Root [Verizon] If I root and install jelly bean, what happens when the official update rolls out?

Ok, I've wanted root for a long time but have struggled doing it. I'm semi savvy with my computer but recently it has been so messed up, I simply can't do it. There is a shop here in Houston that roots and installs jb for $40. Thinking about going there on Saturday to have it done. I dont mind paying the cash since my comp is broken.

So are these ROMS really jelly bean or just a knock off?

I've heard that when Verizon does an update I may lose root. Is that true?

And what about when I get the real deal? Should I run the official jb or use the rom they install? I just want my software to be up to date. Need some input here....

Thanks!

I personally wouldn't pay $40 for them to do it. It's free money for them, and will take them about 20-30 minutes when it is all said and done. Plus, I just wouldn't trust anyone else with my phone.

I'm just guessing, but to me it sounds like you would be better off waiting for the Jelly Bean update. I think you'll find that you weren't missing out on much. People like to root because of the fun of trying new ROM's, new builds, and cool custom features. The Samsung update will be more stable than the custom ROM's, and probably more of what you are looking for, IMO.

People who are knowledgeable enough to answer your posts go to the root forum(s); it won't do you much good if many people not interested in rooting or flashing see your posts about rooting and flashing.

I wouldn't recommend having someone else do it, even for free. When something isn't working right or goes wrong (and the chances of that are 100% because that's what beta test means), you'll be at their mercy--and they won't be able to do anything besides put you back to stock if its a known issue with the custom ROM.

If you just want your software up to date, accept OTAs, then root (then don't accept OTAs anymore because more than just losing root can happen--wait for others to try it first ;)) The sticky above walks you through it. Personally, if/when JB comes out for our 535s, I'm wiping/flashing/starting over.

Perhaps you'll want to visit Computers & IT - Android Forums to get your computer fixed.

My only hang up is possibly loosing wi fi tether with JB..I use foxfi now..I hear only the Bluetooth part works for tethering internet..I want the same I have on ICS..all in all the phone is rock solid as is..I would like the original JB as well..but also like to root..but then I'm like a rom crack head..my friends are worriedso maybe I'll wait to..lol. To flash back, is it as simple as loading the backup through rom manager or is Linux involved like a droidx sbf? Are we sbf'ing anything anymore? I never really new what sbf meant..

No way would I give someone $40 to root vs phone and flash a ROM...it will take them less than 20 minutes to do...

As for it being real or a "knock off" its impossible to say without knowing the file they are flashing...there are certainly real JB ROMs for our phone...but that doesn't mean this place is using them...

My guess is they would install either CM10...or one of the stock JB leaks...

If you accept the update from VZW it will 99% likely break root...and actually if you unlock your boot loader (which you will to flash JB) then its possible accepting a VZW update will soft brick your phone...

The best part about being rooted is you will likely have access to the official update before the general public does...we have had three leaks of JB for the VZW S3 already...and the latest build was dated 11/15 i believe son its VERY recent...when the official update is approved, it will go out to soak testers first...the devs with get a file and have it rooted before the general public has the update pushed to them...

I would be worried that they will install a beta. I recommend just waiting it out.

A lot of us have been running leaked versions of JB for quite some time...its very solid

The Samsung update will be more stable than the custom ROM's, and probably more of what you are looking for, IMO.
The official update will only be less buggy because we are all doing Samsung's job by running their leaks...

Frankly the process of rooting/unlocking/flashing these phones is so easy...everyone should learn how
