS/JB for the following devices;
Atrix MB860
Atrix MB861
Atrix ME860
Electrify MB853
Photon MB855
DROID X2 MB870
XT882
MT870

It has links to press coverage, forum threads, Facebook pages. If anybody emails Google/Moto about this or the $100 credit and receives a response please forward it to me via the site. Should legal action be taken the info I am trying to compile will be key.

over at moto forums. interesting but hopefully not true.

I just need to clarify something.

So, this doesn't mean that I wouldn't be able to root, it just means that I wouldn't be able to load a custom ROM, correct?

What about other advantages from rooting, like overclocking the processor and all those goodies? Does the locked bootloader prevent me from doing those also?

You can probably load custom Roms but not custom kernels. Without custom kernels there is no overclocking.

2.3.5 came with a bootloader that can't be unlocked so you can root, but can't install a custom recovery which means no roms/kernels/etc. Additionally, you can't downgrade back to 2.3.4 any more as well.

You'll be stuck with "locked ROMs" as well, which don't do a whole lot. Mof's 2.3.5ish is probably the most well-known, but there may be a few others. Most developers I've seen focus on fully unlocked ROMs as they have more potential.

Also, in case you haven't seen it, CNET has a nice little write-up covering the anger Photon and Atrix users are feeling right now. Moto says they would like to provide unlocked bootloaders to end-users if they can work through "carrier issues." Personally I call BS on that, at least for Sprint. Both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S have ridiculously easy-to-unlock bootloaders, and HTC offers the option on its phones too (I believe). The only think holding Moto back from unlocking the Photon is their own incompetence. I'm not holding out hope.

As some may know. Both myself (Support My Moto) and julian_fern (Update My Moto) have been pushing it pretty hard. Getting the cnet coverage mentioning both campaign sites has been a help.
I will tell you guys this. If Moto will give us unlock and source, myself and the devs on the Support My Moto team will work together to build everybody a d@mn fine release and worry about our personal releases later.

Like the article says "Update My Moto" is for social networking and "Support My Moto" is for filing complaints and signing petitions. If you want things to change share, file complaints and sign the petitions.

Peace

Exactly, this whole mess is on Motorola. They screwed up somewhere and are now just trying to pass the blame.

Yep, we can blame both Motorola and Sprint but since the update never left Motorola for Sprint testing, this one is Motorola's fault. I am guessing they had problems in testing and not everything was working right so they just didn't want to spend the time and money to finish the update rather than build a crappy, dirty update like the Droid RAZR.

Guys help me understand something. I read that a 95% complete version of (jb or ICS - cant remember) leaked. Does that mean that the Photon roms on XDA (AOKP) are fully functional? The one ROM states no camcorder but didnt see anything about 4G -

Just trying to understand what has been leaked, and what it has done for Photon owners if anything.

Can we hope for a Photon specific leak? Are people giving up at this point?

Most ROMs require that you unlock the bootloader which breaks 4G, so always add 4G to that "not working" list.

As far as the Atrix leak. There's some useful stuff in the files but it will take some time before devs get it in their ROMs. Then a little bit more time till some of that stuff is moved over to the Photon.

Without an official unlock from Moto, don't expect working 4G anytime soon.

Many of you may not know me. I'm sure many of you do...may even use my work.

My favorite mis-truth by Motorola during this entire process is that ICS/JB "do not perform to acceptable levels on the device". I find it hard to believe that Moto's devs have an innate ability to create a good, stable ICS/JB build for the Photon or Atrix. As proof of this, I submit the following:

ABOUT ME:

I am a 34 year old PHARMACIST. I have NEVER been trained in or taken a course in computers (save for a typing course in High School). I dabbled with linux, and until I joined XDA in Feb 2012, I had never even owned an Android powered device. The MOST involved thing I had done till then was install Arch Linux on my PC.

I have 7 builds of Jellybean for each of the Photon and Atrix. AOKP, CM10, CNA, MIUI.us, MIUIAndroid, XenonHD, and Paranoid Android. Come to think of it I think the Photon an Atrix are one of a very few devices on XDA to have 5 roms each built on Android 4.1.2 (JZ054K).

