Forfeited OTA update?

Hi. I am with 3 UK, and a few days ago I got a notification on my phone that a firmware update was available. After some investigation I discovered that this is the upgrade to Jelly Bean. Unfortunately I was away on holiday and had no access to Wifi. My phone is set up to download updates only via Wifi, and in any case I wouldn't want a 280 MB download on my monthly data. So every day I had to postpone the download until I got home.

I got home last night, and this morning I hooked my phone up to Kies to do a backup in preparation for the upgrade. I then noticed that the icon in the notifications bar for the download had disappeared. I have gone to the Software update option in Settings, and every time I now check for updates I now get the following message:

"Access to the software update service is provided to users in the order in which they request it. Try later"

What is that supposed to mean? The order in which they request it?? Have I somehow forfeited the OTA update either because I kept on postponing, or because I connected to Kies (i.e. Samsung wants me to upgrade via Kies now)? Incidentally exactly the same has happened to my brother who has also lost his OTA update. Does anybody know how I can get the OTA update again? Or do I simply have to wait my turn again??

Well, 36 hours later, and I still haven't had any further OTA message on my phone. My brother got his this morning and managed to download the update. I am still getting the same incomprehensible message when I check for updates manually - I understand that it means that the servers are busy, in which case, why can't they simply say that the servers are busy?!!

Last week I got the OTA messages every day while I was away. Now that I'm back I've got nothing. Am I likely to get the OTA messages again, or should I consider the Kies option? My understanding is that Kies is a little buggy, so I am a little wary of going down this route. Should I be wary? What would you suggest?

Thanks.

OK, so here's the latest update. I tried the manual search again this morning, and this time I got the option to download the OTA update. I quickly switched on my router, went back to the phone and checked that my Wifi settings were correct - and then the OTA message disappeared! I tried again, but all I got was the usual nonsense.

So I rang 3 "Technical Support" (ha ha....) who tried to tell me that the OTA download comes from Samsung along with the OTA messages. I rang Samsung Technical Support and was told that the download in fact comes from 3's servers, which is what I suspected all along. They knew nothing about the nonsense message we are getting when doing the manual check, and they referred me back to 3.

So I rang 3 again, and I was told that the updates are released in batches according to the phone's IMEI number. I pointed out that I did get the OTA message this morning, so clearly my update is available. The lady at tech support then checked with a colleague and told me that 3 haven't released the JB update yet!! I told her that her colleague is clearly misinformed as the update has been out since last Wednesday. She told me that there is no guarantee that I will get the OTA message again, or how long I would have to wait, and that my only alternative is to upgrade through Kies. And so that is what I am doing now while I am typing this.

So be aware that it seems that it is possible to forfeit the OTA upgrade if you postpone it too often. I will let you know how it goes with Kies.
