I would think it will handle any SDHC card and even any SDXC card (but maybe not at UHS speeds).
They'll only advertise 64GB since that's likely all they tested/validated.

Has anybody gotten a 64GB card to work in the S3? I just got a SanDisk Class 10 64GB SDXC card and when I put it in the phone it says checking sd card and then I keep getting the "safe to remove sd card message". I can't get my phone to read it. Any steps I should take?

Yes format the card to FAT32 and it should work, assuming you (fdnj48) got your card from a reputable dealer. I only say that since there are a lot of fakes.
