Hi there,
I googled around and couldn't find a thread that answered my questions, but if one exists I apologize and will happily consult that. Otherwise:
I have a Evo V 4G (Virgin Mobile) (Rooted) and am trying to gain S-Off. I have a few questions before attempting just so I fully understand what I'm doing.
1) On JuopunutBear's site, it says I need the Stock RUU. Found this thread but wanted to make sure the linked RUU is the one that I need.
2) I'm running HBOOT 1.57. Other than the wire-trick, are there any other special steps I have to take?
3) The site also says "Verify the MD5 checksum for your download." Not sure how to do that. Any tips?
4) Are there any common pitfalls I should look out for before getting started?

I think I have a basic understanding of how to do this, but if someone wouldn't mind giving me a few pointers on where I might get tripped up, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks very much to all. Love this site and all the great folks here.

Hi there,

I suggest you use Harmonia simply because you will most likely want to do the 'Turn Your Phone into an Evo 3D' and you need to use a non stock sense ROM to do that part.
2) I'm running HBOOT 1.57. Other than the wire-trick, are there any other special steps I have to take?
Not as far as I know, unless you're referring to something I'm not thinking about
3) The site also says "Verify the MD5 checksum for your download." Not sure how to do that. Any tips?
There are programs that can do this for you. Here is the first result I get when I google it: WinMD5 Free - Windows MD5 Utility Freeware
4) Are there any common pitfalls I should look out for before getting started?
My advice is to just read ALL the instructions a few times until you know exactly what you need to do almost by memory and make sure you follow them! You can watch a video to help with that too.

I think I have a basic understanding of how to do this, but if someone wouldn't mind giving me a few pointers on where I might get tripped up, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Getting the timing right for the wire trick is pretty much hit and miss and it's hard to say how much trouble you'll have, but just keep at it. Here is some troubleshooting that may answer any more questions you may have: Unlimited.IO

Good Luck!

Annnnd I blew it. After trying (and failing) the wire-trick 3 or 4 times, I started getting the message "Critical error.... can't find a seat!" Now the phone boots into Hboot but I can't get into recovery from there, nor can I get the recovery to work from the cmd in the controlbear folder (also returns the "Cannot find a seat!") was able to get it to run through the process once more with a battery pull, but I again failed the wire trick and am now stuck in Hboot.
Any advice?

Re run the program and try again. Took me like 20 tries. They are also super supportive on their irc

I think I managed to get the wire-trick right. However:
No I'm encountering the QHSUSB_DLOAD Driver error, which I can't seem to fix. ControlBear is still just repeating the "Hmmmm... still no device" dialogue, and advising me to check in device manager to ensure my adb and htc drivers are installed (which I believe they are).
In the event that my drivers aren't installed properly, how do I install .sys files? The HTC Drivers folder I downloaded has only those, no .exe files.
Thanks as always.

After about an hour of crying in the corner with a gun barrel in my mouth, I gave it another go and it seems to have worked. ControlBear ran through the whole process and I nailed the wire-trick. Afterward it displayed "too much beer on sdcard" and advised me to reformat, which I did. I'm on the home stretch! I'm now just on an Hboot screen with the only option being "RUU" which doesn't seem to do anything when pressed. Is there something I need to load onto my sdcard before proceeding?

Just a quick update... Time seems to be the key with all these problems. After waiting a few hours and a few battery pulls, I've gotten back to the HBoot regular menu. When I choose Bootloader, however, it quickly displays a dialogue of "Loading... No P86DIAG.zip!" as well as several more similar lines that disappear too quickly to read. Tried zipping the recovery.img and renaming the zip P86DIAG to no avail. I get the feeling I should download this from somewhere but not sure where. Ideas?
Thanks

Find 4ext recovery on google.

Power off phone.

Hold volume down plus power.

Select fastboot then plug phone into computer.

Rename recovery to recovery.img and place in fastboot folder.

Open cmd, cd to fastboot folder.

Type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img".

Power down phone.

Hold volume down plus power.

Select recovery.

Wipe and install rom.

Thanks for your reply. Followed your instructions, when I got to flashing the recovery it returned this:
c:\sdk-tools>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sending 'recovery' (2468 KB)... OKAY [ 0.686s]
writing 'recovery'... FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 0.689s

c:\sdk-tools>

It should also be noted that when I try to select fastboot it pulls up the same "P86DIAG.zip not found" thing.

Dload the 1.58 hboot from unlimited.io.

Rename to PG86IMG.zip and place on /sdcard.

Put sd card back in phone and hold volume plus power.

Press volume up to flash hboot.

Once complete, pull battery, delete PG86IMG.zip from sdcard.

Put battery and sd back in phone and hold volume down plus power and do the recovery instructions again.

Unbelievable. Can't thank you enough mrawesome22. Realized along the way I had been mistakenly using 'P86IMG' rather than 'PG86IMG,' so that was my own dumb fault. Followed your instructions and everything worked great. Should anyone else run into my dumb problems, follow those instructions. I used the TWRP recovery that I had been using initially, and Midnight Rom 1.3.2. Thanks again to all mrawesome22, youngSWi and ENVI3.
