Do not use it.

I just enabled it, set it to device as the method and it is asking me for a password that I do not know or set. Also, it continually crashes apps upon bootup. Looks like a reinstall is in order for me...

******* hell, guess I won't bother with that setting...

P.S. this is on ICS, the new over the air update.

To use encryption you should really factory default first, then set a device password in Settings-Security first, since you will lose all non-secure and pattern lock unlocking and be forced to unlock via password. Also remember this only encrypts INTERNAL storage, not the external microSD card since it is FAT32 and the native Android encryption cannot encrypt that type of partition. In many devices this will also perform a format of the internal storage in the process of activating the encryption.

That being said, unless your company is forcing you to do this because of their security policy, there is no reason the average person needs to encrypt data on their device.

I don't do storage encryption only device data for the contacts/email/personal information on the device. Everything else I leave unencrypted because it screws with my 1080p recordings if I have them enabled.