With the exception of some GL driver related issues (video camera not functional, stutter/lag on home screen, write screen on navigation issue), they are nearly fully functional.

When I compare "Performance" between my wife's stock Photon and mine based on ANY of my JB builds, I am amazed that anyone could say that it is "not acceptable". So, they are saying that the performance of the Stock GB build IS acceptable. To that, I say this:
1) How is a 90+ second boot-up process on a Dual-Core 1GB Ram device acceptable (GB Stock) when it can boot up in about 25 seconds or less (JB ROMs)?
2) How is it acceptable that the stock camera has a terrible lag between the shutter press and the taking of the picture (lest we even talk about the time it takes for the device to shoot a SECOND picture). I can take 5 pictures (all clear) in the time my wife takes 2 with hers
3) How is it acceptable that my wife should have nearly no service in Target (or any big box store) while I still have 3 bars?
4) How is it acceptable that the stock GB build only sees the address of my BT headset, while my MIUI builds actually see the NAME I designated it and can tell me the charge level?!?

Interesting...looks like my builds seem to be ahead in performance...now to compare the people making the builds
1) Me-Pharmacist with No Computer training
2) Them-Team of trained, educated Software Engineers

Yet they can't get it working to "acceptable levels"?!?!

Hmmm...interesting...somehow it just stinks to the heavens of BuLL$***

90+ second boot-up time? Man, I wish. Mine takes a good 4-5 minutes from cold boot to full usability (widgets all loaded). Of course, it's probably swimming in cruft.

Anyway, although I have not done anything with my Photon beyond rooting it, I fully appreciate the work you, Joker, Lokifish, mof, Shabby, and all of the other devs have put into the Photon. It never had the broad appeal (or manufacturer support) of the GS3 or even an HTC phone, but nonetheless you guys keep plugging away at it. Good luck in your continued efforts, one day I hope to take advantage of them!

I was being kind..trying to show respect to the device that I love. :)

For the most part, Loki and I are the only ones still trucking on the Photon. Haven't seen Shabby on it in a while (or Mof that I recall..though his rom did help me update profile last night when I put the Photon on my daughter's line). Joker's had a bad year, and has taken some time away...

Photon got screwed because Sprint and Moto never really have been partners like Moto and Verizon or ATT. Due to that, the S2 got all the hype and the Photon got the shaft.

I actually bought an S2 yesterday...nice phone...has ICS official....but it feels like a kids plastic toy compared to the Photon, and the fit and finish just isn't what the Photon is. I will be using it, as it's more fully functional, but I plan to continue devving on the Photon and Atrix.

Joke of the Day!
How do you install the Google Calender App on an 8 month old Tegra2 Moto?

You hit it with a hammer and by a 2 year old HTC Incredible S!
(Out of 44 phones released by major manufacturers in 2011 that have been upgraded to ICS or better, only two are Moto's. This isn't even including the Nexus line. HTC, LG, Samsung and even ZTE, of all people, seem to be able to upgrade their Tegra2 phone to ICS. WTF Moto!)

Well, Motorola was at least nice enough to shake our hand before sticking us with a knife. They just updated the list of devices getting the $100 credit, which the Photon was included in, and the list of eligible devices to upgrade to, the Photon Q. What a joke.

Motorola Provides List of Eligible Devices For $100 Trade-In Program – Updates Jelly Bean Release Schedule As Well

Don't you mean a "REACH AROUND" before they stuck something else somewhere else?

I emailed moto. I yelled at them for selling me a product were they couldn't keep there promise...

Me: In lieu of no further updates to the Motorola Photon, I will be staying away from your company products. Motorola promised an update to a current Android system and then decided it wouldn't be cost effective to update the phone anymore. Well, I will not be spending anymore money on Motorola products again. I will switch to Samsung or HTC. Thanks for the false hope. I hope Motorola realizes what they are doing to customers.
