Help JuiceDefender and ICS

Maybe it's just me, but JuiceDefender seems to take FOR EVER to re-establish my data connection. Many times it requires a "flight mode fix" in order to get it reconnected. The JD Log even shows that it is taking to long to establish the data connection and resets the radio.

Is this a common problem? I know it took a little while to re-establish the data on my Incredible, but the Nexus is taking like 2 to 3 minutes (or a manual fix).

Without juice defender my phone takes almost a minute to establish a connection.

I thought that it was just me, I'll be watching the answers for this one! I even thought about just not using JD altogether because of this.

That's weird. Why would your data connection be disconnected unless you were using something like JD to disable it?

I removed Juice Defender because I too felt it was slowing my data connection. It is better without Juice Defender.

Battery saver apps like JD sometimes cause delayed data reconnection on any phone, not just Nexus. It seems like random and luck.

Mine wakes up pretty quick with data. With WiFi on, it sometimes takes a little longer but not more than 10~15 seconds.

It takes the same time as hitting the data toggle widget, only you dint have to remember to press it on and off. About 1.5 seconds.

Not to derail the thread, but I haven't found JuiceDefender to be worth the megabytes the code is written on.

Do you guys have the paid version and if so, does it work better than the free one?

I haven't noticed JD help my batt. life one iota, so I got rid of it.

Short answer for me is, yes, when running Juice Defender (free), the phone sometimes takes a while to reconnect, especially if I'm receiving a sketchy 4G signal. It'll dick around with the 4G for a couple of minutes before it reverts to 3G.

Juice Defender has also randomly caused my WiFi to get out of whack, so my widget shows WiFi half on (faded blue bar) with no service, but the Settings menu shows it as off. Switching one switches the other, so Settings will show on but the widget will then show off. Only a reboot solves this.

So Juice Defender hasn't really proved to be too useful for me (I know a lot of users swear by it), and I use it only intermittently. Waiting patiently for 4.0.5 or whatever before I get more heavily into power management.

I have the pro version, tried it out first....or tried to try it out and honestly did not seem to make all that much difference. Real issues here with data connections...plus I use talk a lot and need a connection for that.

The only thing that really helped was being able to have it control wifi to come on when near certain hotspots.

Other than that the UI is a bloated over done hard to understand POS that is hacked with add ons and no cohesive flow! I think a well performing app is only half the product...the guy needs to hire some one to clean up the instructions and interface...its not his forte.

In short, my opinion would be not worth the trouble of using it given all the issues with data reconnect and the maybe 30 minutes extra battery you get from it.

I've noticed this more often, where it also requires me to toggle airplane mode. In general, it seems like the GN can be a bit shaky with data reception.

In my experiences, when juice defender works (saving battery), it tends to do so well enough, however, it can also exacerbate the above issue, which for me, can be enough to uninstall it (especially now that I'm gaining more access to wifi at the workplace, thank goodness).

BTW, this is on the pro version, but I'd stick with the free version for a while (balanced setting), before considering anything further. I've still found the balanced setting to be most beneficial, save for the above.

what needs to be remembered is that ICS is still new software. JD does take time to establish connection because it actually turns it completely OFF.. when your phone is idle your data its never completely OFF... thats why it is taking some time to turn it back on.. also if you have it set for WiFi prefered it will FIRST look for a wifi connection it can connect to (for a period of time you specify it will look for wifi before it goes to 4g)... to avoid this constantly, you need to be ultimate user i believe and have it set to "learning" and also the setting that it uses to mark your location. That way if your NO WHERE NEAR a place you normally would have Wifi it will just kick to 4g. if your in the area of a normal wifi connection but not in range of that particular wifi it will search for that specific amount of time predetermined in the settings.

JD can be quite useful if you understand how it works and set it up properly. I no longer use it but when I used it on Fascinate, Vortex it gave about 50% boost in battery life in balanced mode. But those are 3G phones, so reconnecting data is simpler, quicker than 4G phones in general.

i dont use juice defender when I use 4G, it disconnects 4G connection for me, so I only use it when im on wifi.

basically... JD will do everything you guys are asking for or can be adjusted to suite your needs like how some of you say 4g issues or wifi issues... just take the time and read a little or ask a direct question and we can see what we can do for ya

Can JD toggle 4G radio on/off depending on location or time now? I know it can do that for WiFi, but not sure about 4G LTE. I used it before, but that was long time ago with 3G phone. If it can toggle 4G with location/time, I will give it try.

I bought the Ultimate version because it has the ability to selectively enable connection for individual apps in sleep mode. It's the only way to get geo-tracking apps like AlpineQuest to work with JD.

Also, do NOT let JD control screen brightness. That caused my phone to turn itself full off. In general, I'd stay away from any of the "experimental" features.

I also had trouble with conflicts between JD and other widgets that control phone settings (e.g. the "wifi toggle" beautiful widget). Stick with the features provided with JD.

I had juice defender ultimate up until JB, didn't care for how it worked or rather didn't seem to make a difference, (other than frustration level)so I uninstalled it. Haven't missed it a bit.

I have Ultimate and it says x2.05 which is double. Pretty good if you ask me. I've had JD ultimate on all my phones. I've done comparisons on each phone to see if it actually works and every phones its save me big. So I can say first hand that it does work and it works well. Just gotta set it up correct.

I can say just about every time, I've had to help someone with some wierd issue. (alarms not working, missing e-mails, missed phone calls, random reboots, data corruption)

It's been traced back to JD(or a similar app)...

I think it "may" have had some benefit on older versions of Android, but I'm not even sure about that.

What I find amusing, are the people that claim "if you take the time to set it up it works great!" If they took half that time to set-up their apps correctly when they installed them they wouldn't have a issue to begin with.

I can't see how can not increase your battery life compared to not having it installed, but I guess it depends on what you are expecting form it and what you need.

I mainly use it to turn on 3g every 30mins for 15 seconds. Just using this feature alone has to save you battery power when compared to having 3g on all the time or am I missing something. Last time I checked this wasn't a feature available in the OS, unless someone else can shed some light?

After finally figuring out how to work it and adjust it the increase in battery life if tremendous. I have it turn off data & Wifi except for a brief window every hour or so to check mail, weather etc. You can manually override whenever you want to. Also you can whitelist the apps you want to automatically override the data off setting . I'm using paid version and find it extremely useful. Yesterday I had 25 % battery remaining after 14 hours with 38% of that used by the screen. Using the 2100 AH extended battery (Also using Lux screen brightness control--instead of JD for that function).
I also have it set to auto on / off bluetooth when I start my car and auto on/off Wifi when I enter or leave my home WiFi SSID.
Works great for me!
Also I find that there are settings in Franco's custom Kernel that control clock speeds and voltages which also help battery life.
You will find a slight lag with all this but to me it is worth it for the extra battery life.
