Help The Big Freeze

Hey gang:

I'm noticing that a problem I'm having is being randomly mentioned by others across a number of threads. So, in the interest of discussing this all in one place, getting an idea of how many are experiencing this issue, and maybe even finding a fix, I thought I'd open it up as its own topic. To summarize: there are times the phone screen goes dark except for the notification light being on. No buttons then respond at all and there is no way to unlock it from this state other than by doing a battery pull. Sometimes when it then reboots it goes immediately into another freeze and locks out all functions again. When this happens, the only fix is to plug in the power cord and this seems to break the cycle. It might then be okay for a couple of days, but then something triggers the behavior again.

Some of those who use go sms pro as their messenger have observed that an incoming text may set all this in motion. I use this as well and have noticed when I come back to my phone sometimes that a notification of a missed text has indeed frozen things up. Other times I've thought that an app automatic update in the notification bar has been the culprit. In any case, it's all pretty annoying and even doing the dreaded factory reset has not resolved the issue. So far, it has not happened to me since the recent Verizon system update, but I'm not counting on anything just yet.

So, just very interested at this point in seeing how widespread this might be and maybe getting to a resolution.

Thanks for any sharing of ideas! (And, yay, this is my 200th post! Is there some sort of ceremony or something)?? :)

Thanks for starting this thread! This just started happening about 2 weeks ago-ish.

It happens when someone texts me and then right away sends another text. That in itself is not new, I have had this phone and GoSMS since June, but the freeze is.

I installed that skyvi app you mentioned in my thread, and got my sister to keep texting and it did not freeze once.

But I cannot handle all those SMS notifications, piling on top of each other and I really have no use for voice text at the moment.

I disabled the 'use Skyvi to handle SMS notifications' or whatever, and the doubled up notifications stopped, but the next time my sister sent multiple texts it froze up again.

I have had it happen several times over the past week and three things seem to cause it for me:
1. I have had it happen in my gosms text app
2. I have had it happen in conjunction with the facebook app force closing
3. I have had it happen with the Chive app force closing.

Each time it happens, nothing responds unless I power off and then on again.

I dont know if my issue would be considered similar to yours ,but my problem is with calls. Sometimes I try to make a call then it takes forever to place then occationally it freezes the phone and i have to do a restart to do it all over again. Other times as i close an app the home screen is half populated and takes a while to fully populate, sometimes this also requires a restart. I dont know whats going on, i cleared cache ,stopped apps ,all i could think of. Im seeing a similar occurence as the HTC Sensation and wondering if thats my curse :banghead:. Some insight would help me greatly. Thanks.
Sidebar: Hope this JB does better when Tmo sends it out.

At least it lets you power off and then on again! For the rest of us, all buttons are locked out and unresponsive when this happens leaving the only option as a battery pull. The only fix I have found (so far) is the aforementioned Skyvi app that handles the text messaging along with GoSms. True, the doulble notification isn't ideal, but it is merely a pop up underneath the primary GoSms one and can be closed easily after viewing the GoSms text. Plus, until someone comes up with an explanation as to why certain applications trigger this issue, I'll take the double notify over having to take my protective case along with the back of the phone off to do a battery pull every time this happens.

Never had this with my htc series of devices, so sure hope Samsung delivers a fix soon. Although it doesn't seem to be happening to multitudes of users, I think the problem has been revealed enough to warrant some attention. It wouldn't appear that a factory reset or replacement would be a sure thing.

It was suggested to uninstall goSMS and then reinstall. I hesitated because I knew I would lose all my customizations but it was so annoying I had no other option.

It didn't help.

BTW I get the force close on facebook too, not as often though...

Just an FYI, GO SMS has a backup settings feature. You can use this to create a backup which will be saved to the sd card. You can restore this backup to return all your settings and customizations.

For the record, when this happens still have the LCD blue light showing I have a text, so this tells me the phone is still running... it otherwise looks and acts dead.

I have a problem taking the back cover off (why is it so hard?) so I press the side power button and hold it until it vibrates briefly and then reboots itself.

Thank for the goSMS backup tip, I had no idea and I am going to do that ASAP!

I am hoping this gets fixed with JB, because I like to show off my phone and people are always asking me about it. It's so embarrassing when it doesn't work!!
