What is the point of "watering hole" threads?

When the water hole threads started, the thought was that the device sections needed to be devoted to the devices and not to the random "OMG did you hear_____" that had nothing to do with the device. This introduced the watering holes. As time went on the decision was made that these off topic threads were just that, off topic, and as a result they have since been in the lounge

If we already have specific forums for various devices, why create a thread dedicated to communicating with users of a specific device within the main forum?

Wanted to mention that you don't have to own said device to hang out in a particular Watering Hole. Example: I troll the Samsung Galaxy S3 Watering Hole even though I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Good times!:D;):cool::)

I am grateful for the plug. Conversely, I am offended by the sheer lack of h's in the words Whhhhhip and Whhhhheat! Correct this immegggdiately! Super LOL!

That makes a bit of sense, I've just always found their concept to be slightly redundant I suppose.

Watering hole threads were born out of a desire to keep the device areas more focused on the technical aspects of the device. Support, troubleshooting, modification, etc. We found a lot of threads in areas for popular devices would transform in to more of a social discussion and obscure the original information. When the first watering hole thread became a success in the lounge (It wasn't called a watering hole then -- I think it was for the first Galaxy Nexus) we decided it was a good idea to have them for other models as well.

The watering holes are kept in the lounge where it is a more social atmosphere, and anyone may participate whether you own the device or not, or just happen to be a thirsty wildebeest. ;)
